Citrus Bowl History
The Citrus Bowl in Orlando is one of college football's signature events, a burst of Florida sunshine on New Year's Day. The game, traditionally played on January 1, usually pits an SEC team against a representative from the Big Ten.
The event was born in 1947 as the Tangerine Bowl, with the Catawba Indians beating the Maryville Scots, 31-6. The initial sponsors were members of a local Elks Lodge who each put up $100 to cover expenses. Proceeds went to the Harry Anna Children's Hospital, which is why the bowl would come to be known as the "Little Bowl with the Big Heart." The stadium, built in 1936 under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration, accommodated just 8,900 fans.
Today the stadium — now called Camping World Stadium — is a fully modern, 65,000-capacity facility, and the Citrus Bowl is a centerpiece of the bowl season. While it lacks the pageantry of the Rose Bowl on the other side of the country, the game is rich with the sport's history, both bad and good. The unbeaten 1955 Hillsdale College football team refused an invitation to the bowl after officials said the school's four black players would not be allowed to play. Likewise, University of Buffalo players in 1958 elected to skip the game because its two black players would have been kept off the field. But by 1966, the color line had been lifted, and Morgan State became the first historically black college to play in the bowl. The Bears went on to beat the West Chester Golden Rams, 14-6.
Other memorable games include the 1996 Citrus Bowl, in which fourth-ranked Tennessee beat fourth-ranked Ohio State, 20-14, and the 1969 edition, in which Toledo hung 56 points on Davidson, a bowl record that stands today.

THE GOOD: 1. Finally i can get cellphone service inside the stadium..... 2. game was a good match up......it was nice,,,,2 historically good football schools 3. maybe this game would be better if played at night? PRIME TIME! THE BAD: 1. i am not pleased with this logging in to show your ticket on a phone....mail me a dam ticket! 2. fcs could have done better with the ticket package for members...them sons of bitches wouldnt even allow us to buy tickets for the miami/florida game. 3. concessions too dam high!. 4. merchandise/souvenirs too dam high! 5. better halftime performance with real stars....like the superbowl...beyonce, Earth, wind, and fire, Madonna, Snoop dogg and many many others should have been performing. 6. get a richer sponsor and become part of the playoff system....Vrbo pockets obviously not deep enough...lol
Took my brother-in-law to his first live college game and he’s a bama fan and I’m a UofM fan so it was an awesome experience for both of us
First time I have used ticketmaster's electronic ticketing. Was very easy to use.
We had great seats and everything went without a fault.
love the new renovation. some vegan options for food would be nice
We had great seats and our team won. The indoor concessions were not well run and closed immediately after the game, which was not good.
Great and entertaining game. The food is far below par. Eat before you come. No craft beers is a negative. The bathroom situation is abysmal. Prepare to wait in the men’s restroom line for excessive amounts of time. Woman’s seemed to be fine. To sum it up foods is not good at all, beer selection stinks, and prepare to wait in line for the bathroom if you are a dude.
This was the first time my daughter and I took a road trip together. To be able to just show our phone tickets and continue with our fun helped make this an epic experience for both of us. Great value and a fun experience
If you have seats upstairs get there early because the seats are benches. When we arrived our 4 seats where only 3. Get food early. They start to run out before the second quarter ends. Food lines will move slow. I waited 30 minutes at halftime to get through the line. Camping World Stadium is a minor league stadium.
Incredible game and venue! Whole family had a great time!
A game at the camping world stadium is never uneventful. Having been to multiple football games there in the last couple years. Something is always bound to go wrong. This time, bathroom lines were long to the point that one would spend half of the third quarter WAITING to use a facility. In addition, almost all merchandise was sold out by halftime let alone the fact that concessions were running out of food by the third quarter (running out of hot dogs and hamburgers at one and all food at another). And to top it off, my wife wanted to enjoy a spiked seltzer while watching the game to which we had found out that they had been sold out since the first quarter. But don't worry, there is plenty of beer, so much so that you, no joke, could take 20 steps in any direction of the concourse and be in line for one of a multitude of beer vendors. All that said, the game atmosphere was fine but I won't even touch the cluster-(you know what) that is parking at the citrus bowl. If you can, ride-share there and try to ride-share home.
Weather was perfect. Entry into stadium was OK, didn't like having to go through the Fan Fest to get to our gate. Once inside the stadium, everything went smoothly. Fans were fun, hot dogs were tasty, and even though our seats were high up, had a fantastic view of the game and surrounding scenery. Enjoyed watching two storied programs play a good game into the second half.
Went to buy tickets right after the teams were announced and showed only first and second level seats. Good seats were pricey and only other ones were not great tickets near the end zone. There were no seats available for sale in the upper deck. Bought tickets I wasn't that happy with but had no upper deck choices. A few days later happened to be on the site and there were plenty of upper deck seats available and much closer to the 50 yard line for decent prices. WHY NOT PUT UPPER DECK SEATS FOR SALE AS SOON AS THE TEAMS ARE ANNOUNCED. GIVE THE FANS A CHOICE. RIDICICULOUS THAT THEY ARE ONLY PUT UP FOR SALE DAYS LATER.
Camping World Stadium was a very organized Stadium and was easy to access! However, they stopped selling beer at 4th quarter. Overall experience was great. O and ROLL TIDE ROLL
Tne Camping World Stadi is nice with plenty of clean restrooms. The staff was very accommodating to handicap patrons. Parking was an issue. The website needs better instruction on handcap parking and requirement for printed receipts. I realize this is a City of Orlando issue, but it is a hassle. Why isn't a digital copy acceptabe?
Had a great time at the vrbo citrus bowl, dealt with a Bama heckler o the Michigan side the entire game which reduced the enjoyment but over all I cannot complain. Good experience, next time I hope to enjoy the experience with Michigan fans.
It was an AMAZING experience that I got to share with my 15 yr old son!
Seats in the 200’s are metal stands which is ok, except no one bothers with sitting where they should and no ushers to assist . So few food stands you’ll miss half your event waiting in line if you’re hungry. So eat before you go. Won’t go back for any event.
Wonderful weather..stadium nice and clean but bama fans didn't make noise like michigan...until 5minutes to go and victory was theirs...closet fans
