About

Adapted by Erica Schmidt from Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand

Music by Aaron Dessner and Bryce Dessner of The National

Lyrics by Matt Berninger of The National and Carin Besser

Choreography by Jeff and Rick Kumperman

with Ritchie Coster, Josh A. Dawson, Peter Dinklage, Hallary Fisher, Christopher Gurr, Blake Jenner, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Nehal Joshi, Grace McLean, Erika Olson, Scott Stangland

A raw and transporting new version of the classic tale of unrequited love and ghostwritten letters, Cyrano tells the story of a proud man who, believing himself unlovable, agrees to woo the woman he loves for another. With a charged contemporary immediacy to the language, this adaptation by Erica Schmidt (All the Fine Boys) mines this enduring, human story for its deep vein of heartbroken yearning, with haunting and compelling music by members of the Grammy Award-winning band The National and the Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning actor Peter Dinklage in the title role. Cyrano is a production of The New Group's 2019/20 season. Learn more at TheNewGroup.org

    Perfection

by Patti C on 11/5/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

The passion each actor brought to his or her part was palpable. Time went way to fast. The ability of Peter Dinklage to emote was expected, but far exceeded our expectations. Thank you for a beautiful evening,

    Disappointing

by Svetlana on 11/5/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

A mix of very strong and weak actors. Roxana’s singing was subpar and out of tune. Was expecting better than that.

    Loved It!

by Barry S on 11/4/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

We had one free night in NYC and didn't think we had a chance to find seats for this play. Somehow, there were a few seats left, but we figured they'd be awful. Got them anyway, and they were amazing, as was the play. (No bad seats in the house really.) The play was hip, yet traditional (that's something in itself). Acting superb. Set minimalist, but miraculously changed throughout. You know the storyline. A must-see if you're in town. And since it's in Union Square, easy to access without the crowds. The theater is small, so it's easy to miss.

Fantastic Adaptation of the Play for a small Theatre

by Darren The Dude on 11/3/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

First of all, I am a Peter Dinklage fan, and I have to admit to buying a ticket because he is headlining it. But I'm pleased to say it was excellently produced, great dialogue, great supporting cast, everyone was spot on in their role. The theatre itself is pretty small and you'll notice when buying tickets that they are all labeled "orchestra". There are no bad seats in the house. The seats are rather small though and basic, no drink holders or over stuffed cushioning. Who cares? You see Dinklage sing, a first for me, and he does it very well. Various scenes are choreographed with a "slo-mo" mode for dramatic effect, and I liked it very much. All the actors sing, and well. Dinklage does not hog the spotlight, and even in the end seemed a bit hesitant to the standing ovation he would inevitably receive. Lots of fans out there who won't be disappointed.

    Cyra- NO

by Dirndyl66 on 11/1/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

Found music and lyrics to be trite - and oversimplification of storyline painful.

Excellent Music Speaks to the Heart

by S. B. on 10/31/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

Peter Dinklage is a remarkable singer, the lyrics are excellent, and of course carries the traditional wit associated with the Cyrano de Bergerac story

    Soulful

by Mirei on 10/30/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

This is a must. Each one of them is extremely incredible. Never a dull moment. Full of love, humor, letters, poetry, wit, and inner beauty. I love it.

Show was fantastic - chairs were uncomfortable

by Ben on 10/30/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

The show was spectacular. The music was wonderful, the acting superb. Literally the only thing that could have been better was that the chairs could have offered a little more support, particularly for the older patrons.

    Mediocre Cyrano

by S. L. on 10/30/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

Peter Dinklage is such a wonderful actor and a fine singer that he really raises the bar for the rest of the cast. Unfortunately, they do not rise to it and the constant music and lyrics fall way below expectations. The beautiful prose/poetry of Edmond Rostand looses so much being set to music. The theater is small and intimate and the playhouse staff are very helpful. I really wanted this play to be wonderful and am sad I can't say that.

Dinklage shines in this beautifully staged Cyrano

by MacNYC on 10/29/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

Peter Dinklage is a terrific actor and I liked his singing voice too. This is a beautifully staged and enjoyable Cyrano musical/play with music. Jasmine Cephas Jones is lovely and has a voice to match. The moody and novel choreography is by the Kuperman brothers. I'm keeping an eye on them; they're impressive. The seating in the venue is a bit tight. There is adequate legroom, but the seating is on banquet chairs with no arms, and large people will definitely spill into the next seat. At least there is a good rake, and you can see over the head of the person, unless he or she is really tall or has high hair.

    Beautifully Magical

    by Kim Gorby on 10/23/19

I have to say that Jasmine Cephas Jones was an awesome delight, her performance was powerful, earthy and extremely beautiful to behold! She put a spell on the audience with her enchanting singing voice and brilliant acting abilities. She bought grace to this glorious play and her scenes with Peter Dinklage were superb. I was surprised by the excellent music in the play full of heartfelt songs depicting every emotion. A play to stir the soul!

    Even better than expected

by G. P. on 10/22/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

I expected Peter Dinklage to have given a good performance. I did not expect him to have such a great stage presence and sense of timing. He was great, and the rest of the cast was easily up to his standards. It is definitely worth seeing. If you can get into the front row to the far left, you are in for a treat!

    Awesome!

by Jen on 10/22/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

We were fortunate to be in NYC this weekend and able to get the last two available seats to Sat matinee. The show was really fantastic and enhanced greatly by the sounds created by the Fab Four of Aaron and Bryce Dessner, Carin Besser, and Matt Berninger. Must see!

This is a wonderful piece of theatre. I loved the staging.

by Glory on 10/22/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

The use of slo-mo really works well in that small space. I loved all the falls (flour, rain, snow, leaves). And Peter Dinklage was superb. The seats were less than spectacular though...very cramped and uncomfortable.

    Fantastic

Powerful adaptation, great music, amazing cast, in a tiny intimate theater. Plus Tyrion Lannister!
