About Bristol Motor Speedway
You can tell a lot about the character of Bristol Motor Speedway from the nicknames assigned to the venue by racing fans. There are four in wide circulation: "The Last Great Colosseum" and "The Bullring" for the track's shape; "The World's Fastest Half-Mile" for its speed (cars complete laps in about 15 seconds); and "Thunder Valley" for its noise. The track is steeply banked and ringed with stadium-style seating. With a capacity of 162,000, it is the third-largest sports venue in the United States and the seventh-largest in the world.
Bristol Motor Speedway History
Bristol Motor Speedway, located in the northeast corner of Tennessee, opened in 1961. It was built by Carl Moore, Larry Carrier, and R.G. Pope on the site of a former dairy farm. They drew their inspiration from a trip to Charlotte Motor Speedway, but the $600,000 Bristol track was a more intimate (and noisier) venue, and in 1969 the track was reconfigured with its signature steep banks. In 1992, BMS replaced its asphalt surface with a concrete surface that is now its other hallmark. It is something of a celebrity, having served as the basis for the fictional Motor Speedway of the South in the Disney/Pixar film Cars.
The speedway is home to races in the NASCAR Cup Series, the NASCAR Xfinity Series, NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series, ARCA Menards Series East, and the NHRA Mello Yellow Drag Racing Series. In the Cup Series, racing great Richard Petty holds the track record for most Top 10 finishes (with 37) and most starts (with 60). Darrell Waltrip leads with 12 all-time wins. The all-time winningest car owner at BMS is the legendary Junior Johnson, with 21 victories. Over the course of a week in 2010, Kyle Busch made history by winning three NASCAR national series races in a single race meeting: the Truck Series race on a Wednesday, then the Nationwide Series race, and the Spring Cup Series race.
We had an absolutely amazing time! It was my very first NASCAR race and my fiancé and I had a blast! We will definitely be returning next year!
I thought the handicap parking was about the worst I've experienced at a race track. When we first got there the State Police had us turn into where the handicap parking is. But the track security said the track didn't recognize the state handicap parking permit. Never heard of that ever. So, they made us turn around and drive about 1/2 mile away and be drove in on a golf cart. That's wright the put the two of us on the back of a golf cart and dropped us off by the front of the track. Also we had to stand there for about 30 mins both ways, waiting on a ride on this golf cart. IMAO Bristol needs better handicap parking, other than that it was great...
If you only go to 1 event. make it this race! It was excellent and the changes they made to the track were worth it!
Race was full of line to line action.seats were great.)
The race was up from previous races at Bristol. Just being at the night race and suroundings was awesome. Track was redone, now Bruton needs to work on better ticket pricing, hotel pricing and "coupon type" for helping with the high price of fuel.
Great RACE!!!!!!! The way racing ought to be!!!!!!
This race was an improvement over the spring race but the preferred groove is now the top side. I would like the track to be changed to make the bottom lane the preferred groove. Let me say that if you have never been to Bristol, you need to go; you will not be disappointed.
It was good racing has always at bristol....it was racing all the way been there for the past 10 year's.
Really enjoyed the race and prerace activities. A lot of things to do before the race even happens. Lots of "Freebies" from company's that sponsor Nascar
Second time going to this race and it was better than the first time.
Everything about the race was awesome! Our seats were not that great but the overall racing experience was great.
Amazing event - Never been to a Nascar event before and never considered myself a fan. But Bristol did a great job with the night race and all the pre/post festivities. Well worth the ticket in every way! A must attend event.
The whole event was very very well put together there is so much for all visitors to look at and the stadium was clean clean clean
Awesome Race! Very Loud. Very fun. Very good view. Highly Recommended
This is a great race. If you've never been you need to try it. If you have been before I know you'll be back.
...and it was great. Really liked the mountain scenery. I have been to 10+ different tracks and this is one of the best. Very clean and pleasant facilities and surroundings. Traffic leaving the event is managed well, much better than most tracks.
How true. One of the best ones to go to. This is a must see race.
With all the different stage, displays and musical talent there was more than enough to take in before the race began. Patrons were pleasant as were those who worked the various venues - not forgetting the staff of the race track and the local law enforcement. Access to everything was easy. There were shuttles running between the track and parking areas so there was plenty of pampering in my opinion. Loved it all!
Only 4 seats in our row. So close we were covered in rubber! Great visibility at this track!
Awesome race, highly recommended. Get there early.
