Cecile McLorin Salvant's singling swept me and the audience away. Her voice is melodic and magical...She pulls you in and never let's you go. Her musicality and jazz presence is beyond her years...a rising star with no sign of turning back.
An incredibly unforgettable and amazing concert! Cecile's vocal skills are unsurpassed, she has the ability to create visuals with the music she creates. The band were equally phenomenal, most notably the drummer, Lorenzo Leathers. His skills blew me away!
I so wanted to like this newer female jazz vocalist. However, Cecile's set list is so full of melancholy lyrics that she seemed to lack energy and it just got boring in the first set. You know the saying, "If it ain't got that swing?" She has a gorgeous voice and good musicians but frequently she would swallow her lyrics or whisper them so often that the listener feels cheated. I believe that she would have more potential with a good manager, better stage direction and a classier look. Studying the energy and vibe of Dee Dee Bridgewater, Diane Reeves or the late, great Ella would be heading in the right direction for Cecile.
What a great concert. I wish much success for Ms. Salvant.
