After 25 years, CHICAGO is still the one musical with everything that makes Broadway shimmy-shake: a universal tale of fame, fortune, and all that jazz, with one show stopping song after another and the most astonishing dancing you've ever seen. No wonder CHICAGO has been honored with 6 Tony Awards®, 2 Olivier Awards, a Grammy®, and thousands of standing ovations. As we celebrate our 25th anniversary --you've got to come see why the name on everyone's lips is still...CHICAGO.
Great venue to see Chicago or any musical at that. Great show
Everything was reminiscent of a well executed High School performance. The set and costumes were bland and lifeless until the final scene. The choreography felt forced and unnatural. What saved the show was the band. They did a phenomenal job with an adjusted version of the soundtrack that gave it a more mellow feel. That said, with the mellow soundtrack, more was needed on the stage. Overall, a disappointment.
I have seen Chicago before and was expecting the same kind of rousing high energy show, but it was not so. first of all, seats were high balcony, but the acoustics weren't very good up there. I understand the limitations of those seats but would think they could improve the sound. Most of the stage taken up by the band, no set or costume changes, not much action! The scene when both girls were doing the show together occurs with them mostly standing in the same place throughout. I yawned through a lot of the second act.
The stage was too small and after seeing it in NY 20 years ago this production felt much different and not at the level I expected.
Music was great, production was really budgeted. No costume changes or scenery changes. I think some of the cast weren’t great. Amos and Velma were the least impressive. Mama was stationary but impressive voice. It wasn’t anything to watch really.
It was extraordinary since the first appearence. All the songs and dances were really good. I really enjoyed every second
Really enjoyed this performance of Chicago the Musical. The cast did a wonderful job bringing the famous story to life with some excellent vocals and dancing. Highly recommend seeing this current iteration of the musical.
Great the only problem was that second floor ubications have limited view and you couldn't see the whole band perform.
The musical was so good! I paid for the experience of the suite before and intermission it was very disappointing. The cheese trays should have been replenished for the cost I was very disappointed.
A really good show, actors were fabulous, great production and great space. All the ushers were exceptional!
We enjoy a lot of theater and have a child who is a professor actor. The ensemble was great - terrific dancers. But the leads, especially Velma, seemed as if they were holding back - not totally invested. We were also surprised at the lack of Broadway credits amongst the cast and found out later that this was a non-equity show. Why is a non-equity show at CIBC??? Or featured as a Broadway in Chicago show? Disappointing. We will be more careful in our choice of future Broadway in Chicago offerings. Glad we had Cyber Monday discounts because paying full fare for this show would have been extremely upsetting.
Well, nothing can compare to the movie, because Richard Gere is in my top three comma Chicago. The musical was fabulous. It was a great show, and I really enjoyed it, especially the orchestra. The conductor was really having a great time and you could tell. The cast was wonderful, but no one can compare to Richard Gere, or Queen Latifah in my humble opinion. Overall, I really had a great time and really enjoyed seeing the show.
Chicago was great, this version brought back memories. The actors and actresses were spot on to what I remembered. The theater was clean and great architecturally. I just forgot how small the leg room was lol. Note to self when choosing seats. Overall great night out with spouse, family, friends or significant other.
The show had some great moments, but overall was just missing that wow factor! I love broadway and have seen so many shows that I could never pick a favorite. This felt a little amateurish as a production.
If you're expecting the movie musical version DO NOT expect that from this show. It's a very stripped down minimal version compared to the movie. Think of this performance as more like a vaudeville show that happens to have a plot woven into it. However, the singing is fantastic, the choreography (which has been incredibly faithful to Fosses original version from the Broadway revival) is gorgeous and intricate, and overall the musical is satire, sarcastic, dark, and hilarious overall. The simplicity of the set up and costuming lets you focus on the performance and music. Overall a fantastic show, and comparing it to the movie is like comparing apples to oranges. Both are awesome, but don't expect them to be the same.
The choreography was very good and the dancers were great. The orchestra was also very good but sometimes overpowered the vocals making it difficult to hear.
It was ok but the orchestra was too loud too often. The dancing by the leads were acceptable but not what should be cast. Sorry.
Acoustics horrible. Ruined overall experience due to inability to hear lyrics / dialogue
I had high hopes for this show as it is one of my favorites. The cast is all unknown to me, which was exciting. There are some real stars in the cast and some folks who need more experience. Standouts- Billy Flynn, Momma Morton, Mary Sunshine. They were all strong characters who could really sell song and dance. The woman who played Roxie is a great dancer and singer. Her characterization could be stronger, but I preferred her to Velma. The Velma character was bland and awkward in spots. She can sing but her dancing was stiff. She did not go far enough with the character. I never believed her as a killer. Amos was well cast and pulled off the role. The ensemble was very good. They all seemed like they'd been trained by Fosse himself. He'd be proud seeing the choreography in this show. The orchestra was top notch. Sometimes the vocals got lost in the loud music, but I liked having the band in stage. Costumes were terrific. Sets were clever and simple. All and all I enjoyed myself very much. It was my birthday to boot. I think if this cast stays together and continues to mature in their roles, this will be a top notch production! My best to all of you!!
Supporting dancers were fabulous, timing and execution perfect!! Leads were weak and didn’t connect with the audience. G.A. James, who played reporter Mary Sunshine, had the best voice by far! Jeff Brooks, who played Billy Flynn, just couldn’t hold a long note on key. Christina Wells, who played Mama Morton, has some pipes but her lack of acting chops prevented her from connecting with the audience. She was very static in her stance and the few moves she made didn’t have the impact that others in this role have had. The play lacked pace, it seemed soooo slow. The venue is intimate but having bathrooms only in the basement creates a huge backup during intermission, I have never seen such a long line for a men’s room and the lady’s line was even longer. Seats in this theater were designed for another generation, a much smaller generation, and lack width and leg room to be comfortable for two hours plus. Overall, it was disappointing.
