Christopher Cross made history when his debut self-titled album was released in 1980. The album featured the international hit songs Sailing, Run Like the Wind and Never Be The Same. It went on to win five Grammy Awards, including—for the first time ever—the four most prestigious awards: Record of the Year (for the single “Sailing”), Album of the Year, Song of the Year (also for “Sailing”), and Best New Artist. An extraordinary song writer, Cross wrote all these songs and another of the most famous songs of the time - “Arthurs Theme (The best that you can do)” which he co-wrote with Burt Bacharach & Peter Allen and featured in the film Arthur that starred Liza Minelli and Dudley Moore. Arthur’s Theme won the 1981 Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Christopher Cross has also worked with some music greats and shared the stage with some music icons – from Mike McDonald – who sang backing vocals on Ride Like The Wind through to singing backing vocals with Carl Wilson on David Lee Roth’s version of California Girls.
Early in his career Christopher Cross and his band were the opening band for Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull whilst in 1970 he subbed in for Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple for a show in San Antonio.
Thirty years since his stellar debut into the music business, Cross continues recording and touring across the nation, stopping at venues such as the Depot (Salt Lake City). He has released multiple albums and continued to contribute to film and tv soundtracks – including shows such as 30 Rock (he wrote Lemon’s Theme for the soundtrack).
His most recent album, Secret Ladder was released in 2014. The 13 track album, influenced by the likes of Joni Mitchell and Randy Newman, was written mostly with Rob Meurer and again Cross has worked with the finest musicians including bassist Will Lee (of the Fab Faux and Late Night with David Letterman), drummer Keith Carlock (Steely Dan and Toto), guitarist Eric Johnson, saxophonist David Mann, and vocalists Michael McDonald and Jeff Foskett (Brian Wilson’s musical director.
Great show. Voice is still the same. Just wish more time to get in more of the old songs.
Christopher Cross is always great in concert. So happy to see him play each time.
Christopher Cross is an amazing singer; voice is still spectacular.
Excellent . Such a cool guy ! His vocals were so clear and crisp. Sounds just like years ago,
This was a great concert! Christopher played all his top hits and several new compositions. The band talent was superb--2 female back-up singers, bass player, pianist, clarinet/sax player, and drummer. All were great and the drummer was very innovative. Christopher's voice was as good as ever. Awesome experience!
Really enjoyed the Christopher Cross concert. I always wanted to see him play live and he did not disappoint. Great guitar player who isn't afraid to recognize his fellow bandmates who were all wonderful. Looking forward to his new CD coming out in June.
I went to this with friends who are big Christopher Cross fans. I liked his music way back in the day, but wasnt a super huge fan. I really enjoyed the concert. He still sounds really good and I was pleasantly surprised to learn that he is also a really talented musician. He played both acoustic and electric guitar solos that were pretty amazing. The rest of the band was also really good. He had two female back up singers that both did a duet with him during the evening. They were both very talented singers and really did a great job harmonizing with him. Love the Birchmere's small intimate feel. Spending an evening with good friends, good food, and a great band. Doesnt get any better than that.
Christopher Cross is the ultimate performer. Good mix of the standards and more recent songs. The two duets with the back up singers was well done. The Winds player was outstanding and a definite asset to the line up.
Mostly new band members and two great backup singers helped make this a great show. The setlist was excellent, with many album cuts that never made it on radio. Some good songs from Doctor Faith, including Hey Boy, were fun to hear. Christopher sounded great and still plays a mean guitar. Excited to hear that he has a new cd coming out this summer.
The show was awesome. My wife and I truly enjoyed the concert. This was my first time ever seeing him in person along with ever seeing him in concert as well. He and the band are just GREAT!!!!! His Music will never die, along with his voice. He sound just as good as my albums I have on hand...
Christopher Cross is one of my old time favorites. His voice and way of playing music is a breath of fresh air again in comparison to the so-called popular music today. Sailing is one of my favorite songs and it was great to see that live. I do wish he played Think of Laura though. Overall, my wife and I had a great time.
Concert was great however Chris seems to simply be going through the motions. He definitely does not seem happy doing what he claims he loves. He seems to not at all be happy.l
It's amazing when u hear about an older performer. You think do they still have it, will they perform their songs effectively??? I had these questions in my head but I took the rest on seeing Christopher Cross in concert. I must say i was very impressed with Chris. He sang all of his hits...looked the same minus the hair & his band performed well. Sailing is such a classic. I can listen to this song everyday because it's so simple. I enjoyed hearing Arthur's Theme, Ride like the wind. If you are looking forward to seeing an old school performer, make sure that Mr. Cross is on your list.
Loved it!! His voice was just like it was in the 80's. Played his tried and true music along with some new stuff. It was wonderful!
I've enjoyed Christopher Cross' music for over 30 years. Unfortunately for him, and me, not having any real hits past his second album has doomed to him to tour to venues who only want him to play for 70 minutes and call it good. He sings just as well as he did when he first exploded on the scene in 1980, and his songwriting has gotten nothing but better. His band was semi-marginal, with two players reading off of sheet music. I realize some people go to these shows to hear the hits, and I want to hear them too, but I would much rather hear a two hour show with lots of new songs. I think artists, like Christopher Cross, underestimate their audience. I think they assume the most people in attendance are just there to hear the hits, and "don't bother me with your new stuff." I hope at some point he could do a two-hour acoustic show, similar to the Bryan Adams "Bare Bones" tour, that plays for over two hours while reinventing old songs and playing some new stuff.
what a suprise this show was! I thought Christopher had given up touring years ago so when i saw his show advertised and that the ticket prices were so reasonable i just had to check him out. The only disapointment was the small crowd the set list was excellent and the new songs especially the one about reality stars were really good. There were lots of hits on offer Ride like the wind, Arthurs theme and sailing (my fave) ect but it was some of his other tunes like deputy dan and Laura that really stood out. If you get chance to check out his show do so!!
The guy from Texas who came on the scene in the early 1980's, and looking like anything but a rocker, still has it with his unusual sound and musical talent. I thoroughly enjoyed this show, although the woman sitting next to me couldn't keep her smart phone off and was texting throughout the evening. Why do people like that pay good money to see a terrific artist, only to find and send messages her life's priority? It was annoying to have her phone screen shining in my eyes the entire evening. Anyway, what is amazing about Cross is his guitar play. If you like Cross because of his singing, you walk out breathless finding out that the intricate guitar work during his songs is all him. And he had five different guitars on stage. He played for well over 1-1/2 hours, so you do get your money's worth with Chris. Much recommended.
we had a lovely evening listening to music under the stars...
Great concert with his band. The sound was excellent, couldn't get any better. He was also able to take pictures and sign autographs at the end of the show. A real class act and friendly. Worth the money.
An outstanding venue created a very intimate event. Band was superb with world class percussionist and saxaphone. Christopher Cross did not disappoint. The man has Soul!!. Songs from new album were great as were the old time songs. The man is a real blessing. His band is excellent in its own right.
