About

Adapted by Erica Schmidt from Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand

Music by Aaron Dessner and Bryce Dessner of The National

Lyrics by Matt Berninger of The National and Carin Besser

Choreography by Jeff and Rick Kumperman

with Ritchie Coster, Josh A. Dawson, Peter Dinklage, Hallary Fisher, Christopher Gurr, Blake Jenner, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Nehal Joshi, Grace McLean, Erika Olson, Scott Stangland

A raw and transporting new version of the classic tale of unrequited love and ghostwritten letters, Cyrano tells the story of a proud man who, believing himself unlovable, agrees to woo the woman he loves for another. With a charged contemporary immediacy to the language, this adaptation by Erica Schmidt (All the Fine Boys) mines this enduring, human story for its deep vein of heartbroken yearning, with haunting and compelling music by members of the Grammy Award-winning band The National and the Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning actor Peter Dinklage in the title role. Cyrano is a production of The New Group's 2019/20 season. Learn more at TheNewGroup.org

A different take on a traditional Cyrano

by LeBret on 11/19/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

First things first--this version cuts a lot of fan-favorite moments from the familiar Rostand play. Many are easily understood as bit of plot expediency. But there are other bits that you might miss, especially if you're a purist. If you really want to see Peter Dinklage deliver *this* favorite speech or his take on *that* favorite scene--you might be disappointed, 'cuz it's very possible that those favorite moments were cut. There are songs, all well-performed. Lyric-wise, they're OK at best, but the music throughout (in the actors' songs and otherwise) is exquisite: sonorous in tone and lending an exquisite melancholy to the whole piece. The choreography--meaning the images that characters form on stage; this is no dance revue--and the scenic design is really quite beautiful. This Cyrano production leans into the pervading tragedy at the heart of its story and dispenses with much of the flamboyant panache that other versions incorporate. The result is a Cyrano that's nothing somber and elegiac. That may not be the Cyrano you think you need, but it's a thought-provoking one you're not going to forget.

    So Disappointed

by L. M. on 11/19/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

We had high hopes for Cyrano. We have seen Peter Dinklage in other excellent productions. Too bad, he tied himself to this play. There was no way he could carry the show with such a poor Roxanne. She basically ruined the musical with her high school performance. Kudos to all the other actors for fine performances around her.

    Sad

by EDS-NYC on 11/18/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

Book does not support the story....it does not shed any new light ... onsequently it is predictable in the first act and descends into chaos in act two.

    A Sigh

by Brian McGorty on 11/17/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

I went to the Daryl Roth Theater and saw Cyrano. There occurred a marriage of words and passion. Among the guests Don Quixote danced with Dulcinea. I was so moved that I was speechless. I simply sighed Bravissimo!

    Mixed bag

by KB on 11/15/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

While the staging, choreography and performances are great, the music left me flat. Nothing memorable, and quite repetitive. An interesting chord progression repeated over and over does NOT a song make. Oh, and the sound design was patchy- overbearingly loud microphones at times. Kudos to the cast, director and choreographer, though. And there were some wonderful moments in the script.

    Better than expected

by MikeD on 11/12/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

Was so glad to see this play. The story flowed, the voices were great. Many unique features. Great acting as one would expect form Peter Dinklage but the others were equally great! One or two reviews were less than stellar. I have no idea what they were watching....

    Five stars

by Robert on 11/12/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

Notwithstanding the inexplicable comments of some reviewers this was an outstanding production. Peter Dinklage was superb as were the rest of the cast - this was the strongest set of ensemble playing I have seen in years. The staging and choreography were extremely imaginative and on first hearing the score contained a couple of songs with the potential to become standards. Theatre at its best.

Dreadful. Wasted opportunity for Dinkledge who is a fine act

by toughcritic on 11/10/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

How do you take a literate and romantic play that is all about poetry and panache and turn it into a mundane mess? The music is without passion or finesse and the dialogue has been reduced to an embarrassment. The costumes evoke no time period and the acting of the other characters is uninspired to say the least. Recast and rework

    weak link

by cyrano lover on 11/10/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

My sister and I attended this play in late October. It has many fine aspects which we appreciated. The staging was inspired and gorgeous, the music fit the melancholy nature of this classic story. As expected, Peter Dinklage was excellent - fully inhabiting this character's emotional depth and wit. I thought the rest of the cast was up to his level except for one: Jasmine Cephas Jones. While she has an amazing voice, her Roxanne lacked depth. Her feelings were superficial and thus, neither my sister nor I experienced the heartbreak that is characteristic of this story. During the conclusion of the play, I felt that Ms. Jones was a student in an acting class. This was unfortunate for this play, which had so many positive things going for it!

    Peter can sing!

by Nadia on 11/9/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

Amazing cast and who knows Peter can sing, really well in fact! His skills as an actor glow in the dimly lit musical productions of this Cyrano revival. To be frank, I did not realized I was going to a musical as I expected to be attending a play. The mesmerizing cast keep you transfixed. Though the pace moved well the musical is too long a piece. Entertaining but can edit out 40 minutes of the total time and it would keep the thrilling beats. All and all worth your attention albeit a bit too long for my personal liking.

Great cast/ music needs more revision

by g.g. on 11/9/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

The most talented vocalists/actors could not move this music forward to propel the story. Mr. Dinklage is an infinitely heart wrenching actor with a beautiful speaking voice that he expands to the best of his ability to the music. He is surrounded by powerhouse vocalists who carry the more difficult musical numbers. It is the music itself that was the problem for me. It did not always work to tell the story, and it was monotonous. The choreography and staging of the battle scene was powerful, but there is too little choreography and interesting or relevant movement in most of the musical numbers. This is a great cast and could be a great show with some revisions.

This could be a generational thing ...

by Peter H on 11/5/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

I came to the theater expecting Peter Dinklage to be perfect in the title role, but I wasn't expecting it to be a musical! Dinklage's acting did not disappoint and the emotional currents of this strange story came through, but the range of his singing voice, a deep basso character voice, was minute and his voice did not have the variety of expression of a Tom Waits, say. The style of the songs was folk-emo, with an emphasis on guitar and strings. It was pretty, but to me, the lyrics were vague, and one battle song about "Southern Pride," struck me as actually confusing, since the battle was supposed to be occurring in 17th century France. But what do I know? I'm in my 60s, and younger generations may appreciate the atmospherics better than I did. The theater staff were friendly.
