Citrus Bowl History

The Citrus Bowl in Orlando is one of college football's signature events, a burst of Florida sunshine on New Year's Day. The game, traditionally played on January 1, usually pits an SEC team against a representative from the Big Ten.

The event was born in 1947 as the Tangerine Bowl, with the Catawba Indians beating the Maryville Scots, 31-6. The initial sponsors were members of a local Elks Lodge who each put up $100 to cover expenses. Proceeds went to the Harry Anna Children's Hospital, which is why the bowl would come to be known as the "Little Bowl with the Big Heart." The stadium, built in 1936 under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration, accommodated just 8,900 fans.

Today the stadium — now called Camping World Stadium — is a fully modern, 65,000-capacity facility, and the Citrus Bowl is a centerpiece of the bowl season. While it lacks the pageantry of the Rose Bowl on the other side of the country, the game is rich with the sport's history, both bad and good. The unbeaten 1955 Hillsdale College football team refused an invitation to the bowl after officials said the school's four black players would not be allowed to play. Likewise, University of Buffalo players in 1958 elected to skip the game because its two black players would have been kept off the field. But by 1966, the color line had been lifted, and Morgan State became the first historically black college to play in the bowl. The Bears went on to beat the West Chester Golden Rams, 14-6.

Other memorable games include the 1996 Citrus Bowl, in which fourth-ranked Tennessee beat fourth-ranked Ohio State, 20-14, and the 1969 edition, in which Toledo hung 56 points on Davidson, a bowl record that stands today.

  • Bowl experience

The show itself was wonderful. However, the food vendors inside of camping world stadium were ill prepared. They ran out of food and drinks before halftime.

We absolutely enjoyed our experience at the Citrus Bowl. Areas were well marked and staff helpful and friendly!

  • Great stadium but POOR concessions

by Bill on 1/4/19Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 3 out of 5

Enjoyed the game. Seats were great. Not a bad seat in stadium. But concessions were miserable. Went to concessions at half time and got back to seat with 3 minutes left in 3Q. Concession was out of bottled water, peanuts pretzels. Only food offered was chicken fingers and cheese fries. To top it off, while waiting in line got to watch NHL network hockey game!!! LOL. They couldn't figure out people might want to see the Kentucky- Penn State third quarter action they were missing while waiting in line???? What are these people thinking???

  • Concessions need upgrade

    by J. G. on 1/4/19Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 3 out of 5

Ran out of beer, bottled water, lemonade at main concession by 3rd quarter... staff overwhelmed and stressed at concession while security seemed over staffed.... seems that there are more concessions needed. The concessionaires that carry drinks around were just standing in a sea of people in the main concession walkway yelling that they had beer. I never saw a concessionaire walking the stair selling anything beer soda water in the stands...not one. Wait in lines for concessions the 3 times i waited were at the shortest 20 minutes. My daughter who has been to more stadiums that i have stated that the stadium seemed "basic".

Overall great first bowl experience (Cats won so that helped)! Transportation/parking options/free shuttle/traffic were all excellent and better than expected. Stadium and seating were also good. Only problem was the concessions were poorly managed at Campers World Stadium. It was a hot day and before halftime the upper level concessions (near 213) were out of almost all food (only wings were available) and NO cold drinks at all. Had to go down 6 levels to find anything cold. Poor business...at $5 a water/soda, could have made a lot more money if managed properly. 60k attended and this was known in advance...someone dropped the ball and hopefully will plan more thoroughly for the all star game in a few weeks.

  • Fabulous

by Diane on 1/4/19Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

The Camping World Stadium is fabulous. We had seats on the 20 yard line for the Citrus Bowl. The stadium has easy access to the highways and interstate. Fan Fest was a lot of fun.

  • Bucket List Achieved

    by D. B. on 1/4/19Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

Tickets were excellent for the price. My wheelchair seating was better than expected. Getting into the stadium was a little confusing regarding getting to the correct area for wheelchair security and ticket check, not well marked. Otherwise excellent experience.

  • Dissappointed

by mnew on 1/4/19Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 3 out of 5

The Citrus Bowl had great weather and was a nice stadium but the concessions ran out of cold water before half time. The concession stands were understaffed and had very long and slow moving lines. The day was hotter than expected and this became a real problem. Avoid the Citrus Bowl, it is a second rate bowl run just to profit from the tourists. They take no pride is doing a good job.

  • Great Atmosphere, Horrendous Concession Stands

    by Stellam53 on 1/4/19Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 1 out of 5

Thank goodness, the beer vendors were outside of the concession stands. They were the only ones who had any product. The concession stands were not stocked and we were forced to walk halfway around the stadium. HORRIBLE. I HOPE THE PRO BOWL IS BETTER PREPARED!!!!

  • My family and I had a great experience.

  • What an Amazing Experience of a Life Time

by DeltaYankee on 1/4/18Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

I am a wounded vet, and a Veterans Advocate, I had a teammate with Stage 4 cancer who has been a life long Notre Dame Fan. One of his bucket list items was to see ND play life long dream. From the beginning the ticketmaster agent helped us with accessible seating. When we arrived the Citrus Bowl Security assisted us through the cordons and out to our seats. It was great. I would encourage folks to down load your tickets to your phone before arriving several folks could not connect to their ticket and it was near impossible just before the game. The Folks at the accessible seating area were awesome. It was a trip of a lifetime and a great blessing

  • Great Event

    by TeamMe2 on 1/3/17Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

This event has gotten much better than it was in the past. The parking was good, getting into the event was much easier, no long lines, food vendors were quicker with service. All and all this was a great event. I will definitely attend the event again whether my team makes it or not. It was a great outing.

  • Awesome Time

by DaGram on 1/3/17Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

This is our second year in a row to attend the Citrus Bowl. It is awesome! Especially awesome when your team wins. I have read complaints about location, no sun screen allowed and no info prior to going to the stadium regarding things that are allowed and not allowed. I had no problem because I informed myself prior to the game. Don't know a thing about no sunscreen. Great job - awesome experience.
