A different take on a traditional Cyrano
by LeBret on 11/19/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New YorkFirst things first--this version cuts a lot of fan-favorite moments from the familiar Rostand play. Many are easily understood as bit of plot expediency. But there are other bits that you might miss, especially if you're a purist. If you really want to see Peter Dinklage deliver *this* favorite speech or his take on *that* favorite scene--you might be disappointed, 'cuz it's very possible that those favorite moments were cut. There are songs, all well-performed. Lyric-wise, they're OK at best, but the music throughout (in the actors' songs and otherwise) is exquisite: sonorous in tone and lending an exquisite melancholy to the whole piece. The choreography--meaning the images that characters form on stage; this is no dance revue--and the scenic design is really quite beautiful. This Cyrano production leans into the pervading tragedy at the heart of its story and dispenses with much of the flamboyant panache that other versions incorporate. The result is a Cyrano that's nothing somber and elegiac. That may not be the Cyrano you think you need, but it's a thought-provoking one you're not going to forget.
