About

Bluesy singer/songwriter Bonnie Raitt has worked long and hard for her multiple Grammy Awards, hit singles and chart-topping records. Since her 1971 eponymous debut, the California-born performer and long-time activist has steadily maintained a music career, albeit with definite peaks and valleys. The red-headed songstress, one of the only women of her time to play guitar using the bottleneck technique, unleashed seven albums in just nine years, though her big commercial break came with her 10th studio set, 1989’s “Nick of Time.” That 11-track collection, produced by Don Was, earned three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.

Not only has the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer tackled multiple U.S. tours and international runs, but she’s also a frequent participant in events of social activism, such as Farm Aid and Amnesty International concerts.

Raitt’s 16th full-length album and most recent studio release, “Slipstream,” hit retailers in 2012. Not only did ticket sales for the support tour soar, but Raitt also landed the best-selling blues album of the year and took home the Grammy for Best Americana Album.

Bonnie & Taj Rocked the Stars

by trbryrap on 8/19/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre Peter Conlon Presents - Atlanta

Everything was perfect - Bonnie and Taj groove in perfect rhythm. They lit up the night, individually and together. Bonnie is the essential Blues Woman to the very soul. Her slide guitar brought tears to my eyes. And her Angel from Montgomery stole the night air right from the sky. The only reason they don't get 5 stars is due to the length of the show - ended way too early. Probably due to the venue (Chastain has noise ordinances) - and who could help but want more of perfection!

    roll on blues!

by capeNana on 8/18/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - Hyannis

a tour not to be missed, this concert from the hearts of two soulful giants was more than we expected. the bands, especially the horns from Phantom could not be stopped. Bonnie's vocals put her recorded versions to shame, she's absolutely electric. We wanted to dance with Taj all night long. We've been Taj fans for thirty years or more and this is the showcase he and his band deserve. Go Go Go!!!

Bonnie and Taj - Share the Love

by Yankl on 8/17/09Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park Bandshell - New York

This show was wonderful to be at. Being on the lawn, it was kind of far away, and there was a lot of distraction during Taj's set, including us eating our picnic dinner, but he seemed good. Bonnie was also good, but the two together was the best. First Taj came and sat in with Bonnie for two songs, then the last half hour was the two, with both bands, together. Now that's what I call the blues!

Bonnie Raitt/Taj Mahal: Celebrate Brooklyn 8/12/09

by RHGirl57 on 8/17/09Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park Bandshell - New York

Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulet! Last night rtb, violeeblue, and I saw a night of blues, R&B, and blues-based rock with The Bontaj Roulet, which was one of the Celebrate Brooklyn concerts at the Prospect Park bandshell. The stage had a big sign with the name of the show and a huge B and T on either side all New Orleans Mardi Gras style and you just knew the B and T stood for Bon Temps as well as Bonnie and Taj. Taj Mahal performed first with the Phantom Blues Band, which is Mike Finnigan on keys, Johnny Lee Schell on guitar, Joe Sublett on saxophone and Darrell Leonard on trumpet (otherwise known as the Texacali Horns, Tony Braunagel on drums, and Larry Fulcher on bass. If you’ve never heard Taj (and I can’t believe you haven’t) he plays blues mixed in with jazz and world music and he’s been doing it for a long time – long before it became popular. But when Taj sings the blues he’s not unhappy or depressed – he may be tired and you may not love him but he is not going to moan or wail about it. For two songs his daughter Diva Mahal joined in. The first was a love song and like all love songs sung as a father/daughter duet it made me uncomfortable. The band is tight and Taj is a big man with a big gentle sound. When Bonnie Raitt entered I was standing off to the side of the stage waiting on line for food so I got a great view of her. She’s a small woman with a gorgeous mane of red hair and the light was shining on her and it was a perfect moment. Her guitar sings as sweetly as she does but there’s an underlying gruffness that lends itself well to blues and R&B. She has taken all the lessons she’s learned from the old blues artists and she can stand proudly next to them whether singing the blues or singing rock and roll. She did a lot of the favorites, most of which she played with and changed the melodies. I really like what she did with “Angel From Montgomery” and “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” The latter was done quietly as the first encore song. When she sang the lines for the second chorus her voice went out loud and it came from deep dark hurt in the pit of her stomach and I threw my head back and yelped in pure joy at the beauty of that moment as the chills went up and down my arm. In fact there were several moments when I got chills that night. For the rest of the encore Taj and the Phantom Blues Band joined Bonnie and her band, Hutch Hutchinson on guitar, Ricky Fataar on drums (who you may also know as Stig O’Hara of the Rutles), George Marinelli on guitar, and Ricky Peterson on keys (who did a beautiful jazzy end solo on “I Can’t Make You Love Me”). Bonnie and Taj traded off vocals with various band members joining it. They did a calypso number where the horns sounded more island Latino Caribbean then island Black Caribbean and the keys played a very fun steel drum part. Bonnie talked about wanting to do a tour with Taj for many years and how happy she was that it was finally happening. And, as always, some of the proceeds from the tour would be going to various charities. We had been sitting on the lawn for Taj’s set but very early in Bonnie’s set I was up and dancing and never sat back down. You watch certain artists and you know why they’ve been around forever and why people love them so – Taj and Bonnie are two of those artists. The night was fun with some absolutely incredible moments of pure joy.

    Bonnie&Taj the perfect pair

by BonnieFanMom on 8/17/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - Hyannis

The Melody Tent is a terrific venue because everyone gets a great view of the performers, most of the time. Whoever was at the controls for rotating the stage could've done a better job at times turning the stage 360 degrees instead of 180. The sound was perfect, and you could hear a pin drop because the audience was mesmerized by both Taj and Bonnie. Bonnie is an incredible performer, making the audience feel like close personal friends over for a jam session in her living room. You get the feeling that she never forgets anyone she's met, or anyone who helped her on the way up during her long music career. Her voice gets richer with the years, and her outstanding guitar playing impressed even my rock 'n roll husband.

Separately they are amazing, together they're incredible. And even the "lawn" seats were well worth it.

by ddunn0608 on 8/16/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - Hyannis

Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal were simply amazing! Each song was better than the next. I went with 6 great friends, we didnt sit down all night. It was my first time to the Melody tent, we were lucky enough to position ourselves where the artists came in so we felt really up close and personal. Bonnie and TAj rocked the house! I'd follow them anywhere!

Can't Wait for the Concert CD

by BigFanBoston on 8/16/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - Hyannis

Taj opened and his sound was a little off (bass was distorting), but that was soon resolved. Could have passed on "Senor Blues" (horace Silver), but then he clicked with some of his old hits and Diddy Wah Diddy by Bo Diddley. Bonnie came on and blew the roof off. As Bonnie said, both of them have a huge catalogue of hits to choose from. The sound quality of Bonnie's set was excellent. Bonnie used Taj's horn section, and Taj joined her for several great duets. Finally both bands squeezed up on stage together for several songs. I left fully satisfied with song selections, alot of favorites, and quality of performance, and concert length. Catch this concert if you can!!

Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal had everyone dancing

by Maggie6 on 8/16/09Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park Bandshell - New York

Both Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal were awesome on their own, but the two together had the audience up and dancing. Nothing better than listening to two musicians who clearly love what they do. And Bonnie is the coolest - loved her banter between songs.

    Why so long?

by letcall on 8/15/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - Hyannis

The Bon Taj concert was certainly the one to see this summer. Sure, go see the Boss or U2 in the big stadiums but where can you get up close and personal, so much so you could see Bonnie and Taj wiggle their behinds quite nicely, thank you! Due to increased security, the lines to get in were back as far as the Melody Tent parking entrance so I missed the entrance of Taj Mahal. Once seated, you couldn't help but get caught up in his larger than life, and i do mean life, personality. He delicately mixed Grammy winning songs with down in the Delta blues that had even the Queen Bee buzzing. Bonnie took to the tilt a whirl (rotating stage) a bit tepidly at first but quickly went with the flow to remind us that the band ironed their shirts because we could see them front, center, and back. Her band eased through decades of material from Good Man, Good Woman,, Something to Talk About, Angel From Montgomery, and Have a Heart. She called Taj up several times to sparkle and shimmy on the stage. When both bands jammed (no, literally, shoulder to shoulder) the stage, the audience came to their feet and were not disappointed with the groove masters at their best.. The most touching moment came when Boonie sang I Can't Make You Love Me. Albeit for some inopportune cheers and whoops from the crowd, she fell into the song, wiping away a lone tear at the end. So Bon Taj, why did you make us wait so long to lift us up and carry us away with your artistry?

    Taj & Bonnie & Bonnie & Taj

by Aileron on 8/15/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - Hyannis

The artists individually were amazing and together they were an incredible team. The musicians were excellent. And the playlist could have been doubled and still not have satisfied! It was awesome. I was disappointed in the sound, which was not well mixed or balanced, at least to my ear. I have been to other concerts at the Tent, though not this year, and the sound was better.

    Bonnie Raitt

by RockytheBear on 8/15/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - Hyannis

Taj opened up right on time, and kept it hopping for an hour, then Bonny joined him after a short intermission, the next 2 hours were great, some duets, but mostly Bonny, she had great spunk, and can still belt out a tune, some people sound better in person than on tape, she is definately one......

    Bon Taj Roulet was perfect!

by StanLukas on 8/15/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - Hyannis

Outstanding! It was an extreme pleasure to experience musical genius. I have been listening to Taj Mahal for over forty-six years, and to Bonnie Raitt for perhaps thirty or so. They gave me what I expected - - perfection, and the back up bands for both were also wonderful. This was a most enjoyable evening.
