  • Some Forgot this was a Sinatra tribute

by Pdgbdr on 2/11/15Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 2 out of 5

The first half of the show, featuring Dwight Lennox and Phil Clark with the CJO was top notch. Both vocalists evoked Sinatra without trying to imitate him and their little flourishes were in the flavor of the songs and arrangements as recorded by Frank. The CJO used the same (or close to the same) landmark arrangements of Nelson Riddle and the Count Basie Orchestra on the original recordings and their execution was dynamic and spot on. The CJO is a polished outfit, versatile and engaging. Bobby Floyd virtually channeled Count Basie and he was delightful. Dee Daniels, on the other hand, is doubtless a talented singer. And if this is billed as a Dee Daniels concert, I would have positive things to say about her. But it was billed as a Sinatra show, and she frankly exhibited poor taste throughout. She seems to be one of those singers that equate singing with volume and an overdose of notes. Her extended gospel-blues riffs were totally out of place. And the finale, all 3 singers on New York New York, was a fiasco. Their harmonies were not harmonious, and their respective 4 bar solos were totally incongruous due to their very different styles. I would go see Dwight and Phil do this show alone.

  • Frank Sinatra tribute was missing Frank Sinatra!

    by Anne2215 on 2/11/15Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 2 out of 5

Hugly disappointed in the lack of Frank Sinatra. People went because they love his music, but hardly any hits were played. I was so excited before the concert and left incredibly uninspired.

  • Sinatra show blew the roof off of the Southern!

by Finalebuff on 2/11/15Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

I had the pleasure of treating my 83-year-old Mother to this concert, as she loves Swing and Sinatra, so it was a perfect match. The CJO has never sounded better, and the guest artists each brought their own elegant tribute to the great Frank Sinatra's music. Dwight Lenox had a smooth and velvety voice with a side of power that I've come to expect from his performances, and Phil Clark evoked the sound of Frank with each turn of his melodic phrases. The orchestra was magnificent, as usual, but seemed to have a bit of an extra spark for this performance - truly hitting all the high notes and sending out a performance that would rival any big band in any city. When Dee Daniels emerged for the 2nd half, she didn't take long to establish herself as being well in-command on the stage. Her four-octave vocal range was gracefully displayed, and the interplay with Bobby Floyd on America the Beautiful was a performance I will never forget. My only regret is that there will not be a recording to remember this performance - truly one of the best live concerts I can ever recall attending.

  • may this show be rememered 100 years

by clevelandhopeful on 2/11/15Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

This was one of the best shows we have seen in a long time. The orchestra as usual outstanding. Dwight and Phil great. Dee Daniels was wonderful. Her rendition of America was the highlight of the show and could have listened to it all night long. Bobby Floyd what can you say, he is one with the organ.

  • 1/2 a Good Show

by Luvdayanks on 2/11/15Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 3 out of 5

Enjoyed the first of the show. Jazz orchestra was great. Dwight and Phil both very good. After intermission it went down hill fast. Special Guest Dee Daniels was not really a Sinatra tribute, more like a Whitney Houston. She did a version of America the Beautiful that I though would never end.

Outstanding!! ALL THE WAY! :-) Great choice to have all three vocalists! We thoroughly enjoyed it!

  • Great show and great venue

by Anonymous on 2/10/15Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

This was our first visit to the Southern Theatre and it was great. The theatre has so much history. The people were so helpful (even took our picture for us!). The show was wonderful. The jazz orchestra was fantastic.

  • Not what I wanted to see!!!

    by DML799 on 2/9/15Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 3 out of 5

I liked Dwight Lenox & would probably go see him again. I felt he was more in keeping with the period and music of Frank Sinatra. I did not care for Phil Clark, thought he looked like he was drunk. I did not like Dee Daniels at all. I felt she was more about herself than the person she was to be honoring. I loved the band!!!

CJO is always exhilarating. The solo instruments add so much every time. Byron is a "Leader" and is the magnet of up and coming talent. We have never been disappointed. We wish it were possible to attend every event with these performers. Dwight is so smooth Dee was over the top in her presence and presentation. Bobby Floyd was wild on the organ along with Bob on the drums. What FUN! Phil was, as always, fabulous. His clarity, his relaxed style and depth has you on the stage with him. Except for the concert coming to a close the singing trio was a highlight and delightful to hear. The Southern Theater is so beautiful and certainly added to the wonderful atmosphere and evening of style.

The Sinatra event was wonderful. We especially liked the first half when many of "his" songs were song. While Dee Daniels is so very talented, she did kind of detracted from the "Sinatra" theme. I did not like her rendition of America the Beautiful and it did not belong in the set. The orchestra was marvelous, as usual

  • Home for the Holidays

    by BoBo41 on 12/10/14Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

What can I say? It was truly amazing. I loved Curtis Sigers.. I couldn't get over his versatility- handling any type of songs; his musicality in playing the saxophone and his overall stage presence. He came off as likeable, funny and I sensed he loved being there and performing. The orchestra and Byron, as always, fabulous. Actually, I just discovered the Columbus Jazz Arts Group last year. Someone I know had season tickets and was not able to go, so I was given the ticket. I went, not knowing what to expect as I'm not normally a "jazz" fan. But for some reason I was transported into another world, I loved every minute of the performance. (It was the one where the girl from Broadway sang.) . I literally floated all the way back to Lancaster, Ohio and am now addicted. It's a joy to be able to sit back and relax and hear real talent. What passes for entertainment in today's world is vulgar and amateurish. The Columbus Jazz Arts Group brings to the public something that is sorely needed in today's world: tasteful, highly professional and accomplished performers.

  • Perfection

    by Anele1 on 12/8/14Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

They say San Francisco has great jazz? Pssht...CJO can hang with any of them. This is our 2nd Christmas show and it was a wonderful night. Classic, old school jazz versions of your favorite Christmas carols. Throw in a special guest, this year being Curtis Stigers, and you've basically got two concerts. The Southern is a great, intimate theater to feel like it's just you and your new friends enjoying the most talented musicians Columbus has to offer. Don't miss it!

  • CJO the Bomb:Stigers, not so much

by KateOne on 12/6/14Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 3 out of 5

As usual, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra was amazing. They are not only talented, but so engaged during their performances, you can feel the personalities of the individuals to are part of this group. Curt Stigers' appearance was rather brief, but that was okay. He came across as arrogant and as though he wasn't "buying into" the fact that this was a Holiday Performance. Yes, he sang some holiday songs, and his voice is absolutely amazing - his stage presence, however, was a complete turn-off.

  • Fantastic performances, spectacular quality

by cMayzing on 10/28/14Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

The group played very well together and individual performances showed their love for their music and quality of their skills. miss Smith's vocals were a pleasure to the ear. The Southern Theater is a great venue for musical groups. We had a fabulous evening.

  • Columbus Jazz Orchestra is very talented!

by Anonymous on 10/28/14Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Wonderful and fun concert. I had never before heard of Carly Thomas Smith, and she is a great vocalist, fun and very professional. The music selected from the movies was a nice mix, allowing for Carly and many of the CJO musicians to show off their many talents. And, they have some amazing talent, especially Byron Stripling and Bobby Floyd!

  • CJO Knockout

by TipTom on 10/27/14Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

This remarkable group of musicians executed a flawless program of standards that have appeared on movie soundtracks. Highlights included the peerless stylings of Bobby Floyd on piano and organ and the vocals of Carly Thomas Smith.

  • Rockin' at the Lincoln

by MowtownFan on 10/3/14Lincoln Theatre - COLUMBUSRating: 5 out of 5

Since I single-handedly made Mowtown the success it is today (quote from a friend when she saw my record collection), it was only fitting that I attend this CJO concert featuring Mary Wilson of the Supremes. What a night! Loved everything about it and the Lincoln Theatre was a beautiful venue to showcase all that talent!

  • Mowtown Medley

by CaandBa on 9/24/14Lincoln Theatre - COLUMBUSRating: 5 out of 5

Absolutely fantastic. Mary Wilson was of course great, but the Columbus Jazz Orchestra was superb. It was our fist time hearing the orchestra, and now we will come to more orchestra events! Thanks so much.

  • Columbus Jazz Orchestra does NOT disappoint!

by CbusAJA on 9/23/14Lincoln Theatre - COLUMBUSRating: 5 out of 5

I'm sorry for everyone who missed the Columbus Jazz Orchestra's Motown Medley at the Lincoln Theater. From the tribute to Michael Jackson to Little Stevie Wonder to Little Richard, Byron and the boys demonstrate yet again the talent that we have in our midst. Featured guest for Motown Medley was Mary Wilson. Her performance was outstanding. I was captivated by her from the moment she walked on stage. What a performer. She put her heart and soul into every note she sang. Wilson's version of Joni Mitchell's classic "Both Sides Now" had me in tears. There is never enough enthusiastic applause or enough standing ovations to express my gratitude to the CJO and Mary Wilson for this tremendous performance.

  • CJO with Mary Wilson was outstanding!
