BRUNO MARS IN CONCERT

Classic showmanship in the vein of James Brown and Michael Jackson is alive and well, and Bruno Mars is here to prove it. Mars takes the stage with The Hooligans, a tightly choreographed nine-piece soul band that serves as the perfect representation of his commitment to the live experience – a commitment that led to his selection as the halftime performer at Super Bowl XLVIII. A classic song-and-dance man and multi-platinum selling pop star, Mars references everyone from Prince to The Police in both his image and sound, but the result is more than mere imitation; as a songwriter and producer, he has successfully combined the sounds of his pop idols with reggae and hip hop to create a new generation of genre-crossing hits. In anticipation of his Super Bowl performance, fans can get tickets to catch Bruno Mars in concert on 2013’s Moonshine Jungle Tour.

BRUNO MARS BACKGROUND

Mars was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he gained his first exposure to music playing rock and Motown covers in his family’s band, The Love Notes. By age five, the Elvis Presley impersonations he performed with the band had gained him a reputation on the island and landed him a cameo in the 1992 film Honeymoon in Vegas. After high school, Mars moved to Los Angeles to pursue music, finding initial success as a member of The Smeezingtons, the writing and production team behind Flo Rida’s 2009 hit “Right Round.” His first success as a solo artist came in 2010 with “Nothing On You,” a collaboration with rapper B.o.B. that peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned the duo several Grammy nominations. Mars’ debut album, 2010’s Doo-Wops & Hooligans, landed at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and contained two worldwide No. 1  hits with “Grenade” and feel-good ballad “Just The Way You Are,” which nabbed him his first Grammy (Best Male Pop Vocal Performance). Sophomore album Unorthodox Jukebox (2012) was an even bigger success, peaking at No. 1  on the Billboard 200 and spawning the ubiquitous hits “Locked Out of Heaven” and “When I Was Your Man.”

  • Bruno Mars is terrific in concert!

by Danirobie on 5/10/11Agganis Arena - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

I went with a friend and our three young daughters to the Bruno Mars concert and I have to admit that I enjoyed it as much as they did. Bruno Mars sounded fantastic and gave a great show. Janelle Monae was a little out there for the girls - they didn't get what she was doing. Could have done without the 1st warm-up band from England - they were terrible. Best part of the night was Mr. Mars - he was amazing.

I liked both artists very much, its hard to find an artist with the energy and creativity as Janelle. Bruno Mars will surprise anyone who goes to his shows, this is an extremely talented young man.

I am 46 years old and never listen to the radio because I don't own a car and I use my ipod on the train. I feel like I am missing all of the new artists and was lucky to discover Bruno Mars. He is fantastic. This concert was on a Sunday night and people started leaving before his encore, he handled it well and delivered a beautiful last song.

Janelle Monae does some weird things, but they made the concert interesting and unique. Bruno Mars sounds exactly like he does in his recordings, which is amazing. They were both fantastic!! Plan B not so much...

  • Raw vocal talent

by Anonymous on 5/10/11Agganis Arena - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Bruno Mars and Janelle Monae had very different acts - Bruno was colloquial and jokey, with lots of chatter between and during songs, while Janelle transitioned almost without pause from song to song, creating more of a fluid performance than a standard self-announced concert - but they both showed up ready to blast the audience's face off with their incredible singing.

  • SO GOOD.

  • Bruno Mars Is Out Of This World!!!

by Anonymous on 5/6/11Roseland Ballroom - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I was aware of Bruno Mars ever since last year when he was featured on B.o.B.'s song "Nothin' On You", Travie McCoy's song "Billionaire", and Bruno's first single "Just The Way You Are". I didn't actually become of Bruno Mars fan until his second single "Grenade" came out last fall, and I've been hooked on him ever since! I knew that I had to see him in concert after seeing video clips of him on Youtube and that Grammy performance that he and Janelle Monae did together which got them both a standing ovation. Bruno Mars is so incredibly talented...he reminds me so much of Michael Jackson. I love the way that he sings, moves, and he just oozes sex appeal. Now as far as the concert went, I was a big fan of Bruno Mars before I attended the show and came out a massive fan!!! I was so mesmerized by his presence. He has that "IT" factor and not many musicians have that. He has the whole showmanship down to a science. He also has such a great voice and sounds even better live. He can really SANG which blew me away! I had such a fantastic time and didn’t want the show to end!!! I will defiantly be seeing Bruno again whenever his next tour is!!! I'm glad I got the chance to see him in a more intimate setting because I know that from here on, he'll become an even bigger star than he is now and will be selling out arenas. Waiting outside in the windy, cold, and pouring rain for over 4 hrs. was well worth it. I ended up in the second row and could see everything! I also invited my cousin along with me who is a huge Janelle Monae fan and she really enjoyed herself too! Janelle Monae is very talented as well. I got the opportunity to see her live before when she opened for Prince last December at MSG, so it was really exciting to see her again, but up close this time!!! (I said that Lady Gaga's Monster Ball tour was the best concert of 2011, but I was DEAD wrong. Bruno and Janelle's show was by far the best show I've seen in such a long time. Sometimes less is more...I prefer talent over smoke and mirrors.) This is the best $35 I've ever spent. The show was worth so much more money in my opinion. Even a few days later, I still can't stop thinking about the show. I've even converted my mom into a Bruno Mars fan after showing her video clips of the show that I recorded. I have a feeling that Bruno Mars is going to be around for a really long time. Talent like his is very rare these days.

Both Monae and Mars created a gorgeous multimedia extravaganza which was a feast for the eyes. If you are curious to see pictures, there is a more in-depth review with photos on my musikati blog.

The kickoff to the "Hooligans in Wondaland" was Amazing. I think Janelle Monae's show was amazing. It was so visual. Bruno was enchanting!

  • Bruno Mars < Janelle Monae !!

    by ELPadrin0 on 5/6/11Roseland Ballroom - New YorkRating: 2 out of 5

I can't believe that Janelle Monae Performed for a longer period of time than Bruno Mars. Her performance was better than Bruno Mars even if you couldn't hear the lyrics. The Fact that this was Standing Room Only Made it Horrible!

  • Great show- LOTS of teenage girls

by APut on 5/6/11Roseland Ballroom - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

So for starters, let me just say Janelle Monae is amazing live. She and Bruno both dance and sing with no inhibitions. The show was incredibly entertaining, danceable, and great to watch. Bruno Mars also has a beautiful voice. That being said, beware the teeny-bopper craze. Apparently Bruno Mars is the new hot thing for teenage girls ages 12-18. While this can be fun (lots of screaming and swooning) this can also make the crowd at the show really frustrating. We had lots of young girls pushing and shoving (first concert?) and holding up signs saying "Bruno, Marry Me?" or "Bruno, Prom?" If you want to see this dynamite combination of performers, I would recommend going to a venue that is 18+, or even 21+. All teenage girls aside, amazing music and dancing and a really fun show.

  • Bruno was the best!!

Had an awesome time at the concert! Bruno Mars exceeded expectations and really enjoyed Plan B. A great up and coming local band, Another Kind of Buffalo, opened the show and did an outstanding job! Loved it!

  • Bruno I'm in awe of you!!

by Tsuru on 1/3/11Neal S Blaisdell Arena - HonoluluRating: 5 out of 5

I am still in awe of Bruno's performance. His sexy, raspy, voice haunts my mind and I am so grateful to have been able to see him perform in person. When I got home to Kauai, I immediately went on a search for his cd and I started to panic as most of the stores I visited were sold out, I was lucky to get one of the last 5 available on the island. He is the ultimate musician, the whole package. His stage presence is captivating, he can play multiple instruments, he can dance, he can sing and just oozes sexiness. His lyrics are so beautiful and sincere, so pure in emotion. It's easy to relate to what his songs talk about. During the concert we smiled, we laughed, we danced and cried. He has a way of making a woman feel so special, especially when he sings, "girl you're amazing, just the way you are" you believe it and it makes you smile...I'm still grinning. I look forward to having him come back home soon so we can show him again how proud we are of him. Bruno...you're amazing!

I saw justin bieber and I think Bruno mars's concert was WAY better... a must see... He sings all his songs even his EP and more ( Michael Jackson ) The opening act the love notes were very good funny classic.

  • BRUNO MARS WAS AWESOME!!!!

by RiceNoodleSoup on 12/29/10Neal S Blaisdell Arena - HonoluluRating: 5 out of 5

I had no idea what to expect going into this event. I wasn't so sure that he, Bruno Mars, could carry on a entire concert with just the few songs that he released on 1 album...but i was very mistaken and i was very very entertained. The opening act of his fathers band was a little bit out of left field because it wasn't meant for the same crowd. But Augie T, the comedian did a great job of pumping everyone up for the main event. To sum it all up...Bruno Mars is a natural ENTERTAINER and i left VERY ENTERTAINED!!!

  • Bruno Mars is amazing:)

Bruno was so awesome. I loved every minute of the concert. I was a fan of his before but after seeing him live I just love him. I have never heard Top of The World until the concert. That is such a good song. He opened playing the drums and his voice is amazing. He is so talented. He is such a natural performer. I had so much fun. I can't wait to see him again. If you have not seen Bruno live you don't know what you are missing:) I wish it wasn't at a college campus ( I felt old, LOL ).
