  • Don't Listen To This! was so worth listening to!!

by JazzyMamma on 9/26/11Lincoln Theatre - COLUMBUSRating: 5 out of 5

I am not sure what I was expecting, but this concert was beyond my wildest expectations. All of the musicians were highly talented and energetic! Byron Stripling provided the history behind each of the songs, which made the evening even more entertaining and informative as well! I am planning on purchasing tickets for the remaining concerts in this series! Bravo! The Lincoln Theatre was quite welcoming!

Not at all what we were expecting. I enjoyed the format. Not only did you listen to some great songs but you laughed and learned as well.

by SamSuz on 9/25/11Lincoln Theatre - COLUMBUSRating: 5 out of 5

EXCELLENT FROM BEGINNING TO END. THE MUSICIANS WERE TIGHT, THE SOUND WAS INCREDIBLE AND THE HISTORY BEHIND THE SONGS WAS WELL WORTH LEARNING. ALL IN ALL, LOVED EVERY NOTE. FIRST TIME IN LINCOLN THEATRE--ACOUSTICS, WOW! THE REMODEL WAS WELL DONE AND I THINK VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.

  • Amazing!

by Gablefan on 5/23/11Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

As usual, the CJO delivered an amazing evening. I loved the mix of older and newer songs, and Bobby Floyd was his usual incredible self. I recommend pretty much any CJO concert to anyone who enjoys hearing excellent musicians do their thing.

I cannot imagine how the performers could have been any better. Hats off, too, to the CJO audience who requested such a nice variety of music to be played.

  • 11 Freakin' good musicians & "Birth of the Cool"

by bcaltneu on 5/2/11Lincoln Theatre - COLUMBUSRating: 5 out of 5

A well-conceived visit to American jazz recordings 60 years or so ago. Act I presented the run-up to the moment jazz changed in the late '40s and ear'y '50s. Derek DiCenzo and Nate Anders contributed spirited guitar and vibes respectively to the first hour. Act II recreated the reocrdings of Miles Davis and his incredible collaborators. Mark Flugge recruited, shaped and directed some of Columbus' best -- Jim Powell, Michael Cox, Chris Berg, Bob Breithaupt, Vaughn Weister and Jay Miglia and added the smooth french horn of Natalie Adams and the steady tuba of Kie Watkins to play most of the tunes from the 1957 album. Freakin' good muscians playing incredibly complicated compositions flawlessly. The production of the past reminded me of the present -- and the compositions of Darcy James Argue's "Secret Society."

  • First steps of Cool

by LeahGrrl on 5/2/11Lincoln Theatre - COLUMBUSRating: 4 out of 5

What great musicians! We enjoyed the artistry and talent of the (mostly) men assembled on stage to provide a historical look at Miles Davis's The Birth of the Cool album. The structure of the evening--looking at bop, hard bop in the first half and then the album in the second--was a nice pre/post design (and could be augmented with more experimental jazz of the 50s and 60s as a final flourish, if the JAG wishes to make it bigger). The narration between the compositions got a little tedious; although I like the fact that CCAD was involved, I thought that a dramatic rendering of the narration would have helped the transitions more than they were helped by CCAD's president reading from paper documents. Similarly, the show could be catapulted into five stars if the producers had taken "multimedia" more seriously than scans from a coffee table book. How cool would it have been to have seen live video of some of "the times"?! Still, we came for the music--which was superb--and not these extras, so I will say I am very pleased with the evening and very glad I bought tickets.

  • "Marva"lous

by syncophant on 4/21/11Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

As usual, we enjoyed the performance tremendously, especially Marva, the featured perfomer, Bobby Floyd, and the "happy" saxaphonist. Every member was topnotch.

Spectacular evening - not to be missed. The orchestra and guest performer outdid themselves.

  • What a Night!

by skippybelmont on 4/18/11Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Marva Hicks was stunning vocally and visually. She layered another sound into the Jazz Orchestra mix. The orchestra continues to surpass itself. Bobby Floyd, the pianist and organist, and the other soloists shook the Southern. The audience was so psyched. Byron Stipling is a great leader and cheerleader. Bravo, Cbus Jazz Orchestra.

My feet are still moving. Just a great evening, they are the best! Columbus we are so lucky to have this talent available to us. Bobby Floyd is worth the the price of a ticket alone.

  • by cpteacher on 2/22/11Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Superb!! The singer was fantastic, but nothing was written about her in the program. I would like to hear more of Byron singing and on the trumpet.

  • The Joint Was Jumpin'

by doggied on 2/22/11Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

First half featured the CJO with Byron Stripling singing as well as playing; Bobby Floyd doing his flawless thing on the keyboard and the introduction of a Broadway female singer, Bethany Moore. She had pipes that were made for Broadway: strong, vibrant and standing at 5'11", a former dancer, she was also stunning to look at! After intermission, we were treated to the guest pianist, Bill Charlap, a virtuoso, a gifted artist who was master of his domain. What a treat to listen and watch him play with the band as well as solo. A full evening of great fun and first class entertainment.
