The Cracker show at the Hard Rock Cafe, at Four Winds Casino was a stellar event. Playing for close to 2 hours the band treated their loyal fans to a rocking show filled with fan favorite songs. These guys are a must-see live act. One of the greatest American bands still killing it.
I didn't know too much about Cracker before the show, but they put on a great show. Very talented performers and musicians. The opening band was awesome too! Paul Erdman has an amazing band, and his original songs got the crowd singing along. I didn't know we had this kind of local talent!
Excellent show, the opening band did a great job. When Cracker took the stage it was on. Haven't lost their touch. Immortal!
always a great show from Cracker. The Hard Rock at Four Winds is a great room to see a show, not crouded, easy to get a drink and lots of nice people.
Cracker is a must see even if you are not a big fan. Cafe sucks not enough seating.
Great show as always. Cracker always puts on a strong show. This time was no exception.
Enjoyed Camper Van, but it was overextended and they didn't play "Where the Hell Is Bill" or "Club Med Sucks". Cracker rocked better than ever! Left us wanting much more...like "Big Dipper" The music was professional, but the lighting at this show was middle school talent show caliber and it diminished the performance.
The incredible display of musicianship and outrageous talent, paired with the superb sounding and well designed Burnsville PAC, was a bit like pairing a complex Merlot with the delicate gentleness of grilled lake trout. Each on their own were more than one could ask for, but didn't go together well. The event was quite enjoyable when all was said and done.
The Fineline was highly recommended and it did not dissapoint. This is an excellent venue, you can get close to the artist with incredible sound and the service staff were very accomodating. Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven did not dissapoint, excellent music all around. This is a second time I have seen Cracker this year and I will go again the next chance I get. This band has lost nothing with age.
Camper was trippy but tight, very well-rehearsed with complex guitar fiddle interplay and those eastern sounding alternate scale things they've always done so well. I hadn't seen them live for about 25 years (they were opening for REM on the Life's Rich Pageant tour, I think), so it took a second to get my mind around the age of the band members (the lead singer of the superb openers looked, in contrast, like he was about 18, and I'm almost as old as Lowery), but they opened the show with two of the all-time greats from "Key Lime Pie" and I was already blissfully swept away. Alas, no "When I Win the Lottery", but they did the obligatory "Take the Skinheads Bowling". After opening with a couple of rockers (including "100 Flower Power Maximum" - an unexpected treat), Cracker (which looked like it had the same drummer from Camper) basically split their set into two sections; the first was a bunch of their country oriented throwaway joke songs written by the guitarist Johnny Hickman (stuff like "Mr. Wrong" - fun on the albums where you can FF/skip after you've heard them a couple of times), and they almost lost me. They wrapped up the country stuff the classic and crowd favorite "Eurotrash Girl", then were back to being Cracker proper for another 6-7 terrrific Lowery written tunes, a couple from their last album (e.g. "Yalla Yalla"). No "Take Me Down to the Infirmary" or "I'm a Little Rocket Ship", but they did "Don't Fuck Me Up (with Peace and Love)". The encore didn't quite work with Camper coming back up first. They were great, but the transition back from Cracker was abrupt (maybe the sets would have seemed this way too, but there was a long break between the Camper set and the Cracker set). For the Cracker encore, they picked a great song, "Loser", but it seemed like an odd and slow choice for an encore. A great show by Lowery & Co.
Great show - sound was good, the band was having a blast up there and made for a real fun time. Would have liked some flexibility with the set list - Duty Free, Golden Age. I know... so much to choose from, but those are masterpieces! Not as familiar with CVB, but loved the mix between the 2 bands, music and crews. Oh, Man, the Fine Line is really a dump ;o( The smell in the men's room reminded me of the Long Bar in Tijuana.
Great night of varied music from American Scarecrows to Camper van Beethoven through Cracker! It was great to hear the CVB songs that I thought I would never hear live and Cracker rocked the house! They easily could have played 30 completely different tunes and it would have been just as rocking!
Dave Lowry and Johnny Hickman looked and sounded as good as ever
Great show!!! Can't wait until they come back to St. Louis!
When Camper Van Beethoven opens for Cracker, it makes for a fantastic concert. Splitting his time almost evenly between the two bands, David Lowery doesn't really cater to an audience as much as he rolls over them. Camper Van Beethoven, mostly known for a bouncy, lighter sound than Cracker, presented many songs with a darker current, alternating those tunes with favorites such as Club Med Sucks and All Her Favorite Fruit. That set ended with Take The Skinheads bowling, and Pictures Of Matchstick Men. Highlights included Lowery's comment, "We're a jam band. No, really we are" and four of the five members of CVB stepping up to microphones for a chorus of "Make me a sandwich" during a song about a drug trip soured by a large bird which morphed into a trip about traveling to Sweden, vipers, and "anti-venom". Beetle Bob was present, dancing right in front of the stage, and all bands were taped for unofficial (ie, no money involved) bootleg release. (Previous Cracker shows in STL have been taped, so I presume that all parties involved had permission.) Cracker took the stage after a short intermission which allowed Lowery to change his red shirt, and ran through hits such as "Get Off This," and "Low", rarities such as "Redneck Mother", favorites like "Big Dipper", and newer material such as "Hand Me My Inhaler" and "Tune In Turn On Drop Out". Cracker's songs are always tinged with a nod to country, and Johnny Hickman showed why he's one of rock's most under-appreciated guitarists. As a four-man band (on this particular night), Cracker delivers solid rock and roll, but with some of the most devious, or make that mischievous, lyrics you'll ever hear. It's good to see many younger people at this show, because songs like "Friends" and "Eurotrash Girl" are a much needed injection of humor these days. I've brought four different friends to see Cracker over the years, and all of them have enjoyed the experience. After twenty years, this is one band that still delivers far more than its ticket price. PS: For David and Johnny: I'm the guy who always yells, "Thank you" between songs, instead of the usual offerings. And I always mean it.
From the highly energetic opening act, Poison Control Center, to the encore I was entertained. This was my first time to attend a concert at the Pageant, but definitely not my last. We stayed next door at the Moonrise so everyone in my group was able to really let their hair down. Subsequently we spent way more on booze than we intended, but had an awesome time. While going in I only had a passing familiarity with some Camper Van Beethovan songs, I was totally hooked by their jam band vibe. Their fiddler is awesome and I loved how some of the instrumentals seemed to morph from a latin tune into something Bolshevikesque. Seeing Cracker's performance-Johnny Hickman in particular has us pumped up with anticipation for three upcoming "Three Amigos" gigs in Colorado next month. Can't wait!
Went to see CVB, which was amazing, and left a Cracker fan!
I traveled from Arkansas to Vegas to see my beloved Cracker! The Body English venue at the Hard Rock was awesome.... I have seen Cracker many times and I am never disappointed... They played almost two hours and sounded incredible...!!!!
Great show as always! Cracker and CVB songs played were all classics that will be echoeing throughout the rafters of the Bluebird for quite some time!
