Boston Celtics History

The Celtics are one of the most successful franchises in NBA history. They are tied with the Lakers for the most NBA Championships at 17, and hold 10 conference titles and 33 division titles. They’ve retired 25 jersey numbers — the most of any franchise in the league.

The franchise was founded in 1946 and won their first championship in the 1956–57 season, which was the start of the most dominant run by any team in NBA history. Powered by Bill Russell and coached by Red Auerbach, both of whom are now Hall of Famers, the Celtics won 11 NBA Championships in a 13-year span.

Russell won the NBA MVP Award five times in that stretch, and teammate Bob Cousy also was named league MVP once. Of their first 11 championships, seven came against the Lakers. It began a cross-country rivalry that is still one of the league’s fiercest today.

The Celtics won two more titles in the '70s and finished the decade by securing Larry Bird in the 1979 NBA Draft. That began another dominant stretch in which the Celtics went to the finals five times in seven years and won three more titles. The Celtics did not return to the finals until the 2007–08 season, when they were led by the "Big Three" of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. They once again beat the Lakers to win their 17th championship.

The Celtics most recently advanced to the NBA Finals in 2022, but eventually lost in a competitive series to the Golden State Warriors. The team was led by current stars Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.

Boston Celtics at TD Garden

TD Garden opened in 1995 and replaced the original Boston Garden, which housed the Celtics for 49 years. In the nearly 30 years it has hosted the Celtics, TD Garden has been renovated three times: in 2006, 2009 and 2014. The latest renovations added a new HD entertainment board, a see-through shot clock and an LED lighting system to the exterior of the building.

TD Garden also houses The Sports Museum, which features memorabilia from various sports teams and events in the area, including the Boston Celtics, Boston Bruins, Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. It also features sculptures of some of the most legendary athletes in Boston's history, including Larry Bird.

    Best Seats

by Irm on 4/21/22TD Garden - Boston

Going to a Celtics game is all about the experience and wow, the vibe is incredible. I have pretty much sat in almost every area of the TD Garden for a game and Club seats have to be the best in house. You have view of the full court and your chances of getting on the jumbo trim are greater—and you don’t have to try!! I love being here and cannot wait to go again!! I love you Boston Celtics!

    Uncomfortable

by Mark on 3/9/22TD Garden - Boston

The seats in the Boston Garden are ridiculously small and would be great for someone with no legs. I will never purchase tickets for another event at this venue.

Love the Celtics Hate the TD Garden

by Allgas on 2/14/22TD Garden - Boston

Today let's talk about parking. I have a disabled son that attends all games with me. Each game starts with me trying to explain to the attendants that I need handicap parking and them telling me there are none and me pointing out empty handicap spots and them telling me I cannot use it. This happens every game. I attend about 30 games a year combined Celtics/Bruins. Very frustrating.

    Excellent

    by J. C. on 1/20/22TD Garden - Boston

Thank you for having a vaccine and mask mandate. Please keep those policies in place until this whole thing is behind us. Thank you. We attended the game on MLK Day. Great job to the Celts organization for honoring Dr. King at the beginning, and all throughout the game. Jaylen Brown's address to the crowd about systemic racism before the game was on point. Also, big thanks to all the staff who helped out my son who was in crutches. We didn't search out any help or accommodations. There were just Garden staff who identified us, recognized that we might need some support, and helped us out. They get us through the security check quicker and helped us find an elevator up to our seats. Thanks for caring. Awesome job all around to the TD Garden/The Celtics.

    Amazingly Great Time!

by Sheila W on 1/18/22TD Garden - Boston

TD Garden staff are always very friendly and helpful. Seats and all areas were very clean. And it always helps that the game was a barn burner right up to the last shot...and a Celtics win!!!

    AMAZING. No words!

by Alessia Lion Maugerj on 1/3/22TD Garden - Boston

It was the first time ever for me and my boyfriend at TD Garden and generally attending an NBA match live. It was truly an amazing experience! 🤩 Americans support their teams in a very polite and effective way, we definitely didn't hear a single offense or "bad" word against the opponents. I'd consider the game not only as a mere match but as a real SHOW. Being encouraged to make noise, shout "de - fence " or effectively clap your hands was part of making this experience more unique. BB Playing in USA is really different from Italian or Europe once, not only for "the show" and building's capacity, but also for "the game" and Rules. it's more fluid and easy to follow, making this experience UNIQUE in your life! Especially because it was New Year's Eve and the Celtics won! We brought Luck to the team. 🍀 🥳

Fun time at the TD Garden!

    by G. M. on 12/27/21TD Garden - Boston

Lucky to get tickets at the last minute after the Bruins game for the next night was postponed. We flew in from out of state to surprise... nearly ruined due to COVID... This game was a fun and memorable experience, C's won thankfully!

    People were not wearing masks

by Madeline on 12/23/21TD Garden - Boston

Mask rules not at all enforced despite Boston’s surge and news of Omicron. We did not feel safe and left at halftime.
