Chicago Blackhawks History

The Chicago Blackhawks were founded in 1926 and were part of the Original Six group of franchises, which constituted the NHL from 1942 until league expansion in 1967. The club won Stanley Cup Championships in the 1933-1934 and 1937-1938 seasons, but success proved largely elusive over the next two decades, except for one appearance in the final in 1943-1944. The 1960s signaled a rebirth for the franchise, with future Hall of Famers Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Pierre Pilote, and Glenn Hall leading the way. The Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the 1961 Stanley Cup Final, collecting their third championship.

The addition of eventual Hall of Fame goaltender Tony Esposito ahead of the 1969-1970 season marked the start of an era during which the team earned a Playoff berth in 28 consecutive seasons. In 1971 and 1973 the Blackhawks reached the Stanley Cup Final, losing both times to the Montreal Canadiens. More excellence followed in the 1990s, aided by the likes of Ed Belfour and Jeremy Roenick, as the Blackhawks finished with the league's best record in 1990-1991 and made the Stanley Cup Final in 1991-1992.

By selecting their eventual captain Jonathan Toews third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft, the Blackhawks began stocking up on young talent, also adding Patrick Kane first overall the following year. They returned to the Playoffs in 2008-2009, and in the very next season, Chicago defeated the Philadelphia Flyers for their first Stanley Cup Championship in 49 years. They added championships in 2013—beating the Boston Bruins in a thrilling series that included three overtime games—and 2015, topping the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Chicago Blackhawks at United Center

Home to the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls, United Center(Opens in new tab)—which opened in 1994—is the largest NHL arena in the United States, with a capacity of 19,717 for hockey games. The idea for the arena was created in 1988 by William Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Jerry Reinsdorf, majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls. The United Center has hosted the Stanley Cup Finals three times: in 2010, 2013 and 2015. The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup Championship in 2015 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at home in the sixth game—the first time since 1938 that the franchise clinched the Cup in Chicago.

  • Our First Blackhawks game

by Larry on 11/30/24United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I have been fans ever since we got married in 2010. However, with the Hawks being a tough ticket to get, we never had an opportunity to see them play in person until now. The atmosphere was electric and the team played awesome!!!

  • 12/10 experience!

by Lex on 11/24/24United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Me and my boyfriend went to the United Center for the Panthers vs Blackhawks game.(it was my birthday gift to him) Neither of us had been to an NHL game before, nor the united center. We drove from ~3 hours away. The whole process was extremely easy, and parking was FANTASTIC. Got to park right out front for only $30. The game was great and everyone was respectful, well mannered, and polite. Will be visiting again!

by Al on 10/22/24United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Went to see my hockey team (Buffalo Sabres) play against the Blackawks. It truly was an amazing experience. The scoreboard is new and had so much information regarding the players on it. To hear the pipe organ is a once in a lifetime experience The best part was my team the Buffalo Sabres won the game.

  • Loved seeing the Blackhawks at the Fiserv!

by Tamers on 10/9/24Fiserv Forum - MilwaukeeRating: 4 out of 5

Loved seeing the Blackhawks play a preseason game at the Fiserv, it was fun experience and everyone enjoyed themselves. I do hope they keep coming back. I only gave 4 stars because $15-18 for one beer/seltzer is just a little insane. I wish it didn't have to be so expensive for food and drink!

  • Awesome

  • Home Away From Home Hawks

by Sassysandralee on 10/8/24Fiserv Forum - MilwaukeeRating: 4 out of 5

Classy cashless venue. Great setup. Legroom a bit short. Can't imagine a bad view anywhere. Great pregame area outside the venue.

  • Boring

by AmyinWI on 10/8/24Fiserv Forum - MilwaukeeRating: 1 out of 5

The most boring sporting event I’ve ever been to. Game was fine but the crowd was practically quiet. Little to no commentary. Much better seeing them in Chicago.

  • Fun! Fun!

  • Manners People!

    by a fan on 9/28/24United Center - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

I should have known better at a preseason game. Dude to my left was there with his girlfriend to drink. However don’t sprawl yourself out like your on your couch at home. Be respectful of the space of the person next to you. People in front thought it was “cute” their little girl brought a sign that obstructed my view every time she held it up. The UC security actually should have asked them not to have her holding it up so high or waving it around the entire game. The dudes to my left also were there to drink and had zero idea of hockey etiquette, and kept getting up during game play. I wanted to sit close to the glass to watch the game and see the players, not get jabbed in the ribs by the drunk dude next to me and have a sign in my face half the game. Now I know why I stay home.

  • Great experience

by Gena on 9/28/24United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent experience and great seats. Had a great time!!!

  • Nice experience

by Clement on 9/28/24United Center - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

It was nice. Just too bad that there is not more interactions with the players especially Chen we get tickets so close from the bench and their entry to the locker room

  • First NHL match

by Gonner on 4/19/24United Center - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

This was the first ice hockey match my friend & I have attended and we had an enjoyable time despite the result (we were supporting the Blackhawks as we were on holiday in Chicago). Entry into the stadium, via the Madhouse, was smooth and we were happy with the food choices. Our only comment on the food / beverage front was that we couldn't get a hot drink (hot chocolate) on level 3. We were also happy with the view from our seats and how comfortable they were. We also enjoyed the atmosphere and the in game entertainment - you don't get the same in UK football (soccer) matches!

  • Dining

by Shoot around the boards on 4/18/24United Center - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Hockey live is not like any other sport. The game was more than expected with the Blackhawks winning. Being an afternoon game dining was the only disappointment. My wife and I found the BBQ to be the best choice. Have been to other rinks and have found more variety than event food.
