About Bristol Motor Speedway

You can tell a lot about the character of Bristol Motor Speedway from the nicknames assigned to the venue by racing fans. There are four in wide circulation: "The Last Great Colosseum" and "The Bullring" for the track's shape; "The World's Fastest Half-Mile" for its speed (cars complete laps in about 15 seconds); and "Thunder Valley" for its noise. The track is steeply banked and ringed with stadium-style seating. With a capacity of 162,000, it is the third-largest sports venue in the United States and the seventh-largest in the world.

Bristol Motor Speedway History

Bristol Motor Speedway, located in the northeast corner of Tennessee, opened in 1961. It was built by Carl Moore, Larry Carrier, and R.G. Pope on the site of a former dairy farm. They drew their inspiration from a trip to Charlotte Motor Speedway, but the $600,000 Bristol track was a more intimate (and noisier) venue, and in 1969 the track was reconfigured with its signature steep banks. In 1992, BMS replaced its asphalt surface with a concrete surface that is now its other hallmark. It is something of a celebrity, having served as the basis for the fictional Motor Speedway of the South in the Disney/Pixar film Cars.

The speedway is home to races in the NASCAR Cup Series, the NASCAR Xfinity Series, NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series, ARCA Menards Series East, and the NHRA Mello Yellow Drag Racing Series. In the Cup Series, racing great Richard Petty holds the track record for most Top 10 finishes (with 37) and most starts (with 60). Darrell Waltrip leads with 12 all-time wins. The all-time winningest car owner at BMS is the legendary Junior Johnson, with 21 victories. Over the course of a week in 2010, Kyle Busch made history by winning three NASCAR national series races in a single race meeting: the Truck Series race on a Wednesday, then the Nationwide Series race, and the Spring Cup Series race.

  • Racin' The Way It Ought to Be?

    by Rayduck63 on 8/28/12Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 2 out of 5

I would much rather see Bristol racin' the way It USED to be! Drivers used to have to really work to make passing work at Bristol and teams really had to work to make the cars do what the drivers needed. Not so much so anymore. Bristol never had a high line. Drivers had to work really hard to get the nose of their cars under the other drivers rear bumper and force them to a higher line that wouldn't hold as well. They could only pass on a high line if their cars were dialed in properly. And that wasn't easy! There was little side by side racing. Bristol has lost a lot of its appeal! Mr. Smith broke the cardinal rule "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

  • Irwin Tools night race...good race, not seats

by willjacw on 8/28/12Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 3 out of 5

The race was great but the seats were not. I was in DW-H Row 33 and sat by/near a bunch of drunk people and a woman who continuously showed her chest to several men. The police even had to talk to them. I got beer spilled on me and smoke in my face. Additionally, I inquired about season tickets for 2013 and was sent to the Ticket office by a lady I was emailing...got there and told the tickets were not available but they would check. After waiting in the sun too long, I called the Bristol number and was told to go to the ticket office again and have them set up an account to be notified. I did this again and was told to go to the building up the hill because "their computers are better than ours." After walking back up the hill the lady there didn't know what to offer and only was able to verify my account. Nothing accomplished. I still want tickets for next season but what a hassle this has been so far.

  • Bristol Night Race

by WildTex on 8/28/12Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 4 out of 5

The Sprint Car NASCAR race in Bristol TN is a must see event for race fans. Race day is full of cool things to do and see. The race track is very loud so bring hearing protection. Coolers are allowed and are encouraged. The track has been rebuilt to allow the race to be more exciting. My seats were at the very top of the statium and were shaded. These shaded seats are recommended because it is very hot in the sun. I recommend this race to anyone and any age. I took a shudle from Johnson City hotel and thisis the only way to go. It took 30 minutes to get to the track and 1 hour to get back after the race. I do not recommend driving to the race.

  • Bristol night race, Aug 2012

by NHracefan on 8/28/12Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 5 out of 5

Bristol night race is something to be seen! It's awesome on TV and even better live. Traffic and parking are tuff. Free parking is always a plus (Like at NH Motor Speedway). Ticket booth 11 was slow and we waited for 'will call' tickets for 30 minutes and missed some of the pre-race show. I guess I should have picked the tiks up Friday night, but they need to get moving in that booth too. My seat in corner 4, row 57 had an 'I' beam that supports the suites above blocking some of my view. It had a TV monitor attached to it, which seemed to balance out the visual obstacle. The pre-race show was the best I've seen; great intros, fireworks, military, shout out to veterans, flags, kids singing our National Anthem, celebrities & jet fly-overs. The post race show was great; fireworks, ticker-tape & a smoke show by the 11 car, Denny Hamlin... Hoping I can get back to Bristol soooon to watch the 2 car win next time, haa.

Thiis is an amazing race track. The people are friendly and any seat is a good place to view the track. My only complaint is the food could be better for more options.

  • Unbelievable place for a race

    by JD442 on 8/27/12Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time to Bristol for a race. I have always enjoyed watching Bristol races on television and always wondered what it would be like in person. I had great seats on the front stretch in the Allison Terrace. I thought it would be tougher to keep track of the lead lap cars and it really was not. The view of the track is awesome. For those people that do not like to walk, Bristol is not the place to go since it seemed like everything was up and down hills, I paid for parking off of the track property. It was about a 20 minute walk to the track. After the race, I was on I-81 heading southbound in about 45 minutes after the race ended and that includes the time it took to walk back to my vehicle, The track has done a good job of working with the local authorities with the traffic flow.

First time there - you might consider sending a info sheet with tickets about parking and facts about the track - example the amount of walking up and up and then down and down

  • Bristol Is The Best! Must See!!

by crazyNCman on 8/27/12Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 5 out of 5

Bristol is the best track to see a Nascar race. We had a great time, the weather was perfect and it is just a great time! Our seats in Darrel Waltrip Section G, Row 60 is to high. You have polls for the suites above that get in your way. The seats are metal bleachers and not good. Sit in Turn 1 and 2 is better.

  • Danica Patrick rocked the track!!!

    by KMAJORS87 on 8/27/12Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 5 out of 5

I loved the track at Bristol, it was my first time to the track. I ordered my tickets online for the NW & Sprint race, I went to willcall and picked up my tickets Friday night and the lady also let me pick up the next race day tickets and my driver Q&A tickets, she made my experience with picking up tickets so quick and easy, she also answered all of my questions fully and gave me good directions of where to go. All of the event staff I encountered were all nice and friendly and every helpful. I enjoyed both races under the lights and I will highly reccomend this track to my friends and I will be back next year as a repeat offender!!!!!!
