Charlotte Hornets History

The original Charlotte Hornets franchise joined the NBA in 1988 and, thanks to players such as Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and Kendall Gill (and later, Glen Rice, Anthony Mason and Jamal Mashburn), enjoyed substantial success in the 1990s, starting with the 1992–93 season. Owner George Shinn moved the franchise to New Orleans in 2002.

But the NBA returned to Charlotte for the 2004–05 season with the expansion Bobcats, led by owner Robert L. Johnson, the first African-American majority owner of a team in one of the four major sports. In 2010, Michael Jordan took over majority ownership of the franchise, and in 2014, Jordan's team re-adopted the Charlotte Hornets name after the previous New Orleans Hornets became the Pelicans.

During the 2017–18 season, four-time All-Star Kemba Walker became Charlotte's all-time leading scorer, surpassing original Hornet Dell Curry.

  • Sitting on the moon

by BK on 12/19/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 3 out of 5

The Ticketmaster part of this excursion was the best part. Using the app was very easy and efficient. Receiving, transferring and pulling up the tickets at the gate was as simple as it could be. I would highly suggest paying the extra money to sit in the lower portion of the arena. I was only 6 rows up in the 2nd level (section 208) and it felt like I was looking straight down from the moon. It was hard to make out the player’s number unless you were watching the jumbo screen…and I could watch it on television at home. Overall it was a fun getaway for my family. We stayed at the hotel across the street, so no need to drive and try to find parking. Better seats would have made this 5*’s.

  • Charlotte vs. Clippers

by Mo on 12/8/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

My husband loves Kawhi Leonard. We had just made it to Charlotte without knowing that the Hornets were playing the Clips. It was ordained for us to be at the game because our hotel room was right across from the stadium. To see the smile on my husband's face to be at that game was special. Thank you ticketmaster because we had amazing seats at the last minute.

  • fun night

by Adam on 12/8/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

normally my wife and daughter are less excited about the Hornets but this was a great experience and a close game. The seats were better than normal and the dining was great.

  • Bad experience, rest night for most players.

by Clint on 12/6/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 1 out of 5

I know this happens, but most of the good players on each team rested the night we went and the Bucks best player sat with a sore knee. I just hate paying so much money to see the middle or end of the lineup play most the game. My son favorite player is Giannis and has been looking forward for months to see him play.

  • Glorified Scrimage

by Stan on 12/6/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 1 out of 5

I was sorely disappointed. Paid a mint for good seats and none of the big names played. They all were on the bench in street clothes and none of them were hurt. I will never pay to see another NBA game.

  • Good experience but MJ needs to step it up

by Sam on 11/28/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 4 out of 5

Venue was overall nice and clean, team store has great selection of apparel, and the staff throughout the arena were friendly and welcoming. BUT we’ve been to 9 other arenas now, and this one by far had the worst sound system, audio, and entertainment. Timeouts, breaks, etc lacked fan engagement, especially catering to kids.

  • First NBA Game

    by A. King on 11/28/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first ever NBA Game, and it was epic! I stayed in contact with your staff member Alison who answered all of my questions without hesitation. Our seating attendant ( M------ forgot name ) was more than courteous, she was also helpful with other details about the arena. My husband and I can't wait to go back and see another game. Hornets WON! Bzzzzzzzzz!

  • Outstanding Game

by Linwood on 11/28/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 3 out of 5

It was a great game and glad I got to attend. I'll make sure to sit in that section again. My only issue is, having to do everything with your phone SUCKS. I know for the younger folk, that's can't make a move without there phone, that's there way of life. But forces the rest of us to do the day, if a big PAIN IN THE REAR. I understand the NO Cash thing, but not having a ticket in hand if you want one limits more people then you know for going to game. I shouldn't have to have a phone or use my phone in order to enjoy sports and other events.

  • Black Friday Game

by Bran on 11/28/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

I attended the game the day after Thanksgiving. The game was fun and exciting. The crowd loved the game and energy was through the roof. The ticket line moved quickly and I did not have issues getting into the arena. However, upon arrival, someone was sitting in my seat and I had to ask them to move. It was a family of 5 and they were sitting in random seats in area 222. Other fans arrived and had to ask the family of 5 to move out of their seats. I wish there was more control over the seating areas and people sitting in their right seats. Other than that, the game and my experience was great. The ticket prices are reasonable but their should be an incentive to pay a lower price for better seats once you purchase so many tickets in the year. I would like to enjoy the game from a lower seat but the cost and resell cost are ridiculous.

  • Enjoyable experience at

by Gene on 11/8/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

Great seats with good view of the basketball floor in section 109, row Q. No one behind me, which I preferred. Staff group was helpful and professional.

  • NBA ACTION ALWAYS FANTASTIC!

by Droclov on 11/8/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

We enjoyed ourselves at the game. The atmosphere was electric and the game was great! The food was delicious as well.

  • Hornets vs Warriors

by NicWest on 11/2/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

Great game with great atmosphere. Ticketmaster made it easy and fast to go and get in the stadium without hassle.

  • Awful seats for $110+

by DangerChan on 11/1/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 2 out of 5

Totally not what I expected and not match what 360 view shown on Ticketmaster and TickPick website. Save your money from buying anything in those upper section (even center court like section 209) from row Q and on are way too far. Can’t see the game well at all. Ticketmaster has a lot of work to do on educating buyers on what type of view people are paying for.

  • I love the game basketball is my game

by Nigel on 11/1/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

I just love to see and play basketball.. that’s what I’m going to grow up and be a basketball player

  • Warriors/Hornets

by CD on 11/1/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

Game was awesome. Seats were awesome. Entire experience was just awesome.

  • Not great

by Sarah on 11/1/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 1 out of 5

Couldn’t sit in the seats I paid for due to a large gentleman sitting in the seats next to us was taking up one of our seats. We were told our only option was to purchase more tickets in a different section. Won’t purchase anything else at this venue.

  • FUN Hornets Game

    by B-ball on 11/1/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

The Hornets vs Golden State Warriors game was so much fun, so exciting, and resulted in a big win. The team was engaged and playing hard. The arena was sold out with super fans. The staff was friendly and helpful, the Honeybees and others kept things going, the food & drink were very accessible. Everyone left with a smile on their face. I look forward to my next Hornets game.
