About Bobby Rush in Concert
Bluesman Bobby Rush embodies the idea that you’re only as old as you feel. When he became more popular than ever in his eighties, he was consistently bringing his fans a live show - one as full of vitality as any you’d see from a performer a quarter his age. Rush doesn’t just stand there and sing, he really pulls out the stops for his ever-growing audience. When he’s not throwing emotion into his singing and harmonica playing, he’s cavorting with his female dancers, telling riveting stories and engaging in a give-and-take with the crowd that makes everybody in the room feel part of the evening’s event. With his crack band serving up Rush’s signature blend of funky grooves, soulful tunes and timeless blues, a Bobby Rush show isn’t just a concert, it’s an experience.
Bobby Rush Background
If Bobby Rush’s life were a movie, nobody would believe it was a true story. Born in Louisiana in 1933, he ended up in Arkansas, where he befriended blues icon Elmore James and played with legendary pianist Pinetop Perkins. When he made his way to Chicago during that city’s blues heyday, he was palling around with historic figures like Jimmy Reed and Muddy Waters. The wider world got a taste of Rush’s signature blend of soul, funk and blues (eventually dubbed “soul blues” by the media) with his 1971 hit “Chicken Heads,” which would have a second life decades later in the film Black Snake Moan. Rush’s first album was produced and cowritten by Philly soul godhead Leon Huff. Long after becoming a hero of the soul blues circuit, Rush relocated to Mississippi, and he eventually tapped into the Delta blues tradition with his 2020 album Rawer Than Raw. But before that, he won his first-ever Grammy at age 83 for his funky, retro-soul album Porcupine Meat, proving his appeal is truly timeless.

Bobby was amazing. I didn’t know what to expect…he was so entertaining. He can sing, tell stories & jokes and make you feel like it was a show just for you.
It was our first time seeing Bobby Rush as well as our first time at Jimmy's Jazz and Blues Club! The performance was awesome! I would highly recommend seeing Bobby Rush if he comes around again! Bobby put on a great show and was available after the show and signed books and CD's! The venue was amazing! Our waiter was great and the food was delicious. The space was clean and inviting and the updates that they have done to the historic building are beautiful. One thing that I would say is that on ticketmaster when purchasing tickets it doesn't show you that there is a wall between the stage and the sky bar, you cannot see the stage at all you are in a closed off separate room, this was very disappointing, there are 2 TV's in that room for you to watch the show. We were able to talk with the manager who was amazing and actually got us seats in the main room! The venue went above and beyond for us and it was appreciated! I would highly recommend Jimmy's!
We wer in POD #12, excellent seating. My fellow podders were 2 of my best friend, 2 sisters and my 76 year old mother. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. The temperature was just right for July. The space between each Pod was adequate for this COVID season.
The show was on time all of the featured artist did a great job.
AWESOME! It brought back a LOT of MEMORIES on my 70th Birthday. I love Bobby Rush! Thanks to my GOD Daughter Freddie for coming back into my life and being here for me now.......and ...forever!
The show was amazing...great show...great venue...can't wait for the Blues Bash to return next year...we will definitely be there...thanks for bringing the show to Kalamazoo!
Great evening of blues!!! From the heartfelt opening with Wayne Baker Brooks and Shawn Holt to the rhythm of Joe Louis Walker and onto the amazing harmonica with Bobby Rush, this was not a concert to miss!!
Great show on a snowy night. The performers gave an entertaining and masterful show!
My sister and I had a great time celebrating our birthday...Had great seats
Bobby Rush is still going strong at 81. What a great show. Always good seeing him at the annual Peace and Freedom concert. Drive all the way from Indiana every year.
Sam Town Tunica always puts on real good show i will go every year
Ruby Wilson's voice is awesome. Wish she would have sung a few more songs. Bobby Rush was awesome as always. If you ever see him, you know his show but it is still always entertaining. Now for Sir Charles! Welllllll! He really need to have a set ready, he just make it up as he go and we would really like to see more of him. I would not pay just to see him. Just really need to do better. Has a great voice but need to now how to entertain and stop cursing and playing on stage. IJS
Sir Charles, didnt sing enough songs. He spent a lot of time talking and using cursing words that I think was not needed to get the show on the road. Sir Charles needs to clean up his act. His fans dont come to see him perform as thou he is in the streets. Money was spent for a good performs but we didnt get it.
The concert started late. Bobby Rush wouldn't leave the stage (despite being given the light). We really wanted to see Sir Charles; however, his time was cut very short because of the late start and Mr. Rush. I understand Mr. Rush is a blues legend but time should be respected. The concerts have to be over by a certain time, so therefore, being timely is vital. Ms. Ruby Wilson was stellar. I loved her rendition of "At Last". She stayed mindful of her time, and left when it was up. Intermissions were 10 minutes max. Sir Charles was great in the short time he had! I recommend this because I love the blues.
Bobby Rush has still got it!!!!! Even tho he is in his 80s he really knows how to turn a crowd up. I saw Sir Charles and he is always the best... I saw one of my choice members playing in the band for Sir Charles and he was AWESOME!!!
I went, I saw, and I really enjoyed the show. We need to have more shows like this.
Bobby Rush and Sir Charles was just fantastic. I love listening to the Blues, getting to see some of your favorite performers just puts icing on the cake. Can't wait for the next show jazzy e
Bobby Rush was great and I loved his show. Sir Charles left a little to desire. I didn't like any of his songs and he was less than desireable.
The entire show was absolutely awesome. The performers both had plenty of time to perform. The interlude music was on point. I look forward to see more shows like this. The more performers on program does not make a good show. The show is made when you only have a few who can really show their live performance skills.
