Charlotte Hornets History

The original Charlotte Hornets franchise joined the NBA in 1988 and, thanks to players such as Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and Kendall Gill (and later, Glen Rice, Anthony Mason and Jamal Mashburn), enjoyed substantial success in the 1990s, starting with the 1992–93 season. Owner George Shinn moved the franchise to New Orleans in 2002.

But the NBA returned to Charlotte for the 2004–05 season with the expansion Bobcats, led by owner Robert L. Johnson, the first African-American majority owner of a team in one of the four major sports. In 2010, Michael Jordan took over majority ownership of the franchise, and in 2014, Jordan's team re-adopted the Charlotte Hornets name after the previous New Orleans Hornets became the Pelicans.

During the 2017–18 season, four-time All-Star Kemba Walker became Charlotte's all-time leading scorer, surpassing original Hornet Dell Curry.

  • glad they came to greensboro!

    by J. R. on 10/10/22Greensboro Coliseum Complex - GreensboroRating: 4 out of 5

Game was good, but vendors were really slow so lines were long and taking forever. Missed almost the whole third quarter standing in line to get popcorn and pretzels, and there were 4 attendants but only 2 ladies doing all the work. Most all lines were like this.

  • Super Fun

The game was great! It was cool that the game was held in the town with Charlotte’s G League Team.

I currently live in Greensboro NC, im from St. Louis Mo, so to get pictures with Jason Tatum my hometown boy was awesome, my kids are L. Ball fans and got no pics with him but that was their first NBA experience whatsoever it was a great time, thanks again!!

  • Parking

    by HornetsFan2022 on 10/10/22Greensboro Coliseum Complex - GreensboroRating: 2 out of 5

Arrived 20 minutes early and sat in traffic on Coliseum Blvd for over an hour and a half waiting to get in the parking lot. Several cars popped the curb and parked in the lot illegally because the wait was so long. After missing the entire first half, parking was $20. The parking policy or structure should be revisited to either encourage paying in advance, or adding into the cost of a ticket so there’s not such a bottleneck with taking payment on site before parking (assuming we’ll continue to pay to park in the lot).

  • Awful venue

by NC Bball Fan on 10/10/22Greensboro Coliseum Complex - GreensboroRating: 1 out of 5

The traffic leading to the Greensboro Colosseum was insane. We left with more than enough time to get there, and we arrived at half time. The food at the venue was sub par - the woman making the smoothies couldn’t get off of her cell phone while making them. Security was laughable.

  • Great event, smooth admission!

Was really nice game and expirence. Was a preseason game but really good game.

  • Can it get any worse?

by Travlers on 10/10/22Greensboro Coliseum Complex - GreensboroRating: 3 out of 5

We were in a long line of traffic to get in to park. The seats would have been ok if they weren't kicked on from the back. Had trouble getting in the seats with our daughter who is disabled. There were no more handicap seats to buy. I see why, because there people in those areas that could have sat some where else. There should be a area to put in your handicap sign number with 2 guest ( parents or guardian) to sit there.

  • Cute seats

Only problem is the parking garage, we took 30 min to get in

  • Greensboro Pre Season

by CSG on 10/10/22Greensboro Coliseum Complex - GreensboroRating: 1 out of 5

Parking was horrid! Don't take credit cards for payments if you don't have the infrastructure to do so. I could have driven from Greensboro to Charlotte and parked and walked into the game faster than parking in Greensboro. If you gave us free tickets to go to Greensboro again, I would say no thank you and pay for tickets in Charlotte.

  • The Greensboro Coliseum is horrible

by Sam V on 10/10/22Greensboro Coliseum Complex - GreensboroRating: 2 out of 5

The venue was terrible. Traffic and paying for parking took forever - there’s gotta be a more efficient way to get people in. I’ve been to bigger venues that didn’t take so long. We miss the whole first quarter sitting in line waiting to get in. The food options inside are meh but also took forever. We went for a basketball and waited in line for the entire 3rd quarter for our food. So basically I spent more time waiting for something at this place than watching the game. I am never going to the Greensboro Coliseum again.

  • Great time at the coliseum

  • Pre season game

by Claretslad on 10/8/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 4 out of 5

We were in Charlotte from England, this was our second Hornets game after enjoying it the first time. The arena is great, brilliant view from block 209. The arena was less than half full of spectators which reduced the overall atmosphere, a shame the ticket prices aren’t reduced more which I’m sure would help attract more people. Friendly staff and we enjoyed the game. I’m sure we’ll be back!
