About

Carpenter Brut in Concert

With its arrays of aggressive beats, blazing guitars, and panoramic keyboards, the music of Carpenter Brut obliterates every stereotype about synthwave. Of course, that's entirely the goal: Project founder Franck Hueso—a French musician who came to songwriting after deciding he was tired of production—wanted his songs to combine the propulsive electro-dance favored by Justice with the kind of evocative horror movie compositions crafted by John Carpenter.

Carpenter Brut's releases succeed wildly at combining these seemingly disparate inspirations. The 2015 EP collection ‘Trilogy' is cinematic and diverse, as it touches on booming synth-pop and zigzagging EDM, while the group's official debut full-length, 2018's ‘Leather Teeth,' is retro and playful. "Cheerleader Effect" pairs Depeche Mode-caliber electro throbs with dramatic vocals from Norwegian musician Kristoffer Rygg; "Sunday Lunch" is a humid ‘Miami Vice' soundtrack nod with breezy saxophone; and "Beware the Beast" approximates a keyboard-splashed early '80s hard rock hit, thanks to squalling electric guitars and desperate vocals from Mat McNerney.

Hueso's own lineage is more opaque. He prefers to keep much of his background shrouded in mystery, although he does allow that the project is named after the Charpentier Brut champagne. In a 2017 ‘Vice' interview, the musician also revealed that he had his mind rearranged by Meshuggah's 1995 metal touchstone ‘Destroy Erase Improve,' drummed along to Iron Maiden songs as a kid, and counts Type O Negative and the Deftones as faves.

With such a pedigree, it's no wonder Carpenter Brut has toured the U.S. with fellow enigmatic musicians Ghost and electro-industrial aggressors Ministry. Both of these acts are also an ideal fit for Hueso's stage ambitions: To re-create Carpenter Brut compositions in concert, he uses live musicians and syncs up the performance to film and video projections, making an appropriately epic visual feast for the eyes and ears.

  • Started Hard and Never Let Up

by N. S. on 9/7/22The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver SpringRating: 5 out of 5

Notes from the show: - I wasn't expecting a moshpit at a synthwave show. - Carpenter Brut (Franck Hueso) didn't say a single word during the show yet masterfully conducted the audience masterfully with hand gestures. - Tie your shoes before you go into the pit. - I've seen less crowd surfing at a Rise Against concert. - A friend took my spare ticket not knowing anything about the show and had never listened to Carpenter Brut before the set started. Once the first bassline hit a smile spread across their face and was still there when we walked to the car. tl;dr: Get yourself tickets and go see Carpenter Brut every chance you get.

  • Incredible Show

Carpenter Brut puts on an amazing show. Energy in the Fillmore was great, lightshow was amazing, and crowd was really into it.

  • FANTASTIC show!!!

by Ralphy on 9/6/22The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver SpringRating: 5 out of 5

Seriously amazing show. I've been dying to see Carpenter Brut ever since I first heard Leather Teeth. I had high hopes and they still absolutely shattered my expectations. As soon as they're back in the states I'll be seeing them again. The Fillmore Silver Spring was great as always and it remains one of my favorite venues in the DC/Baltimore area. The only complaint I have is that they had the upstairs section closed apart from the VIP ticket seating area. Aside from that relatively minor detail, I had a great time!

  • Synth for metalheads

by Lucas on 8/30/22Varsity Theater - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first electronic show - but I'll probably always count it in my top metal shows. Their stage presence and lighting was incredible, the songs flowed together breathlessly, and the crowd was as friendly and energetic as any metal show I've been to. I didn't know what to expect from live darksynth, but I was blown away.

  • When Metal and Retro Wave Music Collide

by TrippinJojo on 5/9/18Irving Plaza - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I'm not really into EDM style of music or anything electronic but this was a great experience to see Metal and New Wave influences collide. I LOVED the videos playing as the band played. I personally didnt care for Gost but it was alright.

  • Intense As Hell, But Not For Everyone

by Sepurb on 3/11/17Brighton Music Hall - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

The Carpenter Brut concert was everything that I wanted it to be and more. It was a full house, and the music was fantastic. If you're into both 80's music and metal, then Carpenter Brut is a must see. If you are not into loud, ear blasting music, then this concert is not for you. My only complaint was the length of the opening acts. Both opening acts were decent, however, they ran much longer than I anticipated. We arrived at the venue at 8:45, the first act started at 9:15, and it wasn't until around 12:00 or 12:30 until Carpenter Brut came on. As a result, my advice would be to see if the opening acts interest you, and if they don't, arrive about an hour after the set start time. That being said, you do get more then your money's worth if you enjoy all three acts.
