Cirque du Soleil: OVO on Tour
Talk about creating a buzz. Touring circus company Cirque du Soleil's OVO offers a nonstop, life-affirming, two-hour tribute to the infinitely diverse world of insects. This sensual, acrobatically dazzling show premiered in 2009 as the Montreal-based circus company's 25th production since 1984. The cast for its premiere included 54 performing artists from 16 different countries. Created and directed by Deborah Colker, OVO (Portuguese for "egg") contemplates insects in all their beauty, action and curiosity. Brazilian composer Berna Ceppas transforms their flight, leaps, creeping and crawling into a samba-influenced choreographic spectacle augmented by the constant flutter and hum of real insect sounds.
With well over a thousand performances to date, OVO long ago took flight as one of the Cirque's most popular and rewarding extravaganzas. As Albany, New York's Times Union said of OVO in 2020, "In our digital age, it's reassuring to remember that non-simulated, filter-free entertainment still has the power to dazzle and transport us."
What is Cirque du Soleil: OVO?
Upon its Montreal debut in 2009, OVO became Cirque du Soleil's most audacious and virtuosic new-circus show to date. A trio of principal characters — Master Flipo, Foreigner and Ladybug — keeps this arena spectacular in constant motion, as awestruck insects become intensely interested in a mysterious egg's sudden appearance. OVO teems with life, and Cirque du Soleil's talented cast mirrors the insect world's natural abilities to fly, balance and leap with a lifetime of practice and precision.
During one of the company's largest flying acts, 10 scarab beetles on three platforms toss a single beetle back and forth. A colorfully costumed dragonfly flits about, red ants juggle chunks of kiwi and corncobs with their feet, and butterflies cling gracefully to one another as they float through the air. For OVO's grand finale, the large span used for brilliant lighting effects transforms into a two-story climbing wall onto which trampoline-powered crickets are hurled as though onto a vertical stage. Cockroaches, grasshoppers and other insects serve as supporting characters throughout the evening's dozen acrobatic tours de force.
Great show. The artists were engagng, very well prepared, the show had a nice flow, I loved the storyline. Well done
Such an amazing unforgettable experience. The performers were amazing and so talented. They made each performance look so beautiful and artistic. We will definitely look forward to another show.
Once again, Cirque du Soleil has not failed to impress. Amazing talent, very professional. Well worth the cost of the tickets. Highly recommend.
Show was amazing my only complaint is my seats were too far away so next time I know to make sure I’m closer for any event at the Don Haskins center. That place was just too big for the little stage
Great experience and fantastic show. Cirque du Soleil is a garanted of fun
I went with all my family but my sister and I enjoyed it the most, there wasn't a single moment when we were not surprised.
FANTASTIC GREAT WONDERFUL SPARTACUS 👏 😄👌👍I HAD A BLAST
Like always, Cirque du soleil the best shows in the world. Best quality on actors, lights, music, costumes, makeup, etc... The Organization of UTEP it was horrible, difficult to find the seats, the people that work there, they didn't know where the seats are located. Instead of helping with the organization and help people to seat and to not take pictures with flash, they were sitting looking the show.
really enjoyed it. wonderful talent and the acts are so beautiful. lovely experience. my mom and i had a great time!
I have been to many cirque du soleil. This was probably the one I didn’t enjoy. It wasn’t as amusing and as exciting that I even fell asleep. Kinda disappointed but of course I see the hard work they have do.
We enjoyed the show and we were on the edge of our seats with excitement most of the evening!! Side note: The venue’s floor and staircases were very sticky and in need of a detailed cleaning. This was the only negative feedback from the evening.
My grand daughter and daughter loved it…. And so did I. Amazing!🤩
Beautiful! Engaging! Powerful! Inclusive! Excellent! Environmentally friendly!
Bring more like this... Cirque Du Soleil is always a guarantee.
The performance itself was most enjoyable, in an innocent whimsical way. The skills of the athletes were superb, and the "clowns" were most entertaining. The only reason the rating above was a 4 star was the lack of event personnel to show folks to their seats, and the attendees in El Paso's penchant for arriving late. Thus, those of us who paid extra for close in viewing were constantly interrupted by late arrivers trying to find their seats. The trapeze flyers were exceptional, but our favorites were the trampoline "greens."
We have been to every Denver Cirque show and all the Vegas and Orlando shows over the last 20 years. This one was average compared to others we have been to. But the worst part of the experience was that directly in front of our seats were large wires and cables which obstructed our view of much of the stage. There should have been a disclosure warning of an obstructed view. For $150.00 per ticket this was not what we expected. We chose front row tickets to avoid exactly this type of thing. Our tickets were Row one but surprise? They added a temporary Row in front of ours! That was not a huge deal but the obstructed view was a deal breaker. This will probably be our last Cirque show.
100% amazing I recommend to everybody and their families👏👏👏👏
It was great loved the show was glad to see you guys coming back!!!!
We were enthralled by the talent, charm, athleticism, and choreography of the performers in OVO. The costumes were amazing. We have seen many Cirque shows and this one did not disappoint. We did miss the ambiance and atmosphere of the tents though. The venue of a sports arena is just not comparable to the tents, even though the seats were more comfortable and it was great to have bathrooms that were not portapotties.
I love each presentation of Cirque Du Soleil but this one was very special. The whole audience seemed to ooh and ahh extra loudly. Loved the insects!
