  • CJO on fire.. singers, not so much.

    by jazzgirl5 on 4/17/12Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

The Columbus Jazz Orchestra was UNBELIEVABLY great! I mean they were AMAZING! However, the whole second half of the show had people singing over the songs. This completely took away from the orchestra.. and the singers were not that great. (Not good enough to be singing with this orchestra anyway). There were times where my friend and I just closed our eyes and tried to listen to the orchestra but it was hard. I'd think twice about paying for tickets to see the CJO if there were singers involved. This is even coming from a soul singer.. One or two songs with singing maybe, but no more.

  • Incredibly entertaining!

My friend and I had a great time! Byron Stripling painted a picture of what it was like at the cotton club in Harlem. His charisma, charm, leadership, and showmanship as director and trumpet player led the way for the guest artists and band to seal the experience. I highly recommended this show to my other friends via Facebook as soon as the show was over!

  • A Night at the Cotton Club

The CJO was terrific as usual. The performing Artists were unforgetable.... and Byron Stripling, Bobby Floyd and the entire orchestra kept us tapping and applauding.

  • Excellent as always

Tornado warning did not keep most of audience away. Every category - band music, tap-dancing, vocals - was spot-on perfect.

The best show this year by far. Byron is in his element. Cab Calloway and Louis Armstrong all rolled into one.

It was a great evening and I loved the tap dancing. We don't see enough of it.

  • CJO Never fails to amaze me

    by Minime47 on 3/19/12Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Not only is their music incredible but Byron always seems to through in some humor. The two guest musicians/performers were outstanding as well. Overall, it was the perfect length and variety of Cotton Club songs.

  • Cotton Club was amazing

Could not have been happier unless we could have been up dancing with the stars. We have not been more entertained in years. The Columbus Jazz Orchestra obviously love their job.

  • Columbus Jazz Orchestra: Night at the Cotton Club

    by Barbiey2011 on 3/18/12Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

I thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Byron Stripling is so amazing, he is so talented and has such charisma. Ted Louis Levy was sensational, as was Brenda Braxton.

  • Fabulous

  • Amazing story told in an amazing way!

by SmartGirlOhio on 3/5/12Lincoln Theatre - COLUMBUSRating: 5 out of 5

Wycliffe Gordon did a fantastic job! Through the coordination of music, dance, visual art and spoken word, Gordon told the story of the Blackberry Patch, a historic Columbus neighborhood. Involving students from area schools and artists and musicians from the community made this a living history project.

  • Music was superb!

by JazzLoverFromColumbus on 3/5/12Lincoln Theatre - COLUMBUSRating: 4 out of 5

Mixed feelings from the event. The band and the music were fantastic, the dancers were exptremely mediocre - amateur performance at best. Granted, the dancers were high school students and the whole community spirit was well conveyed - but still, better prepared and choreographed performance wouldn't hurt. The theatre itself is a treat. Beautifully decorated - Egyptial theme, as it turned out - and fully renovated. Historical place too - it opened in 1929 and was an important part of the Blackberry Patch and Poindexter Village neighborhood. Overall I would recommend the event and the theatre.

  • Beyond Blackberry Patch

by Mayorarnett on 3/4/12Lincoln Theatre - COLUMBUSRating: 3 out of 5

The first half was slow, to slow. The second half was much more upbeat and enjoyable. Unfortunately, Wycliffe Gordon talked way too much; the show could have had forty-five minutes trimmed. Less talk and more music.

The show was amazing. We had a fantastic time. Especially for our first trip to the ballet.

  • Jazz Moves was Great

by Avaizzy on 2/15/12Capitol Theatre - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

As almost every experience with Ballet Met it was a wonderful night. The combination of live music on stage and dancing was terrific, although on the two numbers that just involved music I found myself wishing to see some dancing. The Riffe Center venue puts the audience right on top of the action. Although I liked every minute of the performance I thought the beginning numbers were a bit disjointed at times. I liked the photos and films of old Columbus but wasn't sure how they fit, especially the long sequence about the flood of 1913. Okay, it was a major flood, but what was the point. However, the closing numbers, starting with the revival piece were spectacular-the music, the images of civil rights and student anti war protests and the disco stuff, and especially the dancing were superlative.
