Cirque du Soleil: OVO on Tour

Talk about creating a buzz. Touring circus company Cirque du Soleil's OVO offers a nonstop, life-affirming, two-hour tribute to the infinitely diverse world of insects. This sensual, acrobatically dazzling show premiered in 2009 as the Montreal-based circus company's 25th production since 1984. The cast for its premiere included 54 performing artists from 16 different countries. Created and directed by Deborah Colker, OVO (Portuguese for "egg") contemplates insects in all their beauty, action and curiosity. Brazilian composer Berna Ceppas transforms their flight, leaps, creeping and crawling into a samba-influenced choreographic spectacle augmented by the constant flutter and hum of real insect sounds.

With well over a thousand performances to date, OVO long ago took flight as one of the Cirque's most popular and rewarding extravaganzas. As Albany, New York's Times Union said of OVO in 2020, "In our digital age, it's reassuring to remember that non-simulated, filter-free entertainment still has the power to dazzle and transport us."

What is Cirque du Soleil: OVO?

Upon its Montreal debut in 2009, OVO became Cirque du Soleil's most audacious and virtuosic new-circus show to date. A trio of principal characters — Master Flipo, Foreigner and Ladybug — keeps this arena spectacular in constant motion, as awestruck insects become intensely interested in a mysterious egg's sudden appearance. OVO teems with life, and Cirque du Soleil's talented cast mirrors the insect world's natural abilities to fly, balance and leap with a lifetime of practice and precision.

During one of the company's largest flying acts, 10 scarab beetles on three platforms toss a single beetle back and forth. A colorfully costumed dragonfly flits about, red ants juggle chunks of kiwi and corncobs with their feet, and butterflies cling gracefully to one another as they float through the air. For OVO's grand finale, the large span used for brilliant lighting effects transforms into a two-story climbing wall onto which trampoline-powered crickets are hurled as though onto a vertical stage. Cockroaches, grasshoppers and other insects serve as supporting characters throughout the evening's dozen acrobatic tours de force.

    It was fabulous

by Sadie on 9/14/22Ball Arena - Denver

Really enjoyed the guy that was moving around in the spiral ring. I didn’t realize bodies could move that way. Also the trampling piece was simply amazing. The entire show was good but those two really popped for me.

    Outstanding performance!

    by J-dub on 9/14/22Ball Arena - Denver

The best Cirq show I've seen yet. Creativity, costumes, music, talent, athleticism and mind-blowing spectacles abound. So. Much. Fun!

    Just Okay

by Mel on 9/14/22Ball Arena - Denver

Been to several Cirque performances and this, by far, was the most disappointing. The seats were narrow (and we aren’t big people!). The performance was underwhelming due to the set-up. The tent performances and Vegas shows are set up in a way that makes the show more exciting and fun. There was no pre-performance fun by the clowns, which is a highlight of Cirque shows. If Cirque returns to Denver without the tent we will not go.

    Too many late arrivals

The atmosphere was compromised by the late arrivals.

    We had a blast!!!

by Mom of three boys on 9/14/22Ball Arena - Denver

My kids went home to "play" Cirque de Soleil after the show because they enjoyed it so much! The acrobatics were spectacular! The clowns were cute :) The music was great as expected. For a traveling show, the set was still so intricate and cool! We really had a great time. My kids' are aged 3-8 and absolutely loved it!

A bit different but great entertainment

by DCo on 9/14/22Ball Arena - Denver

I think kids would enjoy this most of all. Ladybug person was wonderful, but her wings looked disappointing. All other costumes were wonderful. Acrobatics were fabulous as always.

by Holly on 9/14/22Ball Arena - Denver

The colors, the music, and the artists were amazing! My 10 year old daughter was completely mesmerized. It included a very cute comical story too! This was one of the best Cirque shows that I’ve seen.

    Highly disappointed

by drvick on 9/14/22Ball Arena - Denver

Were in VIP center 5th row seats. When purchasing it was not made evident that these were floor seats below stage level. They were very expensive and essentially obstructed view seats. I feel very wiped off overpaying for what were obstructed view seats.

    Very Disappointing

by Ryan on 9/13/22Ball Arena - Denver

Roughly 1/3 of the show was a play. That’s not what I pay to go to a Cirque show for. The actual demonstrations were great but such a large focus on a scripted play makes me not want to attend again.

    Unbelievable!

by Copdrew on 9/13/22Ball Arena - Denver

The show was amazing!! It’s hard to believe what the human body is capable of. The performers are beyond amazing athletes! They are Olympic caliber! I recommend this show to everyone!! You will never regret it! It told such a funny and beautiful story!

    Mediocre at Best

by Charlie B on 9/13/22Ball Arena - Denver

Unfortunately I was not very satisfied with this rendition of cirque. Compared to previous shows I’ve seen, this one seemed childish, drawn out and boring. There was too much time spent on a love story that wasn’t necessary, or engaging, while a majority of the acrobatics were straight out of Americas Got Talent Auditions.

    Excellent show

It was a excellent show, typical of other cirque de solis events we have seen.

    Ball Arena OVO Show

by KLS on 9/13/22Ball Arena - Denver

The actual acrobatics were amazing, but there was too much of the nonsense in between. Although it was a circle stage they did not do well with acknowledging the entire crowd and rotating the view of performers so all could have a chance to get a good view.

    Ovo

by Carlin on 9/13/22Ball Arena - Denver

This was an OK show. I saw Mystere in Vegas, so I expected a show of the same caliber, which it was not. I think because Ovo is a traveling show cirque is not able to pull out all the bells and whistles like they do at a Vegas show.
