Celtic Thunder in Concert

Seeing Irish musical phenomenon Celtic Thunder in person offers more than you might expect from a typical concert. The settings and showmanship are akin to a Broadway theatrical production, with a wealth of musical talent at the center of it. The five singers who make up Celtic Thunder are all enormously gifted vocalists, and their blend of Irish folk flavors with pop is a carefully concocted brew. But you get something extra when you see them live in concert. The elaborate stage visuals that accompany Celtic Thunder's performances are an essential part of the proceedings, leading the group to capture many past productions on CD and DVD. The combination of musicality and theatricality has made the group an international sensation since their start in the late 2000s. Every tour is a unique production unto itself: from 2008's The Show to 2012's Voyage, 2013's Mythology, and now their 2018 tour, X.

Celtic Thunder Background

The foresight of producer Sharon Browne first brought Celtic Thunder together. Browne’s vision combines the talents of five young, world-class Irish vocalists for a project that is as much about live performance as recordings, and creating a sound that keeps traditional Irish music at its core, while opening itself up to other influences—including contemporary pop/rock, spirituals, and holiday music. Ryan Kelly, Damian McGinty, Paul Byron, George Donaldson, and Keith Harkin made up the original quintet that formed in Ireland in 2007. On early albums like ‘Celtic Thunder: The Show’ and ‘Celtic Thunder: Act Two,’ they established an approach that appealed to a broad cross section of music fans, and they performed concerts that brought elaborate visuals and bold theatricality into the mix. Today only Kelly and McGinty remain from the original lineup, but Celtic Thunder continues to be an international sensation, and the group's peerless vocals and unbridled showmanship remain on point.

The facilities were convenient, very nice, and modern. Celtic Thunder could not have put on a better show. They went from serious to hilarious. They had everyone participating and involved. This was the first live performance I have attended by CT and it did not disappoint. I have listened to their music for years.

    Second time was a charm

by Hoh on 10/24/23Brown County Music Center - Nashville

I wrote less than a favorable review on the Warren Oh performance on Oct 11. This overall experience was much better, The guys were high powered, audience was wonderful, and venue was excellent. Much improved show over the Oct 11 performance.

    Words cannot describe...

    by Elyssa S. on 10/23/23

Words cannot describe how amazing this concert was. It has been a dream of mine for a long time to see Celtic Thunder in concert and they definitely did not disappoint! This tour, I was lucky enough to see them both in Shipshewana and in Detroit. The whole experience was amazing, the vocals were 10,000 times better in person than I could have imagined and they take you on a journey with their music that touches every emotion; it leaves you wanting to laugh and cry in turn. You can see the heartfelt way they sing the songs and the fun they have on stage together. I loved that this tour and album goes back to their Irish roots; nothing beats a song that tells a story and that means something to the performers. Ryan was definitely missed but Ronan was absolutely amazing and a wonderful addition to the group. Honestly, I think the group only gets better and better with each album. I will definitely be back the next opportunity I have!

    Too many slow, sad songs

by J Patrick on 10/23/23Fox Theatre Detroit - Detroit

Saw Celtic Thunder for the first time at the Fox Theatre in Detroit on March 19. Heard many good things about Celtic Thunder and brought my dad (an Irish citizen) for his birthday along with my entire family to the show. We were all quite disappointed by the pace of the whole first half of the show. Though the songs were performed very well, it was one sad song after another. I realize it's not St. Patrick's Day, but the energy in the entire theater changed when they played more upbeat, fun, sing-a-long songs like "Seven Drunken Nights."It's really a shame that the show wasn't more entertaining due to the set list. In addition to performing more of their best hits, fan favorites, and pop/country covers, they could really step up the entertainment value by including Irish step dancers or even some funny banter/stories in between songs. I would describe Celtic Thunder as very good singers, and nothing more. You don't experience anything more by seeing them in a live performance versus listening to a CD track. At least you can skip over the bad songs on a CD...I would not recommend this show to others unless they are purely male vocalist/ensemble enthusiasts or something.
