About Bobby Rush in Concert

Bluesman Bobby Rush embodies the idea that you’re only as old as you feel. When he became more popular than ever in his eighties, he was consistently bringing his fans a live show - one as full of vitality as any you’d see from a performer a quarter his age. Rush doesn’t just stand there and sing, he really pulls out the stops for his ever-growing audience. When he’s not throwing emotion into his singing and harmonica playing, he’s cavorting with his female dancers, telling riveting stories and engaging in a give-and-take with the crowd that makes everybody in the room feel part of the evening’s event. With his crack band serving up Rush’s signature blend of funky grooves, soulful tunes and timeless blues, a Bobby Rush show isn’t just a concert, it’s an experience.

Bobby Rush Background

If Bobby Rush’s life were a movie, nobody would believe it was a true story. Born in Louisiana in 1933, he ended up in Arkansas, where he befriended blues icon Elmore James and played with legendary pianist Pinetop Perkins. When he made his way to Chicago during that city’s blues heyday, he was palling around with historic figures like Jimmy Reed and Muddy Waters. The wider world got a taste of Rush’s signature blend of soul, funk and blues (eventually dubbed “soul blues” by the media) with his 1971 hit “Chicken Heads,” which would have a second life decades later in the film Black Snake Moan. Rush’s first album was produced and cowritten by Philly soul godhead Leon Huff. Long after becoming a hero of the soul blues circuit, Rush relocated to Mississippi, and he eventually tapped into the Delta blues tradition with his 2020 album Rawer Than Raw. But before that, he won his first-ever Grammy at age 83 for his funky, retro-soul album Porcupine Meat, proving his appeal is truly timeless.

  • Bobby Rush was the best!

by caterae on 1/20/15Sam's Town Casino - RobinsonvilleRating: 4 out of 5

Sir Charles, didnt sing enough songs. He spent a lot of time talking and using cursing words that I think was not needed to get the show on the road. Sir Charles needs to clean up his act. His fans dont come to see him perform as thou he is in the streets. Money was spent for a good performs but we didnt get it.

  • No respect for time!!

    by Sunshyne2266 on 1/20/15Sam's Town Casino - RobinsonvilleRating: 2 out of 5

The concert started late. Bobby Rush wouldn't leave the stage (despite being given the light). We really wanted to see Sir Charles; however, his time was cut very short because of the late start and Mr. Rush. I understand Mr. Rush is a blues legend but time should be respected. The concerts have to be over by a certain time, so therefore, being timely is vital. Ms. Ruby Wilson was stellar. I loved her rendition of "At Last". She stayed mindful of her time, and left when it was up. Intermissions were 10 minutes max. Sir Charles was great in the short time he had! I recommend this because I love the blues.

Bobby Rush has still got it!!!!! Even tho he is in his 80s he really knows how to turn a crowd up. I saw Sir Charles and he is always the best... I saw one of my choice members playing in the band for Sir Charles and he was AWESOME!!!

  • Bobby Rush Was Great

by WILLINGSON on 1/19/11Sam's Town Casino - RobinsonvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Bobby Rush was great and I loved his show. Sir Charles left a little to desire. I didn't like any of his songs and he was less than desireable.

  • Bobby Rush and Sir Charles was dynamic a must see

by dlacy on 1/19/11Sam's Town Casino - RobinsonvilleRating: 4 out of 5

The entire show was absolutely awesome. The performers both had plenty of time to perform. The interlude music was on point. I look forward to see more shows like this. The more performers on program does not make a good show. The show is made when you only have a few who can really show their live performance skills.

  • Had A Blast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    by Jazzy82 on 1/18/11Sam's Town Casino - RobinsonvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Booby Rush was great with his interactions with the audience, he go the crowd up and out of there seats. He even said Happy Birthday to a young lady that was 88 years old that has been listen tohim since he was out. And has well he give my aunt a hand shake and a huge for her birthday, which was really cool of him. Sir Charles was okay, for him to let his brother sing with him, because it was his brother birthday weekend has well. But, Bobby Rush was my very favorite, with the dancers that made the men go wild!!!!! Thanks for the great time.

  • man, both artist were drunk!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    by sexyinthecity28 on 1/17/11Sam's Town Casino - RobinsonvilleRating: 3 out of 5

It was hillarious. They barely sung their song for the fact they were talking to much and dancing wildly. I have seen them before but this time it was not very entertaining!!!!!

  • Many touching moments

by Mississippired on 1/17/11Sam's Town Casino - RobinsonvilleRating: 4 out of 5

The wife and I really enjoyed the show. Both entertainers were outstanding. Although the show started a few minutes late, it was well worth the wait. Bobby opened the show and in true form performed great. Bobby reflected and shared what I believed was an important period of his life as a performer and as a Black Man growing up in the South. Bobby's performance and sharing highlighted the eve of MLK Day. At 77 Bobby was full of energy and he gave the wife and me our money's worth. Way to go Bobby, I will come again. Sir Charles followed Bobby and he too held his own and in true form lived up to his reputation of being a crowd moving artist. I will attend his next show that is in this area as well. The show's host Thaddeus was incredible. Mississippi Red

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Ladytray on 1/17/11Sam's Town Casino - RobinsonvilleRating: 4 out of 5

I've seen Bobby Rush numerous times but this show was wonderful. Bobby changed his act a little bit and it worked. You would never know his age from his performance. Keep up the good work. Love it and will attend the next time he is around the Memphis, Jackson & Mississippi area. Sir Charles did a wonderful job as well. I love his voice. I wished he would have sung a couple more songs. A lot of people were complaining about that. He put on a awesome show as well. The picture we took with him turned out beautiful. Loved the show.

  • Blues Artists Unforgettable

by survival1 on 8/25/10Desoto County Civic Center - SouthavenRating: 5 out of 5

All of the blues artists were terrific. The first male, Crawford, was not ready for an annual blues show. He probably need to start at a club or something smaller. But far as the rest of the performers, they were awesome. I go every year and looking forward to next year already. The first female performer was good. She coming on up. You all can bring her back next year also. We did miss Stan Ealy, I believe thats his name, that sings "Stand Up In It". You all did good. the comedian was good as usual. Keep up the good work! They needed more time on the stage. They were rushed off because of time.

  • The Blues Is Alright With Me

by ChancesR on 8/24/10Desoto County Civic Center - SouthavenRating: 5 out of 5

The entire performance was excellent as always. I love to see what the performers are wearing when I go to a Blue Concert because they are always razor sharp! I will always come to see the BluesFest. Please make sure that you bring Willie Clayton and Lenny Williams to add to the acts the next time if at all possible.

  • What I didnt like about the concert.

by JackieandWade on 8/23/10Desoto County Civic Center - SouthavenRating: 3 out of 5

I think that the show was great for this being my first concert since moving to Memphis from California. I think that the singers did not sing enough songs for the money that was paid for the show. They all are great singers but they should've sang more songs. And for a Saturday night too, they should have held the concert a little longer. But thats just my opinion because in Los Angeles we party at the concerts and most of the time they are always sold out.
