Charlotte Hornets History

The original Charlotte Hornets franchise joined the NBA in 1988 and, thanks to players such as Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and Kendall Gill (and later, Glen Rice, Anthony Mason and Jamal Mashburn), enjoyed substantial success in the 1990s, starting with the 1992–93 season. Owner George Shinn moved the franchise to New Orleans in 2002.

But the NBA returned to Charlotte for the 2004–05 season with the expansion Bobcats, led by owner Robert L. Johnson, the first African-American majority owner of a team in one of the four major sports. In 2010, Michael Jordan took over majority ownership of the franchise, and in 2014, Jordan's team re-adopted the Charlotte Hornets name after the previous New Orleans Hornets became the Pelicans.

During the 2017–18 season, four-time All-Star Kemba Walker became Charlotte's all-time leading scorer, surpassing original Hornet Dell Curry.

  • Awesome Game!

    by C.E. on 11/1/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

Had a great time at the Hornets vs Golden State game. Staff was friendly, well organized, loved the energy. I wish there were more food places to choose from. I plan on attending a few other home games.

  • Game Day

by Deborah on 11/1/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 3 out of 5

I am an older women first time attending a live sports event, I was so excited to attend a basketball event for I am a avid fan of the sport, overall I was not disappointed, however I was in the nose bled section of the Arena in which I paid just as your other quest, which felt as if I was not part of the action because when prizes an games were been given an played those sections of the Arena are excluded, also I was a little annoyed at the background music that was been played the entire game an watching game in the dark was a bit of a surprise I was sitting in section 203. The final an last thing I will say is that the cost of your food an beverages was extremely over priced, felt sorry for families with children trying to afford to purchase food items an treats. Me personally I purchased nothing after noting you asking $13 for a glass of beer, not because I couldn’t it was just point of me feeling like you all Gouging your Patriots, when you already have paid a Gracious plenty to attend the game, “Do Better”

  • Fun and Engaging

by RL on 10/26/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

First time attending Purple & Teal day and it won't be the last. It was neat seeing the Charlotte Hornets Players act silly and engage with fans. Fly Ty and Jocinda also kept the crowd going. The games were creative and we got to learn a bit about the players.

  • This game was my first ever visit to the Spectrum Center.

    by N. SH on 10/24/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first ever time to visit the Spectrum Center, I had with me two young ladies who were from out of the country. For one of them it was a life dream to see an NBA live game. I was somewhat nervous to drive in Uptown but the parking was not bad at all. The game and all the extra excitements were amazing. The only minor issue was the purchase of a water bottle. I hade to type my e-mail address, my phone number, my SS number (not really) and I don't remember what else, but that was a long process for just one bottle of water. Everything was VERY enjoyable. I will definitely go to more games, with or without guests...

  • Great⭐️

by Gina on 10/24/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

I have been to 2 Hornet games at the Spectrum Center and both have been great! Parking is convenient, although a bit pricey. Everyone goes through security and are checked appropriately and efficiently. There is plenty of staff to direct those who need help. Facility is very clean with plenty of concessions! Game was great!

In town from Louisville for the Charlotte Speedway and seen there was a scrimmage. So glad we went, it was a great enjoyable experience

  • I had no problems at all

by Zee on 10/13/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

Everything was easy as 123. The entire process was short simple sweet and to the point. No errors or issues and enjoyed the event. Overall amazing experience

  • It’s was awesome!

by Hornets on 10/13/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

It was my sons first time seeing a NBA team. He absolutely loved it! I can’t wait to take him to a game for his birthday next month!

  • Purple and Teal = Waste of Time

by Nickname on 10/12/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 1 out of 5

The Hornets broadly marketed this event and it was a failure. There were only 2 entrances open. By the time we waited in line for an hour the event was over. Start time was 1pm and the event ended at 2pm. Why waste people’s time? Make it worth while for the fans, especially the ones with young kids.

  • Free But Limited

    by Asia R. on 10/12/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 2 out of 5

Event did not last as long as expected. The activities were limited. Great to see the players for free but not much entertainment otherwise.

  • Waste of time

by Ali on 10/12/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 1 out of 5

People stood in line longer than the event lasted. My friend went to get popcorn and drinks, paid for food then waited over 30 min to get the food. She didn't even get the food until the event was OVER! We literally walked out of the arena with 2 tubs of popcorn and a drink with no option for a refund. I can't believe they would have people come out with their kids pay for parking, & stand in line for something to last an hour(and you only get the full hour if you were one of the first in line an hour or more beforehand. The team didn't scrimmage... it was a waste. We thoroughly enjoyed the prior years when this event took place and have left with pictures and autographs but this year the vibe was terrible. Hornets have not been good for several years now and should be doing any and everything to get their fan base up.

  • Its was Great time

    by ajy898 on 10/12/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

I have Great Time there and I cant wait come back thank you

  • Everyone was Nice But

by Duey on 10/12/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 2 out of 5

Everyone was nice but the event could have been a little longer. Did not know it was only an hr. long. Many people were in line to get something to eat and missed a lot of the event because the lines were so long. We ended up getting out of line and leaving arena. I was also disappointed because we saw hundreds of people with Charlotte hornets basketballs and we could not get one.

  • Purple & teal day at the hive !

by Jess on 10/12/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 1 out of 5

I was a little upset. The event ended earlier than it was suppose to.

  • Fun time

by Allen on 10/12/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 4 out of 5

It was a wonderful fun event but it was shorter then last time.

  • Long Lines

by Hornets Fan on 10/12/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 1 out of 5

The line outside were so long and access through security took so long that when we were finally inside there was only 5 min left. $20 for parking with free entrance was not worth it. I will not go again even if they make it free,

  • Wasn't able to get in.

by Jam on 10/12/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 2 out of 5

The event was cut short and 100's of fan wasn't able to enjoy the experience of a Hornets fan. Kids crying and parents mad.

  • Horrible

by Amber on 10/12/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 1 out of 5

All doors were not utilized to keep the gates flowing upon entry. Tickets also noted event was from 1pm to 4pm. Event ended at 2pm. My kid hated it. If this was the equivalent of the panthers fan fest you failed.
