Charlotte Hornets History

The original Charlotte Hornets franchise joined the NBA in 1988 and, thanks to players such as Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and Kendall Gill (and later, Glen Rice, Anthony Mason and Jamal Mashburn), enjoyed substantial success in the 1990s, starting with the 1992–93 season. Owner George Shinn moved the franchise to New Orleans in 2002.

But the NBA returned to Charlotte for the 2004–05 season with the expansion Bobcats, led by owner Robert L. Johnson, the first African-American majority owner of a team in one of the four major sports. In 2010, Michael Jordan took over majority ownership of the franchise, and in 2014, Jordan's team re-adopted the Charlotte Hornets name after the previous New Orleans Hornets became the Pelicans.

During the 2017–18 season, four-time All-Star Kemba Walker became Charlotte's all-time leading scorer, surpassing original Hornet Dell Curry.

  • Great Experience

Everything was top shelf. I was called the day before and asked if i needed any information. Everyone was helpful. Everyone was nice and friendly.

  • 1st in person game

by Trish on 1/17/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

I loved the experience. Hubby is all Celtics, but I love the Hornets. Win or lose they are my team. LaMelo makes the game so exciting. They haven't had many games with a full roster and they might be All Stars yet, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the games.

  • Great time.

by Wang on 1/17/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

Visit spectrum Center in Charlotte coming from Florida was a great experience.

  • Felt like a nightclub not a game

by Joe on 1/17/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 3 out of 5

I realize that the hornets have little to cheer for. The arena is beautiful. Concessions aplenty (though oddly all locations in the upstairs Dr Pepper concourse had no food until 30 mins after gates opened). Prices reasonable The bad - the canned noise they play is unbearable. My son (a visiting team fan) said he got a headache from the constant banging of club-like music during the game! It’s distracting and real basketball teams (Celtics, knicks, etc) don’t do the same. It was a real shame, as it really detracted from the experience. Also, took 1.5 hours to get out of the parking garage next door. They need to work on parking exit plans.

  • Hornets vs. Grizzlies

    by Diva@60 on 1/7/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 3 out of 5

The Hornets are not playing well this season. I think that they need to get a dominant center and make points in the paint and do not always rely on the 3's. Also get a better coach. Spectrum Center is nice but I do not like the cashless option only

  • Amazing seats

by Jesse on 1/7/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

Overall, 10 out of 10 on the seats was able to see the whole game. The staff is very friendly. They had a variety of food at the concession stands overall great experience.

  • First NBA Game

by Brandy on 1/7/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

Bought tickets through Ticketmaster for my son for Christmas, was an amazing first time NBA game experience!!

  • Not comfortable

    by Will H on 1/6/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 3 out of 5

These seats (200s) were least comfortable seats in any basketball stadium I've been to. Snack stand lost my order so I had to wait longer for food worse than fast food.

  • Spectacular

by Thomas Matthew Daniels on 1/5/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 4 out of 5

I enjoyed the spectrum center and watching the Charlotte Hornets play the Los Angels Lakers. My family and I attended this event and it was a spectacle. We all felt safe but I did not like the fact that my cash was denied at several food stations. This experience was great overall.

  • Loud

by Baller on 1/5/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 1 out of 5

The acoustic were too loud, dj kept playing music during in between game play. The speaker system was fuzzy hard to hear players names. Otherwise fun game to watch Lebron, who had a chill win! We had made laminated posters but never made the screen, will attend next time with closer tickets. We were on the 200 level.

  • Awesome experience

by Corey on 1/4/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

My first NBA game ever at the age of 53 and it was everything I expected and some. After serving my country for 20 years, this truly reminds me of why the sacrifice is always great but the rewards of the laughter, unity and the energy in the stadium are greater. Attending my first NBA game made me cry because of my love 💓 of the game and my country

  • Nice atmosphere

by Stick on 1/3/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 4 out of 5

Good game and crowd there..the seating needs to be more comfortable.. needs cushion

  • AMAZING!!

by Syncere on 1/3/23Rating: 5 out of 5

One of the greatest things I've experienced. Being able to see Lebron and all my other favorite players with my family was amazing. I and my family will never forget this moment

  • Cool venue, OK fan experience

by Ben on 1/3/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 4 out of 5

I was visiting Charlotte from Memphis. I’m an avid Grizzlies fan, and go to nearly every game at the FedExForum. The Spectrum Center is a visually stunning venue, but the fan experience was lesser than that which I’m accustomed to. Getting in the venue was hard as is. We arrived 25 minutes before tip off and still missed it. Long lines and very few entrances for regular ticket buyers. The arena offers a wide variety of concessions from standard fare to an in-arena Chick-Fil-A! They also serve Coke products, which was a welcome change from the Forum back home. However, when you purchase a souvenir drink, they don’t offer free refills! You’re better off buying a regular drink or a beer (you’ll spend just as much). The team store was awesome. They sell Jordan’s, Lululemon with the team’s logo, and all your standard team store fare. The game itself was fun! It’s NBA basketball, what’s not to love. We had a great time!

  • Place Full Of Energy

by Sports Guy on 1/3/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

Entry was quick and pleasant the fan shop is right their once you enter, tons of good food places, state of the art facility very clean bathrooms or at least where my seats was, an I also had a great time at the game !!! They should possibly hire some people to direct the traffic coming out of the parking lots because a lot of people tend on walking pass the lot making it very hard to leave the Area!!!

  • Excellent experience!

by Winnie on 1/3/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

Everyone's first NBA game and the atmosphere and everything excellent. Everyone enjoyed the entertainment and arena. We will definitely be back for other events.

  • Great memories with my kids!

    by lucky79 on 1/1/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first trip to a Hornets game. I brought my two kids and we had a great time. Entry was not hard and it flowed smoothly. We really enjoyed the game and venue. We won't forget these great memories forever.

  • Great arena!

by SNC on 1/1/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

Love going to the games! The energy and fans are so much fun. Go Hornets!!!

  • It was ok

by Marcus on 12/26/22Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 1 out of 5

The seating was tight not enough leg room I'm only 5'3 meaning I'm short but my legs were cramped. The seats are so close to the person sitting next to you. The food that was being sold was obviously cooked way before the event started. The food was not as good as it should be for the price.
