About

Acclaimed Grammy Award-winning mandolinist, singer, songwriter, composer, and MacArthur Fellow recipient of the prestigious "Genius Grant", Chris Thile is a multifaceted musical talent, described by The Guardian as "that rare being: an all-round musician," and hailed by NPR as a "genre-defying musical genius." Thile is a founding member of the highly influential string bands Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek, and has collaborated with countless luminaries from Yo-Yo Ma to Fiona Apple to Brad Mehldau. For four years, Thile hosted public radio favorite Live from Here with Chris Thile (formerly known as A Prairie Home Companion). With his broad outlook, Thile creates a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike, giving the listener "one joyous arc, with the linear melody and vertical harmony blurring into a single web of gossamer beauty" (New York Times).

Over the last year, Thile has been touring with Nickel Creek in support of the critically acclaimed 2023 release Celebrants, and captivating audiences with a playfully ambitious biographical composition entitled ATTENTION! (a narrative song cycle for extroverted mandolinist and orchestra).

The wide-ranging program of Thile's 2025-2026 solo performances will feature selections from his acclaimed solo recordings of Bach's Sonatas and Partitas - including the upcoming second volume out this autumn - alongside his signature mix of classical, folk and improvisational brilliance.

  • Unimpressed with young musician and crowd

    by 1QWE2 on 5/8/18Ryman Auditorium - NashvilleRating: 3 out of 5

Getting in and out of the event was fine. Do not carry a pocket knife. Chris is a very enthusiastic performer. He cares about his audience and his fellow performers. One of his bands seemed to be a hard rock group. Not good. He is a young man who draws a young crowd. The music was not of my age or my preferred genre. So I was out of place. His comedian was not funny unless you enjoyed bashing our current President, the South and America. Much of the crowd did enjoy him, I was very much out of sync with them. There where many of us who walked out. The story telling I used to enjoy was still there but Chris was not part of it. It was weak at best. He was music only. I would check out Chris's music before you attend. Do not expect the the old Home Prairie Companion.

  • Awesome show!

This was a great show. Funny, great music, great personalities--what more could you ask for to be entertained. Chris is a great host. Very talented and has a very unique personality and presence. For music, you can't get much better than Dave Rawlings, Gillian Welch and Willie Watson. Love living close to Nashville. You just never know who is going to show up!

  • Such a great show

Chris Thile is a true showman. Such a great variety of music and artists. I would go to eveyone of these shows if I could afford it! NPR has finally passed the torch to my generation and created a gem of entertainment.

I go to many concerts. I have not been to a more satisfying show in years: the talent and the warmth of the performers shine through.

  • Wow just wow

by Anonymous on 5/8/18Ryman Auditorium - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

I have wanted to see the Prarie Home Companion show for years. When I found out David Rawlings and Gillian Welch were going to be on Saturdays show at the Rhyman, I had to go! What a show Chris Thile put on! My wife and I were both just blown away with the whole show. I have always enjoyed listening to the show but to actually experience 'Live from here' was awesome, and even more being in the Rhyman! Look forward to the next time!

  • Locked In

No words to describe the talent level and musicianship going on...a truly moving experience.

  • Overwhelmingly beautiful

by Indefinitely on 9/17/17Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Brad and Chris is a match made in heaven. This concert has easily become one of my favorites I've ever attended, and The Town Hall has the perfect atmosphere and acoustics to go along with it. Would definitely attend a show of this duo. Would highly recommend seeing your favorite artists at The Town Hall if they happen to play there.

  • Less is more

by ClefNotes on 9/16/17Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Two master musicians get together in the parlor, roll back the rug, and decide to make some good music. A few stories are shared. A few riffs are stolen from J.S. Bach, Charlie Parker, Bill Monroe, and Bud Powell. There is virtuosic give and take. Somehow you and a friend are lucky to share a couch and witness this. Two hours later you wonder where the time went, yet time paradoxically seemed to slow down. A better world was possible, a place for speaking thoughtfully, listening to one's fellow, having a sense of humor and playfulness, and striving to be one's best self. Town Hall mimics this experience and no two people could have filled it more fully than Mehldau and Thile. No gimmicks, no special effects, just two guys enjoying themselves and an appreciative audience.

Chris Thile and Brad Mehldau were amazing! Master musicians.

  • A Brilliant Revelation!

by Sandhugs on 9/16/17Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I knew well Chris Thile's work with Nickel Creek and The Punch Brothers but was not familiar with Brad Mahldau, Together these two virtuoso performers, Chris on mandolin and Brad on piano were magical together, blending elements of classical, jazz, bluegrass and rock into a spectacular amalgram of music. Will definitely be buying tickets for Chris Thile's Prairie Home Companion shows in in December at Town Hall.

  • A rare treat!

    by AlanS1 on 9/16/17Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Two musicians, both of whom who are the very best of their craft, blending two decidedly different genres to create an undefinable new one. Thile and Mehldau have pulled off an absolute magic trick and left the audience with their jaws dropped.

  • A once in a lifetime concert

    by Hobknob57 on 6/7/17Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

This was an extraordinary concert. With just two musicians I was as enthralled and entertained as I have ever been in the forty plus years I have been attending concerts. I had been an admirer of the work of Chris Thile as a member of Nickel Creek and the Punch Brothers, but this was far and away a musical experience I will never forget. And Bela Fleck is the consummate banjo virtuoso. I can't believe I have lived this long and not been more exposed to his work.

Incredible! Delightful music, great interaction with audience.

  • WOW -- THRILLING

by GraceGryphon on 5/31/17Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

These two musical masters made magic Sunday night at the Southern Theater. They left me both satisfied and wanting more. It was an intense musical experience, and I am so grateful I was there.

  • Chris and Béla were amazing

The talent in just one of them is truly unbelievable... but to have both on one stage... ridiculous!! So good

  • Birds of a feather Thile and Fleck together.

by Fuganzaman on 5/31/17Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Stunning, brilliant virtuosic. The two best of their age blazing the stage.

  • Fleck & Thile

by DrTeddy on 5/31/17Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

These two bring the musicianship & comeraderie in volumes rarely findable in midical groups of size - AMAZING!!!

Awesome show! Both are great artists on their own, even better when hearing them together!

  • Excellent show with two great talents

by SsAaMmMmYy on 5/31/17Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

I bought tickets for my fiancee, who is an avid Chris Thile fanboy. We were not disappointed. Both Bela Fleck and Chris Thile are among the most if not the most talented banjo and mandolin players in the world, and they did not disappoint. There was also lots of wittiness and jokes to round out the show!
