About

Hailed as a "must-see live performer" by Rolling Stone, and a "force to be reckoned with" by CMT, Charley Crockett crafts his singular "Gulf & Western" sound -- described as "very 21st century and very vintage" by NPR Music -- by synthesizing country, blues, soul, Cajun, R&B and other pieces of American Roots music. And when his voice comes out of your speakers, there is no confusing him for any other artist. As the Wall Street Journal writes, "Mr. Crockett's unique vocal style is one third Ernest Tubb honky-tonk with clipped-word diction, one third Bill Withers low-key, soulful crooning, and one third jazzy French Quarter second-line swagger."

With his latest album $10 Cowboy, Crockett didn't set out to make a themed record. He had released a concept album in 2022, the critically acclaimed The Man From Waco, propelling Crockett to new heights and establishing him as one of the leaders of a sparkling revival of traditional country and folk music.

For the follow up album, Crockett wrote freely, over a two-month period, as he wound his way across the United States on the back of a tour bus. The resulting songs--raw, personal, vivid portraits of a country in transition--ended up being connected after all.

"This material is written at truck stops, it's written at casinos, it's written in the alleys behind the venues, it's written in my truck parked up on South Congress in Austin," explains Crockett. "A ramblin' man like me, a genuine transient, is in a pretty damn good position to have something to say about America."

The album begins with the title track, a personal song that also offers a provocative idea about America. "A $10 Cowboy is a country singer who made himself on a street corner in America," Crockett says. "But the cowboy way, the cowboy mindset, that applies to anyone who doesn't feel free, who feels fenced in and bound to something."

As the album unfolds, you begin to understand that a $10 Cowboy is anyone who has hustled to get by, who didn't fit in, who has slept on other people's couches, or the street, who has fallen down, gotten up, and ventured from home chasing a paying gig, or a new start.

The album was recorded at Arlyn Studios in Austin, produced by Crockett and his long-time collaborator Billy Horton. It was recorded live to tape, with anywhere from 6-12 musicians on each track, giving the songs the feel of a live performance. It's a sound Crockett has been after for years. "The reason I cut it on tape is, when you get the right folks in the room, great players rise to the occasion. When that red light is on and the tape is rolling, you get the magic of a performance."

Crockett released his last full-length album The Man From Waco - which Rolling Stone named the #2 best Country album of the year - in 2022, and the momentum he built continued into 2023. Crockett made his NPR Tiny Desk debut, was a guest on The Daily Show, and appeared on the June 2023 cover of Texas Monthly. Crockett performed at both nights of Willie Nelson's 90th birthday celebration at the Hollywood Bowl in April 2023, and made his Bonnaroo debut last summer. Crockett also released The Man From Waco Redux, a companion to The Man From Waco featuring alternate versions of five songs, and Live from the Ryman, which documented Crockett's sold out November 2022 debut at the Mother Church of Country Music.

  • Great entertainer great venue

by Tam on 12/6/22The Union - Salt Lake CityRating: 5 out of 5

Charley Crockett was so entertaining and fun. His voice was just as incredible live! The venue was really cool and i loved how wide open it was. A bad this is once it was packed, the thermostat i was standing next to, rose to 85 degrees and people started passing out. The emergency staff was there to help right away but this concert was in the middle of winter and that shouldn't have happened. Also the coat check needs a huge overhaul. One girl handing out coats to hundreds of people that want to go home is really awful. The drunk people were getting frustrated and started pushing. We were in that mob for like an hour. The staff all did the best they could and were all very nice.

  • Volume was too loud. Musi was good

Charley crocket was great but the venue had the volume cranked up so high we would have been better listening from outside. Wont be going back to the union but will be going to.see Charley again

My husband was not familiar with Charley or his music. He is a fine musician himself and was in awe of Charley and his band! He is a total convert! The show in DC was fantastic with everyone up and dancing and singing! He defines the true meaning of country!

  • The band was phenomenal, Charley is a real showman!

This is a concert that you should not miss out on. Everything was great. If you like country music, jazz, bluegrass you will absolutely enjoy the concert. The singing, all the music instruments, the show, & all of it. Yes I'm here from Lubbock, Tx & watched the show 8-24-22 at Buddy Holly Hall. The first thing I did it look where he was touring next. To follow & watch again.

by Lulabellski on 7/26/22Rating: 5 out of 5

Saw him recently at both the Rialto in Tucson, then at the El Rey Theatre in Albuquerque ... absolutely amazing shows!!! His energy is incredible, the Blue Drifters are all totally tuned in, and the songs could not be better. This guy and his band are the real deal! If you have not seen Charley Crockett and The Blue Drifters yet, so yourself a favor and indulge! I PROMISE youvwill not be disappointed!

  • Astounding Performance, Disappointing Sound System

by Connie From NM on 7/13/22Rialto Theatre-Tucson - TucsonRating: 4 out of 5

Big Charlie Crockett fan. He exceeded my highest expectations. His voice is sublime, and his showmanship is astounding. He danced with perfect rhythm and gave a super high energy, fantastic performance. Unfortunately, the sound system at the venue was not up to his talent. It was not clear and clean, so I was frustrated. I will certainly see him again as soon as possible. I can't imagine how great it will be with good sound.

  • Charlie

by Paula on 7/11/22Bally's Lake Tahoe - South Lake TahoeRating: 5 out of 5

Charlie was great. Venue felt dirty. No place to grab a bite to eat except steak house. People standing all around. Private conversation going on while Charlie was singing. They needed tighter security to keep guest’s in line. No mention of parking charge of $35 until we pulled in.

  • Charley Crockett experience

by J L on 7/11/22Bally's Lake Tahoe - South Lake TahoeRating: 4 out of 5

Access to the showroom was good. Seating assistance was pretty good. The opening band was really good. And Charley was amazing! He has a great group of musicians-very versatile and accomplished. Love the different music styles and genres he puts into his show-old country, new country, blues, big band. He does it all. Only complaint I had was the group of people in front of us that insisted on standing and dancing the entire time; made it impossible to see Charley well. We finally demanded that Bally's Security take care of the issue, which they did after a fashion.

  • Charley is better than ever

by Rusty on 7/11/22Bally's Lake Tahoe - South Lake TahoeRating: 5 out of 5

Last show I saw before Covid was Charley Crockett and that show was great. In two years his show has tightened up and has become a show. He’s a true entertainer.

  • Excellent

by L. F. on 7/10/22House of Blues Las Vegas - Las VegasRating: 5 out of 5

What an excellent venue. I saw an interview by Anthony Mason on CBS with Charlie Crockett and immediately looked for a place to see Charlie Live. So glad that I did; he is very talented and has the moves to back it up. I only wish that I had waited to enter as Charlie didn't start playing until 9 pm and there is not any seating, and I am 58 years old with bad knees. It was well worth the 6-hour drive!

  • Great performance
