Unusual Performer

Great performance. Intimate venue. Great opener band.
Charlotte has never been popular for her voice in France, but she has an amazing personality and her whispering kind of like way of singing is very distinctive and emotional . Her collaboration with Beck on her last album is just amazing and is perfect for Charlotte. The atmosphere at the concert was great. My only regret was that even close to the stage we could not hear clearly the songs lyrics...Maybe something wrong with the sound engineering.
Great performance great location .…….......................................................................
I went to the concert knowing more about the Gainsbourg family and Charlotte's film acting than her music. I think I had only heard a couple of her songs. I really enjoyed the concert. She was shy, but very charming, and although she has a really slight, feathery voice, it went really well with the songs and she had great musicians backing her up. However, I think I would have enjoyed the show better at a smaller, more intimate venue, like a local club. After the show I went ahead and downloaded her two CDs. While I wouldn't go so far as calling it amazing, I was really happy to have gone. As for the opening acts: I didn't care too much for AM, the first. It was okay: the folksy, singer-songwriter type of music, with a bit of bossa nova, but nothing original. The second act was all about electronic sounds, and they were either great or ridiculous, or both, depending who you asked. I actually liked them much better than the first opener.
A departure from other artists. Charlotte was relaxed, confident and eclectic with her blend of musical style. Her band was tight and they all connected well on every level. The only disappointment was she did not perform 555. However, she redeemed with her rendition of Melodie Nelson as a tribute to her father. Charlotte returned after her last set to a welcoming audience for more encores. The show was sold out. I am certain if she booked another night word would have gotten out and she'd have another sold out show tonight.
I have always been a fan of her movies, now Im a huge fan of her music. I thought she was amazing last night. I hope she comes back to chicago again really soon.
Exuding a lack of confidence in her singing, but great pyhsical beauty and a graceful manner, Charlotte Gainsbourg performed most or her new CD, IRM, at Park West last night. The CD is written almost completely by Beck and there is a certain resultant tunelessness to many of the songs that keep them from cranking up a crowd. The songs that got the strongest reaction were a lovely, soft version of Dylan's "Just Like a Woman" and one of the songs penned by Jarvis Cocker for her previous CD, 5:55. Unfortunately she omitted the title song from the Cocker authored album as well as the great "Songs that I Sing." Melody always matters most and I hope Ms. Gainsbourg takes a lesson from which numbers were best received by the respectably sized crowd
Charlotte Gainsbourg brought her beautiful face and paper thin voice to the Park West lasst evening. I would have been better suited re-listening to her records and watching one of her movies. Not even her competent band could help her overcome her absolutely awful voice.
I was excited to see Charlotte and was familiar with her "intimist" style from French songs I had seen her sing. Unfortunately she seems to have gone heavier in percussions with this new album and her voice cannot follow that style. Her words were inaudible and her low key style did not deliver a great performance. Don't get me wrong she was cute and added a bit of sweet comments about Chicago between the songs but no explanation around the reasons behind the songs. A shame. Although not a musician (she is a fantastic actress by trade) she was trying her hands at various (many) instruments and felt more like a kid playing around that truly adding value to her performance. She had a great band with her and her gadgets were just distracting. I would not recommend her as a performer, might be worth getting her album for a couple sweet songs though.
I really love Charlotte, but she needs to work on her projection and stage presence. The band overwhelmed her voice for most of the show. I enjoyed the 2nd half of the show much more than the first, she did seem to get more comfortable.
The opening band, AM, played some excellent music that was a great mixture of pop and soul. When Charlotte hit the stage it switched between rock, soft rock, techno, and even some hip hop. A great show with amazing sound.
Charlotte's stage presence is forgettable and her distinctive voice is lost in a live performance. Her band was superb.
She was great on stage but really has no voice. It was a little sad but we still had a lot of fun she has some great musicians, the whole feeling was right. I would go back again.
I was expexting Charlotte to be very quiet, with a little voice, offering a very intimate performance. But I was wrong: she rocked Park West for almost 90 minutes, people were singing and shouting, it was awesome! I think Charlotte herself was excellent with a beautiful voice and a kind of awkwardly cool stage presence. The band around her was just as great, apparently put together by one of the musicians who worked on the album with Beck. We could definitely feel the Beck influence.
It was my first time at the Park West theater and I was nicely surprised by the atmosphere: mix of lounge, café, concert room. Though, few people danced. Charlotte did a great job with interesting instrumental arrangements, kind of experimental but with success. Very well rythmed. sometimes I wished we heard more her voice than the instruments, even if the band was really good. I was disappointed that she did not sing her hit "5:55". The fans of her father were happy as she sang 2 of his songs. Big minus for the theater: we could not get out and re-entre and they did not sell any food inside. So we were starving.
the music was eclectic and relaxing yet invigorating!
i went to the concert curious to hear Charlotte Gainsbourg live for the first time not knowing the music from her latest album. Unfortunately, the concert was a huge disappointment. It was flat and had no character. It felt more like an indulgence on her part thinking she is a great artist. She didn't know all the words to her songs, and frankly, her voice loses interest when she sings in English. She lacked all charm. She has great style, but that doesn't make an engaging performance or an artist.
First part (intermissions) was very long , 90 minutes!, and the musiciens were not good, not good at all.... Charlotte Gainsbourg finally showed up at 9:35pm.... To me this is simply not acceptable.
Rarely do you find French entertainers in the US and the advertising for their events is so poor - you are lucky to trip on to them like I did this one. Charlotte is more known for her acting and her legendary parents. Therefore even though I didn't know her music, I just had to go. I think her style is a bit generational but I did enjoy the creative mix of her style and the music arrangements. I only rated it 4 stars because it was annoying that there were 2 opening performers before her that were not announced / expected. The second group (of 2 people) were very talented but their act would be best for sound tracks - for a live performance where you are not drunk or stoned, it was not very interesting.
