About Bristol Motor Speedway

You can tell a lot about the character of Bristol Motor Speedway from the nicknames assigned to the venue by racing fans. There are four in wide circulation: "The Last Great Colosseum" and "The Bullring" for the track's shape; "The World's Fastest Half-Mile" for its speed (cars complete laps in about 15 seconds); and "Thunder Valley" for its noise. The track is steeply banked and ringed with stadium-style seating. With a capacity of 162,000, it is the third-largest sports venue in the United States and the seventh-largest in the world.

Bristol Motor Speedway History

Bristol Motor Speedway, located in the northeast corner of Tennessee, opened in 1961. It was built by Carl Moore, Larry Carrier, and R.G. Pope on the site of a former dairy farm. They drew their inspiration from a trip to Charlotte Motor Speedway, but the $600,000 Bristol track was a more intimate (and noisier) venue, and in 1969 the track was reconfigured with its signature steep banks. In 1992, BMS replaced its asphalt surface with a concrete surface that is now its other hallmark. It is something of a celebrity, having served as the basis for the fictional Motor Speedway of the South in the Disney/Pixar film Cars.

The speedway is home to races in the NASCAR Cup Series, the NASCAR Xfinity Series, NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series, ARCA Menards Series East, and the NHRA Mello Yellow Drag Racing Series. In the Cup Series, racing great Richard Petty holds the track record for most Top 10 finishes (with 37) and most starts (with 60). Darrell Waltrip leads with 12 all-time wins. The all-time winningest car owner at BMS is the legendary Junior Johnson, with 21 victories. Over the course of a week in 2010, Kyle Busch made history by winning three NASCAR national series races in a single race meeting: the Truck Series race on a Wednesday, then the Nationwide Series race, and the Spring Cup Series race.

Do not buy Allison-Terrance tickets. You cannot see the start finish line. The cars look like match box cars. When I purchased these tickets I paided $130.00 for then ,thought they were going to be great seats.Anything past row 10 you cannot see. Alway see the map of the track. Worse time at race track that I have been too.I live within15 minutes of Martinsville speedway. Please always get a map of all seats so you want be disappointed in your purchased as I am.

I bought these tickets for my husaband for Christmas! He's a mega Jeff Gordan fan! We sat directly across from his pit stop in Allison section row 12! A little loud for the kids but overall, great seats!

  • Bristol is a must do!

We had a great time in Bristol. The staff were all very helpful. Tickets are still to pricey compared to other tracks. The cheapest place to stay is in Knoxville, east area. Off of I-40. About 1 hr 40 min drive to the track. Be sure to take plenty of fluids with you as they allow small coolers. Water is $4 a bottle. Plan on a lot of walking. Seems like everything is up hill. Don't forget ear protection!

  • Great race

It had been thirty years since I had gone to Bristol all the changes I think has really improved conditions for the fans. The seats that I got were great and really enjoyed the race.

  • Jeff Byrd 500 incredible?

by nascarfred on 3/23/11Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 5 out of 5

The Jeff Byrd 500 at Bristol was the most incredible experience I've ever had at a race, and I have been going to NASCAR races for 33 years! My seat was in the 7th row in the front straight. I could see the entire track from my seat and exciting racing was happening all over the track. The sounds and smells at a live race are fantastic, but more so at Bristol! You don't know what you're missing by not coming to Bristol! I will definitely be attending next year!

This place has everything over Martinsville, it is truly a genuine copy of Talladega only 1/2 mile long! I don't think there is a bad seat in the whole house, and the sound.........WOW!, the sound is deafening! You would not be disappointed going to this race track if you love NASCAR!

  • Stay home race fans

by BeachRacer on 3/22/11Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 4 out of 5

Seats were great. View is great. Better than Daytona or Talladega. Racing is ok ... better than some tracks so we should still be thankful. Bathrooms were clean, really. No waiting for concessions (before race). Everything clean. Little traffic getting out because I know where to park and briskly get to the car afterward. Smallish crowd was great. We had plenty of elbow room. Stay away race fans. I like extra space. Poor attendance is Bristol's problem, not mine.

  • #18 Rocked Bristol Once again!!

    by nascargrl88 on 9/29/10Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 5 out of 5

This is the best track in the circuit by far. You can't duplicate the atmosphere of the town or of the people. If you have one track to visit, Bristol should be it!

  • Glad we went ... probably won't go again, though .

by PhenixCityCouple on 9/8/10Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 3 out of 5

We can say we went to the Bristol night race ... one of the things on our list of things to do. However, we probably won't go back. It was different, being a night race, close to the action, etc. That said, we prefer tracks like Talladega. At Bristol, our tickets were 2 and a half times more expensive for the Saturday night race than we pay for the two day tickets at Dega. Then Bristol parking was an additional $30 ... come on now! We also didn't like the fact that you can't even talk to the person next to you during the entire race. At least at Dega, you get the opportunity to interact with those around you and you don't feel like you're watching a race all by yourself with plugs in your ears. At one point, we got our cell phones out and typed text messages back and forth to comment on the race because we couldn't hear each other when we tried to talk. Also didn't like the short track ... It's too hard to tell who's where without looking at the tower and who wants to look at the tower all the time??? You might miss something on the track. Overall, we're glad we went, but it just isn't for us, so we won't be back. We enjoyed the rest of our trip sight-seeing around the Great Smoky Mountain area and even liked that so much that we went back 2 weeks later to see what we didn't have time to see on race weekend.
