Charlotte Hornets History

The original Charlotte Hornets franchise joined the NBA in 1988 and, thanks to players such as Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and Kendall Gill (and later, Glen Rice, Anthony Mason and Jamal Mashburn), enjoyed substantial success in the 1990s, starting with the 1992–93 season. Owner George Shinn moved the franchise to New Orleans in 2002.

But the NBA returned to Charlotte for the 2004–05 season with the expansion Bobcats, led by owner Robert L. Johnson, the first African-American majority owner of a team in one of the four major sports. In 2010, Michael Jordan took over majority ownership of the franchise, and in 2014, Jordan's team re-adopted the Charlotte Hornets name after the previous New Orleans Hornets became the Pelicans.

During the 2017–18 season, four-time All-Star Kemba Walker became Charlotte's all-time leading scorer, surpassing original Hornet Dell Curry.

  • So much fun

by Msutton on 10/12/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

Can’t wait to go to another Purple & Teal day. We had so much fun, great family event with a chance to sit close and see the players in a fun environment.

  • Hornets Purple and Teal Day

by LaurenC on 10/12/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 3 out of 5

The overall experience was nice for kids/families to be able to experience the presence of the hornets players up close and being FREE is a huge advantage to families that can’t afford regular season games. My only complaint is that the players could’ve at least given the kids high fives coming in and out of the tunnel or made time to do some autographs for them. This event was similar to a “fan fest”, and many of these kids won’t have an opportunity to see them again on this level.

  • PURPLE and Teal day

    by Mario j on 10/12/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 1 out of 5

The purple and teal day was so terrible!! The line outside wait was longer than the event itself. The hornets were so cheap they couldn't even give tee shirts to everyone that attended.

  • Poor

by Gus on 10/12/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 1 out of 5

No game, worts compare to last year, no t-shirt no souvenir.

  • Bad timing

by Troi on 10/12/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 1 out of 5

Didn’t even make it into the event. The time stated 1pm online but apparently it started at 12pm and ended at 2pm. There was no end time online and they didn’t let anyone else into the event after 1:50. A lot of disappointed kids and family’s

  • Fun event, parking attendants not as much fun

by Nicole on 10/12/22Greensboro Coliseum Complex - GreensboroRating: 4 out of 5

The good: game was pretty fun! Ushers were helpful. Seats were easy enough to find. Game was good. The bad: Parking attendants we're preoccupied with ANYTHING other than directing cars. We essentially had to figure out where to park ourselves. Concession lines were LOOOOONG. Missed 1/3 of the game getting popcorn and a drink.

  • More NBA!!

by CPatt on 10/11/22Greensboro Coliseum Complex - GreensboroRating: 5 out of 5

We had a great time at the game. The crowd was hype and the game was very entertaining. I wish Greensboro could get more NBA games in our area.

Great view. Organized event. Clean restrooms. Nice staff.

  • Hornets/Celtics

by DSmith on 10/11/22Greensboro Coliseum Complex - GreensboroRating: 3 out of 5

Venue was convenient to home but HORRIBLE traffic getting into parking lot. Took forever! Once inside, food vendor lines were very very long and after waiting an entire quarter for food, they “ran out of bread” for burgers and hotdogs. Waste of time. The game itself was great with great seating and views.

Enjoyed the game, but had a terrible time trying to rest password. Was able to view tickets for weeks and then couldn't get access days before!

  • Meh

by Bob on 10/10/22Greensboro Coliseum Complex - GreensboroRating: 2 out of 5

The game was good, the athletes were exceptional and the vendors were very nice. Where the Greensboro Coliseum FAILED was in exchange for $400 of my money they provided me with 2 floor seats that were more child appropriate than anything close to something able to even somewhat accommodate a full grown adult. This was a professional basketball game. The average fan of professional basketball is more often a former player at some level and usually a taller person (not all but many). Both my daughter and myself are well over 6 feet tall. The seats were a perfect fit for a child or young adult of 5’6” tall and under 150 lbs. That is not us nor was it anything like the majority of adults sitting near us. Everyone looked very uncomfortable (except for children and young/small adults). It was an excruciatingly painful 3 hours due to our extremely cramped, uncomfortable child sized seats being the smallest folding chairs I personally have ever seen. I’ll not repeat this $400 mistake with it’s additional $20 parking tab. Greedy Greensboro Coliseum gets 2 generous stars for the overpriced, uncomfortable seats.

  • Hornets Celtics preseason

by Ace on 10/10/22Greensboro Coliseum Complex - GreensboroRating: 3 out of 5

I was more impressed with the Celtics players demonstrating more fan engagement. Lamelo had the least amount of engagement which was very disappointing. Jayson Tatum proved to be more of a professional even though he didn’t play. . Thanks Tatum for appreciating the fans…

  • Nightmare Parking

by Chief Wahoo on 10/10/22Greensboro Coliseum Complex - GreensboroRating: 3 out of 5

Parking was awful. Took an hour missed 1st quarter of game. Once inside nice venew, but gotta find a better way to get people inside

  • Bad traffic management

by JW on 10/10/22Greensboro Coliseum Complex - GreensboroRating: 2 out of 5

Terrible traffic management and no prepaid parking meant that we didn’t arrive until the end of the first quarter. The arena is very dated and the seating is really tight. Would not go to another game at Greensboro Coliseum.

  • Hornets in the Boro

    by Louster17 on 10/10/22Greensboro Coliseum Complex - GreensboroRating: 5 out of 5

Took my son to the Hornets Pre-Season game against the Celtics and we had a blast! Love the idea of bringing the team out of market for a game only wish they would do it more often,

  • Celtics pride

by Kriminal Krime on 10/10/22Greensboro Coliseum Complex - GreensboroRating: 4 out of 5

MY boston celtics gave the charlotte hornets a beating despite being down double digits in the first half oft he game.My boston celtics turned up the defense being the best defensive team last season and Eastern conference champions for 2022 season and we ran them down and end up winning the game although it was just a pre-season game the greensboro crowd was electric.MY friend i took with me was her first experience looking at NBA players live.I really enjoyed myself and hope more games are scheduled in this area. GO celtics been a fan since i was in the 5th grade in 1977. I even ran into cedric "CORNBREAD" Maxwell a celtic great in the 80's when Larry bird, robert parish, danny ainge ,dennis johnson ruled the nba and won 3 championships in the 80's over our arch rival the los angeles Lakers.I hope to be part of a game in the future at the greensboro complex or at charlotte .We had fun!!!!!!!!!!
