About

Adapted by Erica Schmidt from Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand

Music by Aaron Dessner and Bryce Dessner of The National

Lyrics by Matt Berninger of The National and Carin Besser

Choreography by Jeff and Rick Kumperman

with Ritchie Coster, Josh A. Dawson, Peter Dinklage, Hallary Fisher, Christopher Gurr, Blake Jenner, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Nehal Joshi, Grace McLean, Erika Olson, Scott Stangland

A raw and transporting new version of the classic tale of unrequited love and ghostwritten letters, Cyrano tells the story of a proud man who, believing himself unlovable, agrees to woo the woman he loves for another. With a charged contemporary immediacy to the language, this adaptation by Erica Schmidt (All the Fine Boys) mines this enduring, human story for its deep vein of heartbroken yearning, with haunting and compelling music by members of the Grammy Award-winning band The National and the Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning actor Peter Dinklage in the title role. Cyrano is a production of The New Group's 2019/20 season. Learn more at TheNewGroup.org

    Awesome

by Linda on 12/9/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

Peter Dinklage was such an incredible actor, I didn’t know he could sing! And his baritone voice was perfect as the long suffering Cyrano. I enjoyed the plays simplicity and the ensemble as the bakers in the background was playful and clever. The only thing I would improve are the chairs in the black box... everyone complained they were tiny, cramped and uncomfortable. It created a distraction from the fabulous , thoroughly enjoyable play.

    A play with music

by C. C. on 12/7/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

I would call this a play with music. It is not your usual musical, as it tries to keep to the classic storyline. I loved the male leads - Peter Dinklage as Cyrano and Blake Jenner as Christian, but I feel that Roxanne was miscast - she provided no emotion and does she sing well? it was difficult to tell at the performance I attended.

    Not worth the money

by Cyra-NO! on 12/4/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

I'll start with the positives: Venue is nice and intimate, can easily see the actors on stage up close from any seat. Decent amount of legroom. Set was nice with some interesting artistic aspects. Dinklage can act! He is a talented actor, no doubt. Negatives: The script was poor. The musical adaptation was little more than taking the prose and "singing" it. Roxanne's character was poorly cast. She has musical talent but her style was not suited to the character. Her acting was not compelling for the role. Nothing in the performance was outstanding. Unable to evoke relatable emotion from the audience. Not worth the ticket price.

    Once in a lifetime

by Bill E Bob on 12/4/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

Short trip to NYC and found that Peter Dinklage was performing Cyrano off Broadway. Had to get tickets and was not disappointed. The play was funny and emotional. Loved the simplicity of the sets and the vision of the director. And loved Peter Dinklage in this role. Bravo.

    Unexpected and thoughtful details

by Rosie on 12/3/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

Really enjoyed the show! The musical elements were great and certain set elements were charming. Small theater so not a bad seat in the house.

An interestingly told version of the Cyrano tale with a small ensemble of great actors.

    Great actors, mediocre play

by SavvyFairre on 11/29/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

Peter Dinklage and Jasmine Cepheus Jones were superb on stage, as well as the rest of the cast. However, the material was not as engaging as I had hoped. The music was pleasant enough, and the voices were good, but no songs grabbed you and held on...with the possible exception of the soldiers song. Worth seeing because of Dinklage and Jones.

    Loved Cyrano!

by Carol on 11/27/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

Peter Dinklage is a wonderful actor! He is the reason I picked Cyrano as a birthday gift to my husband. We both really enjoyed the performance by the whole cast, but especially Peter Dinklage! and we were also very impressed with his singing! The small theater was nice to be so close to the stage. We were center stage, second row. The play was very moving. Well worth the money and we would highly recommend seeing Cyrano!

    Beautiful Lighting, Mediocre Music

by Ashley LM on 11/27/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

It looked a treat, and the actors tried their best. It felt like a musical that was written by people who don't care for musicals and would rather not subject the audience to anything catchy or interesting. The director valiantly tries their best, using interesting set pieces, gorgeous lighting, unusual (distracting) background choreography ... I mean, I was watching background characters baking rather than watching Peter Dinklage, at one point. The lyrics are banal, especially disappointing in a show about writing (at one point Cyrano fails to use the subjunctive case), and the music aggressively dull. I left at intermission.

Peter Dinklage is irresistible as Cyrano

by Dr. Miracle on 11/26/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

Do not, under any circumstances, miss the opportunity to see Peter Dinklage as Cyrano. (Its run has been extended.) He is charming, witty, and romantic in the role, and happens to sing great too.

    Amazing!

by Jenn on 11/25/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

Small intimate theater. Loved the minimal scenery and snow/rain falling down to indicate change in season and passage of time. The best part however was Peter Dinklage. What a presence! I could watch this performance every night. He did not break character for a second, even when in the wings or during bows - such a powerful actor with so much passion behind every line. 5 stars for sure!

    Horrible Seats, Great Show Otherwise

by Kelly D. on 11/22/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

This show was really wonderful. But the Daryl Roth Theatre had horrible seats, especially considering the cost of the ticket. I would think twice before seeing a show at this venue since the seats were so inaccessible, hard, and too close to neighboring seats.

    Heart-wrenching

by Eve on 11/20/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

Peter Dinklage’s portrayal of Cyrano is powerful and enthralling! His passion and love on one hand, and his frustration and agony on the other, were strings he masterfully strummed throughout the play to create a heart-wrenching concerto! Bravo!!!
