Won tickets to this show from 107.7 The Bone. I was most interested in seeing Pearl Jam, as I would have caught their 2013 Oracle Arena concert, except that the ticket prices were insane and it was virtually sold out in a day. I was also looking forward to Neil Young, as I had heard he was an excellent performer.
First up was Pegi Young & The Survivors. They played 5 songs. Reminded me of Janis Joplin a bit, though I'm not sure why. Surprised Neil let her play, as I had literally, just the day before, read they were getting a divorce.
Next was a group called Band Of Horses. They sounded like a Country-fied version of Counting Crows. They played 5 songs, including a JJ Cale cover, which was especially for Neil Young, who is apparently a big JJ Cale fan. These guys had good energy. I think they've got potential.
After that, Puss N Boots, a supergroup, featuring Norah Jones and two other girls took the stage. They were good, the audience loved them - they did 3 encores! I must say though, their thinly veiled, innuendo-filled songs were so terribly inappropriate for the event that it was hilarious, at least to me.
Soundgarden followed Norah and company. Their performance was interesting, as they were the first group to use an acoustic/electric guitar that was actually plugged in. They played 5 songs, throwing in a couple b-sides along with the 3 hits they played. I think Chris Cornell had allergies - he sounded kind of odd when he spoke between songs.
Next was Tom Jones. I honestly can't think of a way to describe just how awesome he was. All I can say is, if you ever get a chance to see him, do, whether you're familiar with his music or not.
Brian Wilson, well, he was strange. He sang fine and everyone in his band, including the other Beach Boy, who was a special guest, sounded fine. It was the way he was moving, almost would make me think he had been replaced by a not-too-advanced robot clone.
Florence + The Machine were up after Brian. Thankfully, they gave a good performance. Their singer, Florence Welch, is extremely attractive and sounds sort of like Grace Slick, the frontwoman of Jefferson Airplane/Starship. Her behavior between songs was adorable.
Pearl Jam came on afterwards. Eddie Vedder was doing an amusing sort of false Southern act - think Bret Michaels, but slightly more unreal. It was very distinguishing, to his credit and it suited their performance quite nicely. Eddie knows most of the kids at the Bridge School and even played "Sirens" by request of one of them. Also, Temple Of The Dog reunion!
Last, but certainly not least, Neil Young. He was just as good as I was expecting, even though he played maybe two songs I knew. Florence Welch, Pegi Young and other performers from earlier in the day joined him throughout his set. The only downside is near the middle of his last song, some guy in the audience started yelling obscenities, but the security took care of it.
