Calgary Flames History

The Flames originated in Atlanta, Georgia in 1972. After eight years, they relocated to Calgary in 1980, where they were greeted by a far more hockey-friendly fanbase. Thus began the Battle of Alberta, which refers to the ongoing rivalry between the Flames and the Edmonton Oilers to the north.

The Flames were vanguards in terms of bringing in foreign players, as Håkan Loob became one of the league's first European stars. Loob, Doug Gilmour, Joe Nieuwendyk, Mike Vernon, Lanny McDonald, and Al MacInnis were the stars behind the Flames' only Stanley Cup Championship in 1989, gaining a measure of payback against the Montreal Canadiens in six games. Montreal had defeated the Flames in the Stanley Cup Final three years earlier.

Despite a block on players from the USSR, the Flames had the foresight to draft Russian star Sergei Makarov in 1983. Makarov was among the first Russians to play in the NHL when he joined the Flames in 1989-1990.

Despite financial issues, the diminutive Theo Fleury and Jarome Iginla led the Flames throughout the '90s, bouncing in and out of the postseason with little long-term success until 2004, when the Flames made another run at the Cup, only to lose to the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games. The Flames have made it to the Playoffs 25 times and have two Presidents' Trophies to their credit, along with eight division championships.

Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome

Home to the Calgary Flames, the idea for the Scotiabank Saddledome(Opens in new tab) was seeded when it became clear that two major events would be in need of a world-class arena — the bid for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games and the arrival of an NHL franchise. The Saddledome opened its doors on October 15, 1983. The arena became a star attraction during the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, hosting both the figure skating and hockey competitions. In the fall of 1994, the arena underwent renovations and one year later the new Scotiabank Saddledome was unveiled. The Calgary Flames celebrated their first season at the arena during their home opener for the 1995-1996 season. The arena can seat more than 19,000 guests and hosts 150 events per year.

  • Bang for puck one of the better rinks in NHL

by Izzy on 4/9/24Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Price point from beers, food and tickets this is one of the better places to catch an NHL game. I’m from Edmonton and it costs you a 1st born child to go to the games. Just for corporate people I guess. Definitely family friendly and not a bad seat in the building

  • Good time

by Pensfan on 3/5/24Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

Great game and atmosphere. It’ll be even better once Calgary gets a new rink they deserve and desperately need.

  • Press level was fun .

    by chrisdx2 on 2/20/24Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Watched game from rafters Great food . Flames lost to Red Wings 5 to 0 Bad play I guess . They improved and won against Winipeg Jets

  • The staff were amazing!

by Dee on 1/30/24Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

The event was amazing and the staff there was so helpful and kind. Spent time with me to find where I was going as I had no clue. Went the extra mile.

  • Old stadium awful tv’s in the bleeders

by Fan on 1/23/24Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

Yes I know the tickets are up there. Experience was good despite a dilapidated building. I know they are getting a new area but the fact that the screens up there are so old they might as well be black and white. Just another embarrassing thing the the Calgary entertainment group love to show their fan basis’ they don’t care at all but still demand tax payer dollars to keep there billion dollars vanity project afloat. Can we get a ownership group that wants to

  • Parking sucks but we enjoyed the game

by Mike @ alyssa on 1/23/24Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

It was an amazing experience! Me and my beautiful girlfriend had at blast at the game 10/10

  • I forgot how much I hate going to games

by Flames Fan on 1/22/24Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 1 out of 5

I spent the money for great seat only to spend 20 minutes in line for the bathroom twice and twenty minutes in line for food and drinks twice. Im not ignorant. I realize the old facility has this issue but youd think that at least food service would be fast. Oh yeah and then the longest lineup of all was to pay for parking. After spending 500 bucks on tickets for two people they gotta make us all wait to park to get there 18 bucks in parking. Just a horrible setup and arrangement by all parties involved. I was debating become a season ticket holder. Not a chance in hell now. I wouldnt want to host clients here ever. Im really looking forward to watching the games i feel like at home. Ive got lots of money and I am a fan but im not going to anymore flames games. If I really want to get the first class flames experience at home ill install a timed lock on my bathroom at home and sit in my car for 45 minutes waiting to park on my driveway.

  • Great game

by Fan on 1/3/24Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

A game worth watching, great New Year’s Eve vibe and audience compared to the usual Saddle morgue full of Calgary businessmen who aren’t even watching the game.

  • Flames game

Fantastic seats, not the best performance by the flames they can do better .

by Skyhawk on 12/10/23Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

Awesome game with perfect angle viewing to the rink Perfect comback by the Flames 🔥 One heck of a vertical climb up the stairs to our seat . Hopefully the new rink will have an elevator or 2 Go Flames 🔥

  • Flames preseason Sept. 24+29. 2023.

by Chris Tazzman on 10/2/23Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

I figured I would combine my review for the two preseason games I attended this week. I am a nine-game pack holder in section 203 row 23, but I like these preseason games to catch a game from a bit better seat without breaking the bank. The Flames won 10-0 on Sunday Sept 24 over Vancouver and I was able to get good seats in row 19 section 202 for myself and three others for $124 through Ticketmaster ticket exchange. The game on Friday Sep. 29 I got my cousin (who has never seen a game from the first bowl) and I section 102 row 24 for $135 each which is around the price for a press level seat for a regular season Battle of Alberta. Granted the Oilers never bring any stars down, but it is nice to see a game in the first bowl regardless. Off to tonight's final preseason game against the Jets which is the first game in my pack then it all starts for real Oct. 11. Can't wait, GO FLAMES!!!!!!!

  • Flames/Kings March 28/23

by Chris Tazzman on 3/31/23Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Great game again, really good night out. Flames won an important game 2-1 over a divisional rival.

  • Flames/Sharks March 25, 2023

by Chris Tazzman on 3/28/23Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Another great game, Flames won 5-3 on this occasion. I had a great seat in section 203, row 17, seat 11. I had a promo code in December from the Flames 12 Days of Christmas, so it was a bit of a deal as well.

  • Old barn

by Matt on 3/5/23Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

Old stadium with character. Seats were good. Limited washrooms on the concourse which makes for long waits. Concourse also crammed more than other arenas. Still a lot of history here. Recommend lower bowl

  • Leafs won, Calgary lost

by Pensfan on 3/5/23Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

Was in the press level. The hand railings were in my view and people were constantly walking up and down. People have no brains. Hopefully Calgary gets a new rink soon.

  • Leafs victorious!

by Tom on 3/5/23Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

I have been on a mission to see the Leafs play in every arena in the NHL, or at least see them play ever team! This was a really good game very exciting lots of actions at both ends.

  • Good time

by Pensfan on 1/24/23Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

Love visiting Calgary. Rink needs to be bigger so hopefully they approve a new one soon… other than that, it’s a great time at the Saddledome

  • Nucks fan in the Saddledome

by Mecks on 12/30/22Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing atmosphere and energy, (far better than the home barn). Can’t wait for a new home though, the concourse is far too tight and washroom lineups are far too long.

  • Low rent at a high cost

by Caps fan on 12/6/22Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 2 out of 5

The facility is in bad shape! The concessions had a limited variety of drinks (3 beers). The cost was high -$125/ ticket for a second tier side seat. I thought the programming at breaks were good, but ultimately the facility needs to be improved. Badly!

  • Flames/Caps Dec 3, 2022

by Chris Tazzman on 12/4/22Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Another great time seeing my beloved Calgary Flames. Flames won 5-2 over the Capitals. Ovi was invisible again. It was my fourth time seeing Ovi play live against the Flames, and he has scored exactly no goals, and chipped in an assist in one of those games back in October 2018. One assist now in four games that I have attended. Good though because I am a Flames fan, but strange. His arch enemy Sydney Crosby has one assist in the three total games that I've seen him play live as well against the Flames. My Flames over the years have limited the stars of that generation to a combined total of 0 goals, 2 assists in 7 games when I park my but in the stands. Saw each of them get stopped in one shootout attempt to boot. Go Flames!!!!!!
