About

Hailed as a "must-see live performer" by Rolling Stone, and a "force to be reckoned with" by CMT, Charley Crockett crafts his singular "Gulf & Western" sound -- described as "very 21st century and very vintage" by NPR Music -- by synthesizing country, blues, soul, Cajun, R&B and other pieces of American Roots music. And when his voice comes out of your speakers, there is no confusing him for any other artist. As the Wall Street Journal writes, "Mr. Crockett's unique vocal style is one third Ernest Tubb honky-tonk with clipped-word diction, one third Bill Withers low-key, soulful crooning, and one third jazzy French Quarter second-line swagger."

With his latest album $10 Cowboy, Crockett didn't set out to make a themed record. He had released a concept album in 2022, the critically acclaimed The Man From Waco, propelling Crockett to new heights and establishing him as one of the leaders of a sparkling revival of traditional country and folk music.

For the follow up album, Crockett wrote freely, over a two-month period, as he wound his way across the United States on the back of a tour bus. The resulting songs--raw, personal, vivid portraits of a country in transition--ended up being connected after all.

"This material is written at truck stops, it's written at casinos, it's written in the alleys behind the venues, it's written in my truck parked up on South Congress in Austin," explains Crockett. "A ramblin' man like me, a genuine transient, is in a pretty damn good position to have something to say about America."

The album begins with the title track, a personal song that also offers a provocative idea about America. "A $10 Cowboy is a country singer who made himself on a street corner in America," Crockett says. "But the cowboy way, the cowboy mindset, that applies to anyone who doesn't feel free, who feels fenced in and bound to something."

As the album unfolds, you begin to understand that a $10 Cowboy is anyone who has hustled to get by, who didn't fit in, who has slept on other people's couches, or the street, who has fallen down, gotten up, and ventured from home chasing a paying gig, or a new start.

The album was recorded at Arlyn Studios in Austin, produced by Crockett and his long-time collaborator Billy Horton. It was recorded live to tape, with anywhere from 6-12 musicians on each track, giving the songs the feel of a live performance. It's a sound Crockett has been after for years. "The reason I cut it on tape is, when you get the right folks in the room, great players rise to the occasion. When that red light is on and the tape is rolling, you get the magic of a performance."

Crockett released his last full-length album The Man From Waco - which Rolling Stone named the #2 best Country album of the year - in 2022, and the momentum he built continued into 2023. Crockett made his NPR Tiny Desk debut, was a guest on The Daily Show, and appeared on the June 2023 cover of Texas Monthly. Crockett performed at both nights of Willie Nelson's 90th birthday celebration at the Hollywood Bowl in April 2023, and made his Bonnaroo debut last summer. Crockett also released The Man From Waco Redux, a companion to The Man From Waco featuring alternate versions of five songs, and Live from the Ryman, which documented Crockett's sold out November 2022 debut at the Mother Church of Country Music.

Fantastic artist- you get folk, country, blues, a showman and one helluva band to boot! Love his voice, wish I could’ve seen him both nights! His opener in dc was awesome too.

  • A Scorcher literally and figuratively

by Richard on 7/16/24XL Live - HarrisburgRating: 3 out of 5

My three star review is mainly regarding the experience at the venue. Charley Crockett is a phenomenal entertainer and the band sounded excellent. The show was full of older favorites and newer songs. This show seemed to be leaning more towards newer songs. We had been to Club XL in Harrisburg previously and had a great time. This was the first time in the Summertime and the first time we were at a show that was sold out . There is a bar in the room with a good selection of draft beers (some local) and cocktails at reasonable prices. Club XL has the main room where the artists are performing and space on each of the sides of the main room. You can go into either of these spaces and watch the show on a screen. Not sure if this space is included in determining the occupancy for the venue- It seemed by how crowded the room was that the show was oversold. They don't need to blast AC, but some ceiling fans would have improved the experience. The main room was packed, it was sweltering and there was no air circulation/movement. My wife carries a hand fan with her and people were leaning towards her to get some of the moving air. The band (Charley Crockett) was entertaining with great sound. It was hard to see even in such an intimate venue because the room was so packed. Clearly, the artist could have played a larger room.

  • Out of this world, freaking fantastic

  • Livenation is a parasite.

by TE on 7/2/24Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Charley and the Blue Drifters were fantastic, but it's hard to attend a LiveNation/Ticketmaster gig without feeling like you're getting scammed. The company operates like a cartel and fixes prices so high that it's impossible to justify ever going to one of their events ever again. The concerts do not feel like a place to enjoy music, but feel like they are designed to extract as much money as possible from the concertgoer. Also, parking at the venue costs as much as the ticket; what a joke. I opted to park off sight and walk in. LiveNation/Ticketmaster turned the "$10 Cowboy"tour into the $110 Cowboy tour with just the price of a GA ticket and parking. I can only imagine how embarrassing it is for great artists like Charley to work with such a predatory company and have it be the only way to play select venues. Hoping the DoJ lawsuit launched in May disrupts the LiveNation/Ticketmaster monopoly so that people can enjoy their shows with a sense of dignity instead of having their wallets wrung out.

  • Fantastic Evening!

by Get Bit on 7/2/24Hayden Homes Amphitheater - BendRating: 5 out of 5

Started the evening by taking my 2 oldest grandchildren to a meet and greet. Three acoustic songs and a brief conversation with Charley had the kids really excited. The show itself was amazing. Great performer that blends country, blues, and jazz into an amazing blend of music!!

  • Charley Crockett

Charley Crockett was amazing and can't wait to see him again!

  • Low energy and a bad opener

by justarandom on 6/30/24Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 3 out of 5

Charley out on a decent show but I really hoped for more than just standing there, singin’ & strummin’. Good music, just low energy. The opener was straight garbage. The music was good for background but the artist seemed pretty out of touch with modern gender roles during their song breaks. It was also raining but nobody cared, it’s western Washington in late spring. If anyone complains about that in a review they’re either a wimp or a tourist.

  • Great concert!

Thank you Chateau Ste Michelle for accommodating us, since my husband uses a wheelchair. We loved the concert and the overall vibe at the event. We love the outside venue, even in the rain. We brought our picnic and enjoyed everything about it.

Noeline Hofmann was great and will be fun to watch going forward. That girl is going somewhere, her voice is clear & beautiful. Charlie Crockett's voice is soooo good! His songs are truly amazing, The Blue Drifters are great & complement Charlie so well. The best show I've been to lately!

Charley Crockett and his band are INCREDIBLE live! They are some of the best living country players alive today. I've seen them play in Montreal & Edmonton, both times were musical highlight of my year. He's a born performer who has worked hard to be where he is now. Talented songwriter with a unique voice. Do yourself a favour and go see him live!
