This was an extraordinary concert. I feel like having been to one of those famous concerts from the 60s, 70s, etc where you talk about 'when those guys got together on the same stage' for years to come. Sound was great, venue was great, etc... but the performers were what made it amazing.

Rating: 5 out of 5by Anonymous on 5/6/13Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles Rating: 5 out of 5 A magical night!
by OldDreamer on 5/6/13Royce Hall - UCLA - Los AngelesI really enjoyed the jazz on the terrace as an introduction to the magical performances on May 4th, 2013. As a jazz student, I've definitely learned to listen well and know that is fundamental in growing musically. I am just so grateful to have been able to attend the concert. They were all so wonderful and such an inspiration!
Rating: 5 out of 5 Epic!
by TPJazz on 5/6/13Royce Hall - UCLA - Los AngelesBrad Mehldau plays the piano like a Greek God of Music and the Bad Plus seemed to have made a breakthrough in jazz and created history. The complexity, layers, arrangements, melodies - it like being in a complete state of being in that moment! The Mehldau Trio went first for about an hour and a half. Mehldau played an incredibly beautiful Cha-cha version of McCartney's "And I love her." Mehldau's basist and drummer were exemplary musicians as well. Then came the Bad Plus with saxophonist Joshua Redman. It seemed like Redman just belonged there. I seriously have no words to explain the emotions of the music. It was so fresh, so different and complex, so beautiful. The last arrangement was interesting because it seemed to be in a very narrow range of notes and yet had so many variations and long sustained notes that were just magical. Read the LA Times review of this epic concert!

by Anchan357 on 5/6/13Royce Hall - UCLA - Los AngelesThe venue was beautiful. The music was great. The audience felt a little uptight. Lucky these groups played on the west coast.

by RDPESQ on 5/6/13Royce Hall - UCLA - Los AngelesNow I remember what great music is like. Artist who take chances, stretch boundaries and create songs that are experiences. Thanks guys for bringing me back. By the way Bad Plus and Joshua Redman, please do a live recording.

Rating: 5 out of 5 He was fantastic!
by Nerny on 1/30/12Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - WashingtonI really enjoyed my night! The synagogue was almost the perfect place because it made his music almost mystical.
Rating: 5 out of 5by Anonymous on 1/30/12Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - Washington The venue took place in a rather intimate setting with Brad on stage playing solo on a steinway which I believe was brought in that night just for the event. He started off his set with "things behind the sun" which I've heard him play countless times on various recordings, but nothing compares to the intensity that comes across actually hearing it in person. After that he played a few other covers, Hey Joe by Hendrix, Harvest by Neil Young, and Think of One by Monk. All were well over ten minutes long and compared to recordings I've heard of him elsewhere, he was on point the whole time. The whole show was an absolute delight and if anyone has a chance to see him in person, its an unforgettable experience.

Rating: 5 out of 5 Pure amazing
by BenWorldTravler on 4/10/11The Basement - SydneyI first hear Mehldau on a recommendation from my professional piano playing older brother (based in Hartford CT). The first album he passed along was Mehldau's "Art of the Trio Vol. 4". I was blown away by his rendition of Radiohead's "Exit music for a film". I started digging into more of his music with "Live in Tokyo". From start to finish this man blew my mind. yes it's more appreciated by the more adjusted ear but the Mehldau is pure genius. After listening extensively to "Tokyo" and "Largo" I began searching for a live performace of this incredibly gift pianist. I found myself in Sydney Australia a couple months later stumbling down a side street in the Rocks. Almost arriving late to my 58 dollar standing room ticketed date with perfection (or something close to it). After 2 hours of listening in awe to his trio perform i was left with a high that carried over for a good solid week. In short, if you have a chance to hear this gentleman play with or without his trio. Do it.
Rating: 3 out of 5 If you like 16th notes...
by ajsherman on 1/20/10Jazz Alley - SeattleIf you like 16th notes, and I mean A LOT of them, then you should check this out. I was disappointed to not have heard a radiohead song but that was understandable. While Mehldau is truly creative and interesting to listen to, after about and hour my brain had heard too many notes for one night.
