Mars takes the stage with The Hooligans, a tightly choreographed nine-piece soul band that serves as the perfect representation of his commitment to the live experience β a commitment that led to his selection as the halftime performer at Super Bowl XLVIII. Mars was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he gained his first exposure to music playing rock and Motown covers in his familyβs band, The Love Notes. By age five, the Elvis Presley impersonations he performed with the band had gained him a reputation on the island and landed him a cameo in the 1992 film Honeymoon in Vegas. After high school, Mars moved to Los Angeles to pursue music, finding initial success as a member of The Smeezingtons, the writing and production team behind Flo Ridaβs 2009 hit βRight Round.β His first success as a solo artist came in 2010 with βNothing On You,β a collaboration with rapper B.o.B. that peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned the duo several Grammy nominations. Marsβ debut album, 2010βs Doo-Wops & Hooligans, landed at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and contained two worldwide No. 1 Β hits with βGrenadeβ and feel-good ballad βJust The Way You Are,β which nabbed him his first Grammy (Best Male Pop Vocal Performance). Sophomore album Unorthodox Jukebox (2012) was an even bigger success, peaking at No. 1 Β on the Billboard 200 and spawning the ubiquitous hits βLocked Out of Heavenβ and βWhen I Was Your Man.β

Left Anchorage at 4am, drove through Canada, survived a moose encounter, and made it just in time! Hadn't slept in 36 hours but Bruno's energy had me WIDE awake. When he played 'Talking to the Moon' I legit cried thinking about all those nights driving under the Alaskan stars to get here. As someone who typically scoffs at mainstream pop, I must begrudgingly confess that Mars's showmanship rivals the legends of Motown. His command of vintage funk sensibilities while maintaining modern production values is *actually* impressive. The horn section was impeccably mixed (rare these days), and his James Brown footwork was studiedly authentic. Even caught myself doing the forbidden: dancing in public. Still hate autotune though.

Living in Japan, I've been waiting YEARS to see Bruno. Finally bit the bullet and flew 9 hours for this show! My jetlag disappeared the second he hit that first note of '24K Magic'. The way he did that James Brown split while hitting those high notes in 'Leave the Door Open'?! INSANE. Even taught myself some basic English just to sing along! My voice is gone, my wallet's empty, but my heart is so full. Would cross the Pacific Ocean again in a heartbeat for this magical night. βοΈπ΅π
