About Charlotte Motor Speedway Events

Concord, North Carolina, is home to one of the most iconic tracks in stock car racing. The 1.5-mile quad-oval asphalt track at Charlotte Motor Speedway is located 12 miles northeast of Charlotte, and it has been hosting race events since opening in 1960. CMS is home to three annual NASCAR Cup events: the NASCAR All-Star Race and the Coca-Cola 600 in the spring, and the Bank of America Roval 400. In addition, CMS holds two NASCAR XFINITY Series races, the Alsco 300 and the Drive for the Cure 250, as well as the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series. The speedway has a current seating capacity of 85,000, and in addition to the main course, the grounds feature a drag strip, a road course (the "Roval"), and a quarter-mile dirt track. From 1999 to 2009, CMS was also known as Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Charlotte Motor Speedway History

In the late 1950s, NASCAR driver Curtis Turner and racing promoter Bruton Smith teamed up to build Charlotte Motor Speedway after both made attempts to build a modern racecourse just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. Joe Lee Johnson won the first race at the track, the World 600 on June 19, 1960. The first National 400 took place that fall and still takes place on the road course as the Bank of America Roval 400. In 1976 at Charlotte, Janet Guthrie became the first female competitor in a NASCAR Cup superspeedway race, finishing 15th in the World 500. In 1985, the inaugural The Winston took place, eventually evolving into the modern NASCAR All-Star Race.

Forty condominiums were built at CMS in 1984, making it the first sports facility in the United States to include this feature. A dozen additional condos were built in 1991, and lights were installed on the track the following year, making Charlotte Motor Speedway the first major course to allow for night races. The 2019 NASCAR Cup season was especially notable for CMS, with Kyle Larson taking the NASCAR All-Star Race, Martin Truex Jr. winning the Coca-Cola 600, and Chase Elliott claiming victory in the Bank of America Roval 400.

We never get tired of the all-star race

by 864legend on 7/11/09Lowe's Motor Speedway - Concord

We go every year to this race because we have small kids that want to go but cant make it through a four hour race without driving me crazy. Perfect for a first time race experience or if you love seeing cars torn up because there are no points involved.

    Incredible!!

by freeburd99 on 7/11/09Lowe's Motor Speedway - Concord

The All-Star race was amazing! The whole day was awesome, with the vendors and pre-race concert, and you can't forget the burnout contest. However, the race was definitely the highlight. By far one of the most exciting races I have seen in person. I would definitely recommend this race to anyone!

    2009 Sprint All Star Race

by Smoke843 on 7/11/09Lowe's Motor Speedway - Concord

We had a great time. We sat in turn 4 on the 5th row. I even took my 5 year old. We had such a great time and especially with the shootout on the final 10 laps. I will be going for years to come. Oh but make sure you bring in your own food. 21 bucks for a medium pizza is unreal.

I was really pleased with how everything went. We had a great time and enjoyed getting to sit right in front of my favorite drivers pit. I hope to go to the Bank of America race in October.

    All-Star Race was great fun!

by MyGoBrown on 7/11/09Lowe's Motor Speedway - Concord

The All-Star Race at Lowe's Motor Speedway on Saturday, May 16, 2009 was great! It was our first time to see the All-Star Race. And as Jeff Gordon Fans we loved it until right at the end when he wrecked. The weather, the qualifying race, all of the events, and the All-Star Race were all Great Fun!! (unlike the following weekend at Lowe's where the Coca-Cola 600 was rained out two days in a row!!!)

    Tony Stewart Won!

by Mistrikai on 7/11/09Lowe's Motor Speedway - Concord

We had a great time at the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race. The weather was a little "iffy", and we did get some sprinkles, but it was a fun time. We had the cheap seats on turn 2,(90 steps up), but we could see everything from them. My only complaint is that the jumbotron was not facing our section and we couldn't see some things happening on the other side. We got to spend time out front and won some cool prizes including t-shirts from Speed and Toyota Racing. We bought programs and t-shirts also, so we are outfitted for future races! The highlight of the night came at the end when my driver, Tony Stewart won it! His first win as owner/driver of Stewart-Hass racing and I was there to see it, live and in person!

    All Star Race 09

by Hawaii29322 on 7/11/09Lowe's Motor Speedway - Concord

As a Nascar fan, going to any race is the ultimate experience but races at Lowes Motorspeedway are ones that I would recommend to go anyone to see. The All Star is the perfect race for someone new to the Nascar scene to get his/her feet wet, even though it is shorter than most races it's still action packed.

All Star Race Exciting as Always

by K8NK8LN on 7/11/09Lowe's Motor Speedway - Concord

Wow-what an event. This is a must-see for any Nascar Fan, and a should see for anyone that thinks Nascar is just cars going around in circles. Due to the economy, we chose the cheapest seats at Lowes Motor Speedway (turn 2), and they turned out to be the best seats ever. We were almost sitting on top of the track and looking right down on the cars. And, we could still see the whole track. As always, Nascar fans are the best. Whether their favorite driver is the same as yours, or their arch rivals, there is always good banter to be had.

The Srint Cup Allstar race was awsome.

by johnson1960 on 7/11/09Lowe's Motor Speedway - Concord

This was my first Nascar race and it was a blast. The sound of those engines when they went by us was like music to my ears.

    What a blast!

by SmokeFan on 7/11/09Lowe's Motor Speedway - Concord

My first trip to Lowes and the ALLSTAR race, it will not be my last. Everyone had a BLAST! Brought along some family members for their first NASCAR experience and now they are hooked. The Family Pack in the Diamond Tower was a great deal and the seats were so much better than I could have imagined! Thanks Ticketmaster for the quick and easy ticket sales transaction and delivery. Looking forward to next year's ALL STAR race at Lowes.

    Nascar Allstar Race May 16,2009

by ShawnDant on 7/11/09Lowe's Motor Speedway - Concord

I had a great time at this race, My Fiance and myself had Garage Hot Passes, and Suite Passes for the race, I bought the additional ticket's from Ticketmaster for my stepkid's. We had a blast! We got pictures of us with Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch, Kenny Wallace, Jimmy Spencer, etc.. We even got to go up onto the roof of the speedway to watch the race with some of the Red Bull Team Spotter's. It was unbelievable! We were standing right beside Tony Stewart after he won his first race, with his own team! History was made, and we were there!
