About Bristol Motor Speedway

You can tell a lot about the character of Bristol Motor Speedway from the nicknames assigned to the venue by racing fans. There are four in wide circulation: "The Last Great Colosseum" and "The Bullring" for the track's shape; "The World's Fastest Half-Mile" for its speed (cars complete laps in about 15 seconds); and "Thunder Valley" for its noise. The track is steeply banked and ringed with stadium-style seating. With a capacity of 162,000, it is the third-largest sports venue in the United States and the seventh-largest in the world.

Bristol Motor Speedway History

Bristol Motor Speedway, located in the northeast corner of Tennessee, opened in 1961. It was built by Carl Moore, Larry Carrier, and R.G. Pope on the site of a former dairy farm. They drew their inspiration from a trip to Charlotte Motor Speedway, but the $600,000 Bristol track was a more intimate (and noisier) venue, and in 1969 the track was reconfigured with its signature steep banks. In 1992, BMS replaced its asphalt surface with a concrete surface that is now its other hallmark. It is something of a celebrity, having served as the basis for the fictional Motor Speedway of the South in the Disney/Pixar film Cars.

The speedway is home to races in the NASCAR Cup Series, the NASCAR Xfinity Series, NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series, ARCA Menards Series East, and the NHRA Mello Yellow Drag Racing Series. In the Cup Series, racing great Richard Petty holds the track record for most Top 10 finishes (with 37) and most starts (with 60). Darrell Waltrip leads with 12 all-time wins. The all-time winningest car owner at BMS is the legendary Junior Johnson, with 21 victories. Over the course of a week in 2010, Kyle Busch made history by winning three NASCAR national series races in a single race meeting: the Truck Series race on a Wednesday, then the Nationwide Series race, and the Spring Cup Series race.

Seats were great. Weather cleared up and was sunny about 66 deg. The racing was good a lot of lead changes. A few wrecks. Only negative was Dale Jr. finishing 6th. But a really enjoyable experience.

  • Ford City 500 was the Greatest!

by Shorttrackfan on 3/19/13Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 5 out of 5

I am still reeling from the wonderful experience. Everything from the hotel to the handicapped parking, to the people, to the traffic, to the track, to the race itself, couldn't have been better. My seats in the low grandstand on the back track were perfect. If I ever have the money and opportunity to come again, I will try to get exact same seat. Short track racing is the best. The driver has to really drive. It is not an endurance race, like the longer tracks. This is the fourth track at which I have been lucky enough to attend a race and it was by far the best. The people were welcoming and friendly and made one feel welcome and important. The only downside are the fake caution that Nascar uses to change the outcomes of the race. I am an old less than mobile lady and was somewhat worried about coming by myself, but my worries evaporated and it was "the most fun thing" I have done in several years.

We got in the stands an hour before the race and thjey had already given away 5 Mustangs and already picked the other people that could win. I did not understand that. When we were scaned, going in, the lady said we still had a chance at the cars.

I have traveled to many sporting events around the country. Without doubt BMS Food City 500, all around, was the most enjoyable experience my wife and I have had at a sporting event. The facility was spacious, volunteers were gracious and the fans were friendly. Cudo's to BMS, their entire organization, NASCAR and especially to the drivers and their teams for an exciting race. We shall return soon.

To whom it may concern: I have attended Bristol many times in the spring and fall. Up until 4 years ago, I was there camping for 4 days at each. Got bored with the new track configuration and let my tickets go. I was glad to here about new track changes last year and wanted to see for myself. My wife and I bought tickets online 2 weeks before the race and had great seats. I really enjoyed the racing again. I am currently a season ticket holder at Talladega, which brings me to my complaint. Over the last several years, ticket prices at Talladega have dropped in hopes(I think) of keeping the stands full, and still trying to give the fans an exciting and inexpensive experience. If I remember correctly, the ticket prices at Bristol increased resulting in many seats being empty. I also visited to concession stand 1 time for nachos and was really surprised to pay 7 dollars for what probably cost less than 2 dollars to provide. They basket of nachos was only about half full. At Talladega, I may have to pay the same $7 for a decent snack, but at least the basket was full of nachos and cheese chili, and jalapeños. I say all this to say that I think you could do more to fill and keep filled your seats. Thanks for allowing me to give my opinion.

There was plenty of passing, even Denny Hamlin could not complain about the ability to pass other cars.

    by sjh57 on 3/19/13Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 3 out of 5

as usual, we got gouged at every turn by tickets, fees, handling charges, food, drinks, parking...greed prevails. we won't pay to go again unless Nascar and Ticketmaster lower their prices. stay home and watch on TV and save big bucks!

  • My First Bristol Race Was Awesome!!

by Skutfarkus on 3/19/13Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 5 out of 5

I've been to eight Brickyard 400's, half a dozen Joliet races and once to the Richmond Fall race. All of them great venues but this Bristol race was the best race I've ever attended. The facility was clean the track employees helpful and friendly. But is the racing in the end you come to see and for excitement and drama you could not beat it. There is no place on earth as loud as this half mile.
