SHOW WAS GREAT AS ALWAYS MY 20th year excellent line up ''SAD TO HEAR ABOUT NEIL AND PEGGY "" BUMMER
the bridge school benefit never fails to satisfy. i wish i lived in mt. view just so i could attend each year.
I almost never leave concerts early, but I underdressed completely for this benefit. The lawn seats were fine, but due to the long lines to get in, we were relegated to the shade the whole time. By the time Tom Jones' set ended, we were too cold to stay -- which was a bummer, because we missed all the headliners. I definitely can't cross this off my wish list of shows, so I'll have to plan to attend again (assuming Pegi and Neil don't jettison the thing as part of their breakup).
Neil has created a music institution with the Bridge School Concert. There is no other concert series where you can see the eclectic musical lineup that he has assembled year after year. What makes it especially memorable is the acoustic requirements of the performers. Seeing Sound Garden or Pearl Jam or Metallica do a fully acoustic set of songs that were never originally written for that format, and sometimes seeing Neil jump into the middle of the song to assist in the solo or vocals. Just phenomenal!
Surprise, surprise, Florence and the Machine, that girl can sing. Also, Tom Jones, the crowd loved him.
This show was everything and more than I expected. I had to drive from Santa Barbara and spend two nights in a hotel and I was sceptical that it would be worth the money and hassel. There were no fewer than 5 occasions when I thought this one song alone is worth all the time and money I spent. On top of that it's for a good cause so I will be back next year.
If I had know the artists were going to PLAY THE EXACT SAME SET LIST BOTH DAYS THEN I WOULD HAVE ONLY GONE 1 DAY! Pretty disappointing. From a technical standpoint there must be a reason for doing this, but why don't the musicians switch it up? I guess during soundcheck they must prepare for the same song, but if I had know I would have only gone the one night. Oh well. We parked at the movie theatre and walked to Shoreline, a pleasant walk. Was tempted to get on a Google bike...Got in line about an hour or so before they opened the gates and got a good spot on the lawn each day. The food really is crappy, they let you bring in all sorts of stuff- it was amazing. People had huge bags and backpacks, chairs with inserts. Astounding really. If I had my act together I would totally bring in food for the day. They didn't pat down at all, or open my water bottles like some people said they do. Must be for certain shows only. Ummm, what else...Oh, the 2nd night there were some chain smokers right by us that was disgusting. Don't mind the pot smoke, but cigarette smoke is so gross. The shows were fabulous, Pearl Jam rocked and Hunger Strike with Chris Cornell was an experience of a lifetime. I particularly enjoyed Band of Horses, Norah & Pussnboots, Florence & the Machine, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. Brian Wilson is too old and his band mates carried the show, it was kinda fun to hear some of the old Beach Boy songs. Tom Jones, eh. Glad I went, but wish I had only gone the 1 night.
The Music, Atmosphere, and People were quite awesome. Temple of the dog was nice to hear. Florence and the Machine, not my cup of tea, but has an awesome voice. A little too much time between acts. 30-45min seemed like a lot of time for acoustic sets. The Venue, could use some maintenance and updating. We were in parking lot C-11 and there were a number of Large Holes in the Parking area.(which was dirt). Which is no big deal during the day. but at 10pm in the complete dark, with one light in the entire parking area, large pot holes cost my wife a twisted ankle and skinned knee about 10' from the car. Also worth mentioning that perhaps the best place for 60 Portable Toilets isn't upwind of general admission. All the sinks in this rear area were empty therefore if you were lucky enough to get a Port-a-potty you couldn't was your hands. Go Hygiene!!!!!
Soundgarden - Yowza! Tom Jones - Very handsome! Rocking those STRONG PIPES. Florence and the Machine - Voice from Heaven and Beyond! Soundgarden and Pearl Jam together - Bliss!
Peggy and Neil have outdone themselves. All the artists seemed to be genuinely enjoying themselves. My favorite event of the year.
Second year that I've gone and loved it. Hope to make a tradition!
Great Florence was fabulous Nice night. Good crowd
What an awesome day! Loved seeing Pearl Jam and Neil Young. We had lawn seats ~ next time we will show up earlier to sit closer to the stage. (With GA seats) We didn't realize was so big. Overall we had great time.
This was my 16th consecutive Bridge School Benefit and it was one of the more memorable ones. There were no real slow spots and all of the artists were entertaining. It was particularly great to see the interaction of the artists with fellow artists as well as the Bridge kids. It makes the experience all the more meaningful. While I wish Soundgarden would have played more than 5 songs, overall it was tough to be disappointed with the show. Tom Jones was surprisingly great with his booming voice, Brian Wilson had the most fun set of the day, Florence + the Machine astounded with her vocals and Pearl Jam proved that they continue to be one of the best live bands around. Another fantastic Bridge and I look forward to next year!
Frustrating!!!!! Ticketmaster, Bridge School and Shoreline Ampitheatre had conflicting show times and NONE had the time gates open. Two places indicated the concert started at 5pm, one said 7 pm (I'd be especially pissed about that!!). We read ALL of the rules about what was allowed and not allowed, and since rain was forecast and we had flown in from out of town without lawn chairs, we went to REI and bought premium "low-back" chairs -- as the rules indicated -- for $70 each (x 4 = $280). Finally found a working phone number at 3:15 on show day that said the gates opened at 3pm, so we hustled over, only to be told at the gate that we couldn't take our chairs in because they had "feet." The woman doing the pat-down said, when we argued, that the rule had been in play all season. (I know we weren't the only ones from outside California that came to the event and would have no way of knowing that without having it posted.) We could "check" the chairs, but we'd done that with cheap umbrellas at a Bruce Springsteen concert last year, only to be told after the concert that they didn't have any checked umbrellas. Weren't going to try that again. What we all wondered was why the hell none of the 3 sites had been updated to reflect new rules? Updating info -- especially in Silicon Valley -- should be a no-brainer, even on whatever substance you prefer. The walk back to the car, which my lovely husband did, took at least 30 minutes. Once seated, we enjoyed the show, but our enthusiasm was dampened considerably. We'd been looking forward to going to this concert for years, finally could, will think twice about it next year.
This event was really fun and for a benefit the ticket prices were awesome. However, if you are attending just to see one or two bands you will be disappointed. Each band was only on stage for 30 minutes which meant there was a lot of down time between sets since the show went from 5pm-12:30am. Maybe because it was for children (read all the performers were sober) there seemed to lack a freedom or energy that's usually present at shows. It was all very orchestrated and planned. The quality of acts was fantastic! Even though I'm not a fan of Brian Wilson or Tom Jones they sounded great. Neil Young singing Heart of Gold sounded like he hadn't aged a day since it was recorded. Band of Horses and Puss and Boots were very dull and I have seen BoH before.
No words to describe Florence's voice! She is not of this world. It was also really cool to see Chris and Eddie together. They are 2 of my old favs!
Not a huge Eddie better fan, but peal jam was pretty wet, I thought that sound garden did a pretty food job, as well as Florence and the Machine were amazing
The Bridge School Benefit concerts always amaze. Things you'll never see anywhere else. The entire line up was stellar with one exception. The most amazing was "Hunger Strike". Never ever thought I would see and hear that sound "Live". Once again Neil Young puts together talent that just blows you away. Personally, I would go just to see Neil. Great show!
Best performer was Florence and the Machine; least best performer was Brian Wilson, but his voice appears to be deteriorating. Good performance by Neil, but very sad to see friction from pending marriage breakup-What's with Neil and Peggy?; it seems like some folks are far from acting responsibly-Bad News about Neil and Peggy; if it's Neil's fault, he will lose a ton of respect. Hope the show continues, regardless of some very stupid decisions. Been to many Bridge Concerts, this is very sad concert due to a failed marriage.
