After his show at the Wilbur was cancelled, and this show itself was postponed, I'm glad I finally got to see Bobcat in Boston. Johnny D's is a small club/restaurant in Somerville, and those of us in attendance that night got to see one hell of a show.
Bobcat did a hilarious mix of material from his most recent special, "You Don't Look The Same Either", and some brand new material I hadn't heard before. A lot of it was personally anecdotal. He knows that there are always people who only seem to remember him from the Police Academy movies and other work before the 1990s, despite the fact that he's done a lore more than that (at least 3 stand-up albums, "Shakes the Clown", the brilliant "God Bless America", directing Jimmy Kimmel Live, etc.), but makes fun of that fact in his act.
At some point during the show, he spots a woman trying to video record him on her smart phone. He asks, "You're filming me? Why don't you just remember the show with your BRAIN camera? That stuff [that you just filmed] is readily available on many formats. You can *rip* that joke. Just enjoy the show ... It's just annoying, it's just really weird. When I see this I don't think 'Wow, there's somebody who's really into my shit!' I think 'There's someone that hopes that I fucking pull a Michael Richards'. Because that's the whole goal, isn't it? To get more hits and more likes than anyone else. What is a 'like'?"
The opener, local comedian Alingon Mitra, was a little mainstream for my tastes but still had a great 20 minute opening set that the audience enjoyed.
