About Bristol Motor Speedway

You can tell a lot about the character of Bristol Motor Speedway from the nicknames assigned to the venue by racing fans. There are four in wide circulation: "The Last Great Colosseum" and "The Bullring" for the track's shape; "The World's Fastest Half-Mile" for its speed (cars complete laps in about 15 seconds); and "Thunder Valley" for its noise. The track is steeply banked and ringed with stadium-style seating. With a capacity of 162,000, it is the third-largest sports venue in the United States and the seventh-largest in the world.

Bristol Motor Speedway History

Bristol Motor Speedway, located in the northeast corner of Tennessee, opened in 1961. It was built by Carl Moore, Larry Carrier, and R.G. Pope on the site of a former dairy farm. They drew their inspiration from a trip to Charlotte Motor Speedway, but the $600,000 Bristol track was a more intimate (and noisier) venue, and in 1969 the track was reconfigured with its signature steep banks. In 1992, BMS replaced its asphalt surface with a concrete surface that is now its other hallmark. It is something of a celebrity, having served as the basis for the fictional Motor Speedway of the South in the Disney/Pixar film Cars.

The speedway is home to races in the NASCAR Cup Series, the NASCAR Xfinity Series, NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series, ARCA Menards Series East, and the NHRA Mello Yellow Drag Racing Series. In the Cup Series, racing great Richard Petty holds the track record for most Top 10 finishes (with 37) and most starts (with 60). Darrell Waltrip leads with 12 all-time wins. The all-time winningest car owner at BMS is the legendary Junior Johnson, with 21 victories. Over the course of a week in 2010, Kyle Busch made history by winning three NASCAR national series races in a single race meeting: the Truck Series race on a Wednesday, then the Nationwide Series race, and the Spring Cup Series race.

  • Bristol Rally Cross was great!

by Anonymous on 7/23/13Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 4 out of 5

I had a blast. I have been a fan of Rally Cross for a long time but never seen it in person. I really hope they bring them back next year! The RC event was without a doubt the highlight of the show. It's something I believe the east TN area needs to see more of, and at Bristol. Getting fans excited about racing is what I'm all about. Especially when it's new forms of racing. Better shows at Bristol, makes people want to come back for more. My only complaint or gripe would have been for the monster trucks. There wasn't enough gravel/dirt areas for the trucks to be able to slide a lot. Running on mostly asphalt kept the cornering speeds way down, which made the overall speed for the trucks way down.

Had a great time! GRC is fun to watch (fan of WRC too). Wish the heats were more laps. Would have liked to have seen more dirt and water on course. Got to meet drivers and visit pits - very cool! Will definitely go again.

  • Monster Truck/ GRC racing is awesome!!!

The megasaurus event was a bit long and drawn out but all of the rest of the event was great. I was impressed by the fact that the drivers were signing autographs with all the fans and not just a chosen few. I was madly in love with the trucks... the bikers were awesome with the tricks they used as well. The GRC racing was everything I had hoped for. All in all, it was a good event.

Was a great time for all of us. Lines moved well, all seats in dome are good not a bad seat! Great event for any NASCAR Fans. Refreshments are expensive but they let you bring in your own so that was a plus. Very clean!

  • Most fun & patriotic event I've ever attended.

NASCAR keeping God, music, the flag, the military, the flyover, the pledge of allegiance, star spangled banner, charity and prayer in this sport is why I love it. And the racing and sponsors, and drivers just make it complete. Don't ever change.

The race was good. The weather was good. We were disappointed that we couldn't find where to register for the Bruton's Mustang giveaway.

  • Awesome race at Bristol

    by woofan99 on 3/19/13Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 5 out of 5

Been going to this race for several years now and always have an awesome time. Short tracks are cool because you are right there up close and there is not a bad seat in the place.

  • Just perfect

There are only good things to say about it. Parking was not a problem. There are many options for paid parking but you can also find places to park for free. Did not face heavy traffic to get to the track at all. And for leaving the track, after the cup race was over, we didn´t face too heavy traffic. Very well organized event, clean restrooms, plenty of gentle and nice staff, nice souvenirs and food. Everything was awesome. I bought my ticket on the net and was supposed to retrieve it by will-call, and just because there were problems printing my ticket, so they had to bring it from the main office (and that took aprox 10 min), the staff apologized thousands of times. Besides that, I had no problem at all. I drove all the way from Miami to the track and it was completely worth it! Really looking foward to going to Bristol again.

  • Great first time visit

My first visit and I plan to start a tradition with my girlfriend and come every spring. It was a fantastic race and overall one of my favorite Nascar experiences.
