About

About Charlotte Motor Speedway Events

Concord, North Carolina, is home to one of the most iconic tracks in stock car racing. The 1.5-mile quad-oval asphalt track at Charlotte Motor Speedway is located 12 miles northeast of Charlotte, and it has been hosting race events since opening in 1960. CMS is home to three annual NASCAR Cup events: the NASCAR All-Star Race and the Coca-Cola 600 in the spring, and the Bank of America Roval 400. In addition, CMS holds two NASCAR XFINITY Series races, the Alsco 300 and the Drive for the Cure 250, as well as the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series. The speedway has a current seating capacity of 85,000, and in addition to the main course, the grounds feature a drag strip, a road course (the "Roval"), and a quarter-mile dirt track. From 1999 to 2009, CMS was also known as Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Charlotte Motor Speedway History

In the late 1950s, NASCAR driver Curtis Turner and racing promoter Bruton Smith teamed up to build Charlotte Motor Speedway after both made attempts to build a modern racecourse just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. Joe Lee Johnson won the first race at the track, the World 600 on June 19, 1960. The first National 400 took place that fall and still takes place on the road course as the Bank of America Roval 400. In 1976 at Charlotte, Janet Guthrie became the first female competitor in a NASCAR Cup superspeedway race, finishing 15th in the World 500. In 1985, the inaugural The Winston took place, eventually evolving into the modern NASCAR All-Star Race.

Forty condominiums were built at CMS in 1984, making it the first sports facility in the United States to include this feature. A dozen additional condos were built in 1991, and lights were installed on the track the following year, making Charlotte Motor Speedway the first major course to allow for night races. The 2019 NASCAR Cup season was especially notable for CMS, with Kyle Larson taking the NASCAR All-Star Race, Martin Truex Jr. winning the Coca-Cola 600, and Chase Elliott claiming victory in the Bank of America Roval 400.

    Wonderful race experience

by C. on 10/2/19Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

The Roval is not your normal Nascar race. I was really entertained the whole time. As soon as the cars passed us on the track we then looked to our right and they were coming around the other direction and not just going around and around. We really enjoyed it

    Roval Nascar Race

by Cattycaro on 10/2/19Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

It was a very hot day until about an hour into the race when the weather became overcast. Our seats were just passed the start/finish and line before turn 1. A lot of the action happened on the track where we could see what was going on. As the race went on, the excitement built as this was an elimination race. Charlotte Motor Speedway really has it figured out: getting into and out of track; from parking to track and back. Everything was so smooth and easy. We have been to several other tracks, and this was the most pleasant experience from start to finish!

Great Race but tickets not where map indicated

by DanUKBand on 10/2/19Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

I chose our seats for the race based on the track map on the website. However, when we got to the track and to our selected seats, we were 4 whole sections away from where we thought we would be...again, based on the map where we did our seat selection. We had a great time. It would have been better 4 sections down. And yes, I know that we likely could have moved as it was nowhere near a sellout. Just putting this feedback so CMS and Ticketmaster can fix their map for next year.

This race did not disappoint. The facility was beautiful. Easy to get in and out. The Roval is a great race and Nascar should keep it forever!

    Fantastic

by Shelie2000 on 10/2/19Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

What a great race track, 1st time in Charlotte for a race we knew we had to come see this race. Only real complaint was exiting the parking lots, it was a zoo and took well over a hour just to get out of our lot.

    Disappointing for Charlotte

by Race fan on 10/1/19Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

This is more about Saturday's race than Sunday's. Parking options were terrible. You were pretty much forced out to the back pasture for an event with low attendance. Tickets were insanely overpriced for what amounts to a minor league race. We got there around 10:30-10:45, just a few minutes before practice started, and none of the merchandise trailers or Racing Electronics trailers were open. Despite the upper levels barely even half full, they had ushers checking for wristbands up until the end. However, on Sunday when we were in the upper deck, nothing was checked at all and we had people in our seats when we sat down just before the race started.

    Great time had by all

by H. on 8/21/19Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

We enjoyed seeing the monster trucks and the school buses race. The seats were in a good location to see the whole show. What we didn't like was the fact that the only drink lines were there to serve beer and wine at a kid's back to school bash. We had to stand 2 lines to buy the drinks that we wanted. Would be nice to see it more kid friendly.

    Really good show

    by E. H. on 8/20/19Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

This show was great! I’ve seen Monster Trucks in an arena but this was WAY better! They had space to actually race each other.

    Not the best

by J. Collins on 8/20/19Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

This was our familys 4th year. We usually enjoy it and have a great time but this year we spent so much time in LINES! We bought advance tickets for the ride BUT the ones who bought at the gate was abke to go ahead! They should had to wait in line too so maybe the ones who bought in advance could have gotten through the line quicker! Then I spent along time in the food truck line ao my family could enjoy the show. 1 more thing I dont know how the people decide what section they want to throw to but they only came to pur section 1 time and threw one item when other sections got more attention. My boys were quite disappointed.

    Great Event!

    by S. P. on 8/20/19Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

This venue is great for this type of event. I deducted one star because with the event being in the evening it is a late night for the littles. But well worth it and we will go again!

    Enjoyed show

by gk on 8/20/19Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

I purchased a monster truck ride for my grandson. We waited in line for well over an hour and missed much of the show. The line was not well organized and very confusing. Need to find a better way to handle this.

Back-to-School Monster Truck Bash, Charlotte NC

by Beth on 8/20/19Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

My husband and I took our son and grandson (6 years old) to the Monster Truck Bash in Charlotte and the experience for our family was very good. My grandson loved, loved, loved, the monster trucks and his laughing and smiling throughout the program was well worth the cost. The monster truck ride was super cool for my grandson but he had to wait well over an hour to get on the ride. That is just too long to wait and we will not experience that in the future. The only downside we experienced were the families in front of us. The group of children (between 5-7) were sitting on the back of the chairs and it made it difficult for my grandson to see. We asked one of the parents, several times, for the children to either sit in their seat or stand at their row (not on the seat). It well a couple of times but after that, the parent chose to disregard the children and let them do what they wanted. The children were too young to attend and were out of control. Overall, I would still recommend this event to any parent/grandparent that has grade school children. they will have a blast!
