About

Acclaimed Grammy Award-winning mandolinist, singer, songwriter, composer, and MacArthur Fellow recipient of the prestigious "Genius Grant", Chris Thile is a multifaceted musical talent, described by The Guardian as "that rare being: an all-round musician," and hailed by NPR as a "genre-defying musical genius." Thile is a founding member of the highly influential string bands Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek, and has collaborated with countless luminaries from Yo-Yo Ma to Fiona Apple to Brad Mehldau. For four years, Thile hosted public radio favorite Live from Here with Chris Thile (formerly known as A Prairie Home Companion). With his broad outlook, Thile creates a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike, giving the listener "one joyous arc, with the linear melody and vertical harmony blurring into a single web of gossamer beauty" (New York Times).

Over the last year, Thile has been touring with Nickel Creek in support of the critically acclaimed 2023 release Celebrants, and captivating audiences with a playfully ambitious biographical composition entitled ATTENTION! (a narrative song cycle for extroverted mandolinist and orchestra).

The wide-ranging program of Thile's 2025-2026 solo performances will feature selections from his acclaimed solo recordings of Bach's Sonatas and Partitas - including the upcoming second volume out this autumn - alongside his signature mix of classical, folk and improvisational brilliance.

  • Best ever!

by Libby on 11/6/24Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts - GreensboroRating: 5 out of 5

This was my sixth time attending a live event featuring Chris Thile. Every time was delightful but the performance with the Greensboro Symphony was the best. Thile is a master musician, with an angelic voice but his symphonic narrative was a surprising, beautiful experience. And the Greensboro Symphony is fortunate to have a talented new conductor. Dragons are real, hooray!

  • Wonderful evening

I had not attended an event at the Steven Tanger Center before and it lived up to all the positive comments I've heard from friends who have. Chris Thile is a gem, such an entertaining performer! You almost forget to notice what a virtuoso he truly is. I look forward to his next work. The only reason this isn't a 5-start review is that there was a mic issue during the 2nd encore and despite the wonderful acoustics it was hard to hear the master at work.

  • Good, but

We thought we were going to hear more collaboration but this seemed more performance art. It was probably billed that way and it was not what we were expecting. Thanks lovely venue and service was really good.

One of the best concerts I've ever seen. Chris Thile and the Virginia Symphony put on a magical performance. I was lucky to be there.

Been following Thile since early Nickel Creek. He never ceases to amaze. What a rare thoroughly entertaining talent. A true genius and master artist.

  • Chris is the GOAT!

Chris Thile is my favorite musician of all time! His music has brought so much joy to my life. He can play with so many different musicians and their music is so gorgeous. He’s hysterically funny, brilliant and the best mandolin player you’ll ever see. I highly recommend catching one (or all!) of his shows!

  • Genius

by greymutt on 5/28/23Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Chris Thile was back in full form this week at the Bijou. He played with and without a microphone (I had a bit of a hard time hearing the unamplified segments.) I really enjoyed the all of the music from Laysongs to “Don’t Think Twice.” He had this audience eating out of his hand the whole time! Amythyst Kiah played first and was amazing; unfortunately the two did not play together at all.

  • Magical Mandolin

by Hoopdoc on 8/26/22Old Whaling Church - EdgartownRating: 5 out of 5

Chris Thile put on a performance of sheer genius at The Whaling Church on August 15th in Edgartown, MA. The standing ovation Chris received before playing a note was well deserved as his virtuosity and creativity are of the highest border. It was indeed a tremendous night!
