About Bristol Motor Speedway

You can tell a lot about the character of Bristol Motor Speedway from the nicknames assigned to the venue by racing fans. There are four in wide circulation: "The Last Great Colosseum" and "The Bullring" for the track's shape; "The World's Fastest Half-Mile" for its speed (cars complete laps in about 15 seconds); and "Thunder Valley" for its noise. The track is steeply banked and ringed with stadium-style seating. With a capacity of 162,000, it is the third-largest sports venue in the United States and the seventh-largest in the world.

Bristol Motor Speedway History

Bristol Motor Speedway, located in the northeast corner of Tennessee, opened in 1961. It was built by Carl Moore, Larry Carrier, and R.G. Pope on the site of a former dairy farm. They drew their inspiration from a trip to Charlotte Motor Speedway, but the $600,000 Bristol track was a more intimate (and noisier) venue, and in 1969 the track was reconfigured with its signature steep banks. In 1992, BMS replaced its asphalt surface with a concrete surface that is now its other hallmark. It is something of a celebrity, having served as the basis for the fictional Motor Speedway of the South in the Disney/Pixar film Cars.

The speedway is home to races in the NASCAR Cup Series, the NASCAR Xfinity Series, NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series, ARCA Menards Series East, and the NHRA Mello Yellow Drag Racing Series. In the Cup Series, racing great Richard Petty holds the track record for most Top 10 finishes (with 37) and most starts (with 60). Darrell Waltrip leads with 12 all-time wins. The all-time winningest car owner at BMS is the legendary Junior Johnson, with 21 victories. Over the course of a week in 2010, Kyle Busch made history by winning three NASCAR national series races in a single race meeting: the Truck Series race on a Wednesday, then the Nationwide Series race, and the Spring Cup Series race.

the pre-race show was without a doubt the best I have seen before a race. The folks at Bristol out did themselves. My family and I thank all of you

  • Best race of the season

by Anonymous on 8/29/10Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 5 out of 5

It was a good time. As any large event, a challenge with parking and hiking to the track. And of course traffic was a headache, but all these things can be expected. The experience of watching Bristol under the lights, was well worth any challenges there were. If you have the opportunity to go, GO!!!!

Bristol Motor Speedway had alot to offer the fans that attended. We listened to good music and there was a wide variety of food and merchandise venders. In spite of the afternoon rain, the race started on schedule. The flyover was fantastic and a beautiful fireworks display followed the race.

  • Race was unforgetable

We had an overall good time at the race. Venue access was limited due to large crowds, shuttling made this issue more bearable. Would definitely go again.

I'll never forget this event! Just being there watching those cars going around the track. They looked like toys; but I could see their numbers. Too fast, to see drivers.

  • Not so Bristol

by DegaPhil on 8/25/10Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 2 out of 5

Although the race had its good moments I am disapointed that nascars COT car has destroyed the great racing that Bristol has had in years past.Hopefully, with the infinite number of changes they have made in the past 2 or 3 years, they will migrate back to something that resembles the Bristol of old and satisfy the fans again before its too late.

  • Awesome

    by countryboy4182003 on 8/24/10Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 5 out of 5

The Bristol night race is awesome. The best nascar track I have been to. Will go again if given the chance. If you dont go to but one race, make it this one. The only offset is the walk from where you park. But well worth the walk.

  • If you only go to One Race make it this one

by Dianeinla on 8/24/10Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 5 out of 5

The race track at Bristol is unlike any other. Put the racing under the lights and it becomes almost magical. Tickets for this event were passed from one generation to another and were frequently only available from scalpers. Recent economic conditions have forced season ticket holders to give up tickets so they now are available again. And once you buy you have the ability to renew those seats year after year. Only negative about the experience is the track cannot get the hotels/motels in the area to stop gouging customers. A room that is $69 on Monday doesn't magically become so much better as to be worth $300 on Thursday. Something needs to be done about making it easier for people to come from out of town.

Something to remember always! I'll be telling my Grandkids about it for years to come.

  • by marc4401 on 8/24/10Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 5 out of 5

The best part is my seats were right were Jimmy Johnson crashed, It didn't matter who won as long as it wasn't Johnson or Gordon, so what can make the day more spectacular that he wrecked right in front of us (As long as he's ok I am not evil) I couldn't have left more happier.

  • The night the lights came on!!!

by ShadrachShadrach on 8/23/10Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 5 out of 5

Only my second Nascar event ever, but I forsee many more in my future. To say the least -"you gotta see it to believe it". We had seats in turn 4 as far up as you could get and I felt like we had the best seats in the house. The only thing you can't see at this track is whats going on in the parking lot :). Kyle Bush took all 3 races at this track on this trip, that was a Nascar first ever. It was the 100th "Cup" race held at Bristol. And an infamous night race to top it off. If you LOVE racing you've probably already been, but even if you just like racing you've got to go to a night race at Bristol, "The worlds fastest half mile". There is no way you could leave disappointed. It was AWESOME!!! Can't wait to do it again.
