Boston Celtics History

The Celtics are one of the most successful franchises in NBA history. They are tied with the Lakers for the most NBA Championships at 17, and hold 10 conference titles and 33 division titles. They’ve retired 25 jersey numbers — the most of any franchise in the league.

The franchise was founded in 1946 and won their first championship in the 1956–57 season, which was the start of the most dominant run by any team in NBA history. Powered by Bill Russell and coached by Red Auerbach, both of whom are now Hall of Famers, the Celtics won 11 NBA Championships in a 13-year span.

Russell won the NBA MVP Award five times in that stretch, and teammate Bob Cousy also was named league MVP once. Of their first 11 championships, seven came against the Lakers. It began a cross-country rivalry that is still one of the league’s fiercest today.

The Celtics won two more titles in the '70s and finished the decade by securing Larry Bird in the 1979 NBA Draft. That began another dominant stretch in which the Celtics went to the finals five times in seven years and won three more titles. The Celtics did not return to the finals until the 2007–08 season, when they were led by the "Big Three" of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. They once again beat the Lakers to win their 17th championship.

The Celtics most recently advanced to the NBA Finals in 2022, but eventually lost in a competitive series to the Golden State Warriors. The team was led by current stars Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.

Boston Celtics at TD Garden

TD Garden opened in 1995 and replaced the original Boston Garden, which housed the Celtics for 49 years. In the nearly 30 years it has hosted the Celtics, TD Garden has been renovated three times: in 2006, 2009 and 2014. The latest renovations added a new HD entertainment board, a see-through shot clock and an LED lighting system to the exterior of the building.

TD Garden also houses The Sports Museum, which features memorabilia from various sports teams and events in the area, including the Boston Celtics, Boston Bruins, Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. It also features sculptures of some of the most legendary athletes in Boston's history, including Larry Bird.

    Great Experience

by CelticsWatcher on 10/12/09TD Garden - Boston

This was both my first trip to Boston and my first trip to the Garden. With assistance from the staff at the Garden we were directed to the proper door to enter and were treated nothing but the up most. professional. If we made any error at all, we ate at the McDonalds in the station area underneath and should have waited till actual entry. I would reccommend this experience to anyone it was a great day, even though it was just a pre-season game.

    Hope for another great season

    by Birthday53 on 10/12/09TD Garden - Boston

The game on 10-11-09 showed the Celtics will be back with a team that could bring another NBA championship to Boston. The starting 5 are great and the players coming off the bench will also provide exactly what the Celtics will need in any situation.

    CELTICS WON!!

    by 11BarrosFan on 10/12/09TD Garden - Boston

It's always amazing going to a Celtics game. Good to have KG back and healthy. Ray and Paul looked great as usual. Love Eddie House and his 3 point shots. Scal is great, he'll get his spotlight one day I know it. Rando looking good along with Big Baby. Still think we should have got rid of Perkins. Rasheed and Marquis fell into place nicely. Looking forward to the next game.

by CandyA on 10/12/09TD Garden - Boston

It was great to be at the Garden again to see the Celtics! The atmosphere was happy and full of anticipation for the new season! Watching Sweetney and Wallace getting some of their first "shots" in at the Garden rocked! Let the season begin!

I was a good game. No used to pre games but was good. A couple issues I had was with the seats. He pricing for a preseason game I would have hough would have been a little cheaper than what i paid. But also, the seats that I was sitting in had gum all over it and had to be scrapped and the back of the chair as well. For any game i go to I would expect the seats to be cleaned be for i get there because there was no where for m group to sit. And lastly the seats were small. The seats are made fore very thin people and for people who are larger its hard to sit in. The person sitting next to me was spilling over into my area because hey were larger and the seat was small which affected me.

Great atmosphere, but game didn't live up to hype.

by SwineFluGame7 on 7/14/09TD Banknorth Garden - Boston

The story couldn't be better. Game 7 of the NBA Playoffs for the second time for the Celtics. The problem this time was that injury and fatigue may have taken too big a toll on the Gang Green. The place was rocking from the start, but a lackluster first half kept the crowd out of it for most of the game. The crowd tried at several points to cheer the team back, but it wasn't in the stars for the C's as they lost to finish off their season.

    Playing 'til the end!

by CandyA on 7/14/09TD Banknorth Garden - Boston

The afternoon streets of Boston was full of fans donning their Celtics gear and you feel the excitement emanate off the streets. Once in the Garden, the air was electric and the rally towels were waving. While the Celtics may not have been playing their best game ever, the fans still rocked their support and cheered for every basket. There are no better fans that Boston fans! I was thrilled to be there for every moment of this historic game. And, the true fans, stayed until the last buzzer-you never leave your team in their last game!
