Citrus Bowl History

The Citrus Bowl in Orlando is one of college football's signature events, a burst of Florida sunshine on New Year's Day. The game, traditionally played on January 1, usually pits an SEC team against a representative from the Big Ten.

The event was born in 1947 as the Tangerine Bowl, with the Catawba Indians beating the Maryville Scots, 31-6. The initial sponsors were members of a local Elks Lodge who each put up $100 to cover expenses. Proceeds went to the Harry Anna Children's Hospital, which is why the bowl would come to be known as the "Little Bowl with the Big Heart." The stadium, built in 1936 under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration, accommodated just 8,900 fans.

Today the stadium — now called Camping World Stadium — is a fully modern, 65,000-capacity facility, and the Citrus Bowl is a centerpiece of the bowl season. While it lacks the pageantry of the Rose Bowl on the other side of the country, the game is rich with the sport's history, both bad and good. The unbeaten 1955 Hillsdale College football team refused an invitation to the bowl after officials said the school's four black players would not be allowed to play. Likewise, University of Buffalo players in 1958 elected to skip the game because its two black players would have been kept off the field. But by 1966, the color line had been lifted, and Morgan State became the first historically black college to play in the bowl. The Bears went on to beat the West Chester Golden Rams, 14-6.

Other memorable games include the 1996 Citrus Bowl, in which fourth-ranked Tennessee beat fourth-ranked Ohio State, 20-14, and the 1969 edition, in which Toledo hung 56 points on Davidson, a bowl record that stands today.

Great game experience. Online tickets worked without issue. Easy direction and simple transferring as they where a gift. Will use again for future events.

  • Fanfest Experience

by Hogan on 1/4/20Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

So I came down to game solo, not knowing what to expect.. I arrived at FanFest around 9:30am and proceeded to have a great time.. Met some wonderful, friendly, passionate fans from both teams and made me feel completely comfortable. All the vendors were great, plenty of options on food and drink, got some outstanding pictures with the many different props that were available, and the overall vibe was fantastic.. Really put together a great experience.. Area outside stadium little sketchy, but if can avoid those areas, a very enjoyable experience..

  • Great game, bad food

    by L. on 1/4/20Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

It was a great game and there’s not a bad seat there. But the food and amenities in the stadium were lacking. They ran out of food pregame in certain concessions and it was mediocre at best.

  • Great Game and Facility

by Richie Rich on 1/4/20Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 3 out of 5

Really had a great time. The facility is really nice and laid out well. Parking is, well terrible and the best way in and out is use a ride share. I did the VIP experience which was okay but way overpriced.

  • Organization

by Mike on 1/4/20Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 2 out of 5

I’ve been to a few games here so I know where things are but this was the worst game from an operational standpoint. The biggest issue I saw were the lack of signs and organization. There was nothing that directed you around the stadium through the maze of fences to fan fest. There was zero organization at any of the tents from merchandise to credit merchants to the beer stand. Everything was a free for all and the only thing that caused was pushing and shoving, cussing and name-calling and made already tense fan bias worse. That’s exactly how fights start and creates a toxic non-family environment. Lastly, There were no straws anywhere except for the one random vendor serving lemonade and he burned through his box by the end of the first quarter. I have friends and family that are germ people and choose not to drink out of cans but when that’s the only option you give them, they’d just rather not partake and that again decreases the element of excitement. You can do better, you have done better. This was bad. Great game by both teams. Both fans were absolutely incredible in the stands.

Was very impressed with the security and the way the police kept everything moving smoothly getting in and out. Thank you Orange County and local police. Great job

The experience was amazing, as usual. Easy to find. Parking was great and close by. The pre-game events were also very enjoyable. The only issue we had was with the event staff. Although all were very pleasant, they were not very helpful when it came to directing us to our seats. We were misdirected by 4 different staff members. One sent us almost to field level. One to upper most level. One sent us in the wrong direction and finally the last one got us there. We missed the pregame in-stadium events roaming for our seats. Other than that, all was fantastic!

All was great except agent didnt ask what side,we were PSU fans stuck on the Kentucky side.Partly our fault being excited to get tickets. It might be a good courtesy to ask. Thanks

  • Not well orchestrated

by MindyB on 1/8/19Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 2 out of 5

This venue was not set up to handle the crowd for this year’s bowl game. The top tier had very little option for food and drink. Getting to and from the main floor took a bit of navigation as escalators and elevators were not operating and/or going in the direction needed. The food and beverage stations ran out of basics like soda and water. One food station on the main concourse stopped serving entirely because they ran out of trays - even handheld items like drinks. All in all, if you left your seat for any reason, you were disappointed.

  • Great game

    by r. k. on 1/7/19Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

I’m certainly not a “techie” and wasT real comfortable with the idea of a mobile ticket. As it turned out it couldn’t have been easier. The seats were even better than what they:looked like on the website. It was a great game and my team won. Thanks for a great experience.

  • Excellent atmosphere and relatively clean

by Dave Welsh on 1/6/19Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

Our group had an excellent experience for our first trip. Everything was relatively clean and accessible. Great job by the organizers and people who work for Camping Wprld Stadium. We would definitely come back.

  • Fantastic game!

by Criv on 1/5/19Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

The view from our seats was exactly as depicted on the website! We were very satisfied with our experience. Of note, this Camping World Stadium does not allow reentry...purchase the lower cost/higher quality food from the vendors outside the stadium prior to entry (outside food and drink was allowed to be brought into the stadium).

  • understaffed and poorly managed

by Disneydad Fan on 1/5/19Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 2 out of 5

Entry and security were fine. Once inside they had vendors with buckets selling beer on the main level. only 2-3 locations on each level selling food and drinks. only cans and plastic bottles. no fountain beverages or tap beer. on the 200 level average wait time for a drink was 15 minutes and average wait time for food was 30 mins. by half time, they were out of cold beer and sodas and only offered warm ones Even water was almost sold out by the 4th qtr. I wasted most of a quarter of the game waiting for overpriced warm beer and soda. Plus the stadium is poorly designed and provides little to no protection from the elements. As far as game experiences go, this was one of, if not the worst stadium I've ever been in. I would not choose to return, but if my team plays here, I guess I would have no choice. I would just plan to eat right before and not plan to purchase anything from inside.

  • Great Game Day

by Charlene on 1/5/19Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

Seats were what I expected for what I paid. The teams played a great game. Weather was beautiful. I love watching the Penn State band. Prices at the stands are normal, however, they need to be a little faster. You can stand through almost an entire quarter before you are done getting an order. Other than that, I would certainly go back to see another Citrus Bowl. It really doesn't matter who is playing. Its all good!

  • Parking and Uber

by Musiclover on 1/4/19Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 3 out of 5

The parking was very limited, so we ubered to the game (very expensive). The way back, was highway robbery and the Uber’s couldn’t find the main pick up spot and took FOREVER. They kept passing everyone by. Definitely need work on transportation for the game. Game was good.

  • 2019 Citrus Bowl Open Air Club

    by T. Y. on 1/4/19Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 3 out of 5

On the positive side the game was great and my seat was awesome. On the disappointing side, the Open Air Club was a big disappointment. They had barriers up that blocked the view of the field from the Club. On the Camping World Stadium website under Open Air Club they had pictures of outdoor tables where you could sit and watch the game. I found after I arrived that these tables were only accessible from the Center State Club. The concessions were extremely under staffed. There was only 1 open ordering station at concessions so there were very very long lines the entire game. Over all I was extremely disappointed in the reality compared to what they advertised on the website.

  • Fine

by Smitty on 1/4/19Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

We were pulled aside because a pursue was about 2 inches too big while other lines allowed bigger purses in. They made us put it in a locker truck that cost an extra $10 plus the inconvenience. We were lucky to think ahead and secure parking downtown. The shuttles provided were great. Over all it was a good experience.

  • Great experience ! Great Venue !

Stadium in a really sketchy neighborhood. Parking prices nearby were insane. Food was expensive and TERRIBLE. Bought food pregame and already out of napkins. Only positive was use of Geico garage and shuttle.
