Chicago Blackhawks History

The Chicago Blackhawks were founded in 1926 and were part of the Original Six group of franchises, which constituted the NHL from 1942 until league expansion in 1967. The club won Stanley Cup Championships in the 1933-1934 and 1937-1938 seasons, but success proved largely elusive over the next two decades, except for one appearance in the final in 1943-1944. The 1960s signaled a rebirth for the franchise, with future Hall of Famers Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Pierre Pilote, and Glenn Hall leading the way. The Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the 1961 Stanley Cup Final, collecting their third championship.

The addition of eventual Hall of Fame goaltender Tony Esposito ahead of the 1969-1970 season marked the start of an era during which the team earned a Playoff berth in 28 consecutive seasons. In 1971 and 1973 the Blackhawks reached the Stanley Cup Final, losing both times to the Montreal Canadiens. More excellence followed in the 1990s, aided by the likes of Ed Belfour and Jeremy Roenick, as the Blackhawks finished with the league's best record in 1990-1991 and made the Stanley Cup Final in 1991-1992.

By selecting their eventual captain Jonathan Toews third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft, the Blackhawks began stocking up on young talent, also adding Patrick Kane first overall the following year. They returned to the Playoffs in 2008-2009, and in the very next season, Chicago defeated the Philadelphia Flyers for their first Stanley Cup Championship in 49 years. They added championships in 2013—beating the Boston Bruins in a thrilling series that included three overtime games—and 2015, topping the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Chicago Blackhawks at United Center

Home to the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls, United Center(Opens in new tab)—which opened in 1994—is the largest NHL arena in the United States, with a capacity of 19,717 for hockey games. The idea for the arena was created in 1988 by William Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Jerry Reinsdorf, majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls. The United Center has hosted the Stanley Cup Finals three times: in 2010, 2013 and 2015. The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup Championship in 2015 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at home in the sixth game—the first time since 1938 that the franchise clinched the Cup in Chicago.

I live in Brazil and had never been to a Hockey game, I loved it, I started to admire the sport and I will follow it even though I live in a country where the sport is not practiced. The gym structure is very good.

I only went because of Predators coming to town, so it was a good experience, so far everyone I’ve gone to Chicago for a preds game they’ve won so, not a bad experience at all.

  • Great experience but tough on wallet

by Robert on 4/15/24United Center - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Going to the United Center is always fun. Watching our beloved Blackhawks win or lose. The only negative thing is that food and ticket prices are so expensive and that it is hard for a blue collar worker to attend more often.

  • Expensive boredom

by Jim on 4/10/24United Center - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

Incredibly over priced everything for sub par entertainment

Five of six seventy year old men who shared a house off campus at WIU met to celebrate life. The sixth man is deceased. We gathered to laugh and share a weekend plus see the Blackhawks defeat the Dallas Stars at the United Center. The process with Ticketmaster was seemless. I was able to forward tickets from Tennessee to Illinois, Wisconsin, and Ohio. Great process.

  • Game Time!

by Phxkeller on 3/21/24United Center - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

Going out of state for a Pro-NHL game was a great experience to see the energy of the crowd supporting the home team! We took in 2 Blackhawks games at the United Center and had a good dinner experience in the Stadium Club also. Our 200 level tickets were a nice view in row 1, but the "200 level service"did not happen. No one came for drink order and no way to call, the concession stands were close and no to busy to quickly get what you want and go. Not sure what the extra $80 per ticket for lexus club access was for so that is disappointing to blow $160 bucks when you could get the same service everywhere in the arena.

  • Outstanding atmosphere

by Spoilers on 3/20/24United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

For two bottom feeder teams, the atmosphere in the arena was outstanding. So many Bedard jerseys !!! The national anthem was breathtaking. My first time at the united center. The scoreboard is amazing.. I can’t imagine how Loud it would Be for a Playoff game. Great tradition

  • One of the best games I’ve ever been to!!!

by Dragon master on 3/20/24United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

2nd row on the goal line was an absolute epic experience!!! Connor Bedard getting 5 points in a single game was unreal. I can’t wait to go see this extremely talented young group of players once they blossom into an unbeatable force.

  • Club section for life!

by Ty on 3/18/24United Center - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first time sitting in club section. We had amazing seats AND a server! Great service and great game. The only thing I didn't like is the limited food choices. But now I know to grab something else of I want from another floor before hand.

    by Rob-BigOaks on 3/13/24United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

A couple of friends came to Chicago to help me celebrate a milestone birthday. The Chicago Blackhawks and the United Center made it a fantastic experience. From the puppy petting pen and air hockey games near our gate entrance to the Hawks fighting spirit in their victory, it was a happy occasion from start to finish 😀

  • Awesome fans

by Justina on 3/3/24United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I went to watch the Colorado Avalanche game and it was so much fun! Even though the seats were far from ice, the view was still good. Even though the Blackhawks lost, the fans were super nice and weren’t rude at all. The stadium was nice, I will happily recommend watching a game here.

  • Chicago Blackhawks Chelios Retirement

by Crallimann on 3/2/24United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

What a fantastic day at the Madhouse! The Chelios Jersey Retirement ceremony and a great game against the Red Wings was the best experience. Feel so lucky to have been there to see #7 raised to the rafters! And it was Kane's return to the United Center. Can't wait to go back.
