Cirque du Soleil: OVO on Tour

Talk about creating a buzz. Touring circus company Cirque du Soleil's OVO offers a nonstop, life-affirming, two-hour tribute to the infinitely diverse world of insects. This sensual, acrobatically dazzling show premiered in 2009 as the Montreal-based circus company's 25th production since 1984. The cast for its premiere included 54 performing artists from 16 different countries. Created and directed by Deborah Colker, OVO (Portuguese for "egg") contemplates insects in all their beauty, action and curiosity. Brazilian composer Berna Ceppas transforms their flight, leaps, creeping and crawling into a samba-influenced choreographic spectacle augmented by the constant flutter and hum of real insect sounds.

With well over a thousand performances to date, OVO long ago took flight as one of the Cirque's most popular and rewarding extravaganzas. As Albany, New York's Times Union said of OVO in 2020, "In our digital age, it's reassuring to remember that non-simulated, filter-free entertainment still has the power to dazzle and transport us."

What is Cirque du Soleil: OVO?

Upon its Montreal debut in 2009, OVO became Cirque du Soleil's most audacious and virtuosic new-circus show to date. A trio of principal characters — Master Flipo, Foreigner and Ladybug — keeps this arena spectacular in constant motion, as awestruck insects become intensely interested in a mysterious egg's sudden appearance. OVO teems with life, and Cirque du Soleil's talented cast mirrors the insect world's natural abilities to fly, balance and leap with a lifetime of practice and precision.

During one of the company's largest flying acts, 10 scarab beetles on three platforms toss a single beetle back and forth. A colorfully costumed dragonfly flits about, red ants juggle chunks of kiwi and corncobs with their feet, and butterflies cling gracefully to one another as they float through the air. For OVO's grand finale, the large span used for brilliant lighting effects transforms into a two-story climbing wall onto which trampoline-powered crickets are hurled as though onto a vertical stage. Cockroaches, grasshoppers and other insects serve as supporting characters throughout the evening's dozen acrobatic tours de force.

    I loved it!

by YT on 9/14/22Ball Arena - Denver

What a wonderful show. We had a great time. It’s exciting, funny, cute, mesmerizing, all in one. The acrobats are out of this world, and the theme was perfect. I just wish the crew at Ball Arena thought about the audience in sections 200 when they use those annoying orange lights with multiple dots. They hurt your eyes. Other than that, it was a perfect show.

    What a show!

by Luna on 9/14/22Ball Arena - Denver

The Cirque team did not disappoint! The insect theme was very fun & the costumes were amazing. I particulary loved the rock wall/trampoline part of the show. It was like watching spiders jumping all over (in a good way). So much talent in that group. I also liked that it lasted the full 2 hours. I didn't want it to end!

The vibrant colors, the stunts, the skits, the costumes & the story line, all were just spectacular. My 4 year old twin granddaughters loved the show, 2nd one I’ve taken them to, 5th one for my daughter & I, we all just love the shows. Have made it a traditional event for a Girls outing.

    A Night to Remember

by Neo Le on 9/14/22Ball Arena - Denver

That was my first time going to a Cirque De Soliel show and it was fantastic. All six acrobatic acts were unbelievably amazing, especially the one who two acrobat artists held on to each other to 2 sides of a rope while hanging and flying in the air, literally. I have a feeling that this won't be my last time to Cirque De Soliel.

    Disappointed

by Shalimar on 9/14/22Ball Arena - Denver

Under 2 hr show for $99 per ticket did not feel like a good value & I won’t be going to Cirque again in the near future. The acts were good but it seemed like fewer acts than in the past shows. Parking was overpriced at $25 and all concessions were so expensive. My 9 year old was bored after the first hour. I appreciate the efforts of all the performers, but I didn’t feel awed as I have in the past.

    I’ve seen better Cirque shows

by Sasha on 9/14/22Ball Arena - Denver

The Cirque du Soleil overall is amazing. I have seen several shows but I have to say this was one of the weakest and slowest. All the athletics, juggling and acrobatics in the show were incredible as always. Deep respect for the athletes. Costumes were best as well. But the leads and the storyline were very slow and there were too many silly theatrical scenes. Some things were hard to see because it was so darkly lit and the scenery was all camouflage. I think there should’ve been a little bit more juggling or acrobatics.

    Disappointed

by Alicat on 9/14/22Ball Arena - Denver

I have been seeing Cirque du Soleil since I was a little girl and I must say this was terrible. There was just so much filler and untalented people. The acrobatics we're amazing as always but I felt like most of the show was just the lady bug running around. She could have at least sang. She had zero talent. It wasn't just her either there were a lot of people on stage that didn't do anything to wow us. Hopefully the can bring it back to the spectacular side it used to be at one time.

    Great show, poor ambiance

by Love the Cirque on 9/14/22Ball Arena - Denver

One of the best Cirque show I have seen over the years and I have seen a lot. I really liked the rock wall sequence. Nevertheless, the show was diminished by the extremely high cost of ticketmaster. The cost was almost double. One half to Cirque, one half to Ticketmaster. Then, half the people were not in their seats until 10 minutes after the show started. The first 10 minutes of the show was lost by people walking in front of me. Don't know if I will go to any more.

    Amazing!

by Wendy on 9/14/22Ball Arena - Denver

From the moment the lights went down it was clear we were in for a treat. The feats of gravity, athleticism, grace and a deep reverence for physical motion. Further, the interactions between "double-lace" couple moved both me and my husband to tears. The subtle strength demonstrated by the duo was moving to say the least.

    OVO Review

    by J68D on 9/14/22Ball Arena - Denver

The Cirque du Soleil performance of OVO was amazing. One of the best performances of Cirque that we have seen. I want to thank the staff for helping my husband with mobility issues and finding a wheelchair and assisting him to his seat. After the performance, the staff member came back and wheeled him all the way to our car. This was so helpful. All the Ball Arena staff was very friendly and helpful. The concessionaire was also very friendly. We had a very positive experience at Ball Arena for the Cirque performance. Thank you.

    Been there done that

by Britt on 9/14/22Ball Arena - Denver

The talent is exceptional, but it seems that every show has similar acts. The story line was lack luster as well. Still waiting to be moved emotionally. Not thinking I will continue to invest my time and money.

    Good show

    by Dave3030 on 9/14/22Ball Arena - Denver

Thought the show was great , love all the things going on , did think it was a little short . For the price of the tickets, just had a feeling it should be a little longer . It was a hour and then a twenty minute break to sell sovereigns , and then came back for about 30 minutes, so in all 1 1/2 hour show. Maybe a little short .
